He wrote magazine stories and poems, a few novels for adults, and 100 plus boys' books. His boys' books were hugely popular. Alger was born in Massachusetts, and attended Harvard College. He became a Unitarian minister, but his career as a clergyman was brief. It ended when his congregation charged him with child molestation. Criminal charges were not placed against him, but his career in the church was finished. He moved to New York City to become a professional writer. In 1868, Alger found his place in the literary world with his fourth boys' book, Ragged Dick.

It sometimes happens that a boy who passes for good-hearted changes into a selfish man; but Tom required no change to become that. His heart was a very small one, and beat only for himself...

Book excerpt: CAUSES: In this upcoming FLU (Faith Lacking Urgency) season we live in a day and age where we are bombarded with so many new diseases, cancerous doctor reports, unemployment, mind battles, failing marriages, racism, children going astray, and the stress of living above the 'barely making it' level. There is a war going on for your attention, mind, body and soul; however we must rise to the URGENCY of faith. Our blood (which represents everything about us) is being attacked and tainted with the infections and viruses of unbelief, worry, strong spiritual warfare, a compromising Christian walk, prayer-less lifestyle, and distractions from today's social media. Family, this is NOT God's plan for our life. TIME TO SEE THE DOCTOR: It is my strong belief and confidence in God that He has led you to this 30 day journey to be infused with the Blood of Christ. God is writing out your daily Rx which is divinely prescribed to assist you in your current trials and tribulations. These ministerial writings will give you the encouragement to fight the good fight of faith. It's time to clothe yourself with the whole armor of God which will build the spirit's immunity to fight off every fiery dart that's aimed your way. The immune system protects against disease in the same way the immune spirit protects against the attacks of Satan and life itself. Allow this devotional series to assist in building up your immune spirit which should also accompany the word of God, prayer, obedience, fasting, praise, and worship. With all of these medications the Doctor assures you that your faith will NOT fail; you shall win EVERY war and walk out your destiny from VICTORY! Book excerpt: While Dan was strong, sturdy, and the picture of health, his mother was evidently an invalid. Shewas pale, thin, and of delicate appearance. She was sitting in a cane-seated rocking-chair, which Danhad bought second-hand on one of his flush days at a small place on the Bowery. She looked upwith a glad smile when Dan entered."I am so glad to see you, my dear boy," she said."Have you been lonely, mother?" asked Dan, kissing her affectionately."Yes, Dan, it is lonely sitting here hour after hour without you, but I have my work to think of.""I wish you didn't have to work, mother," said Dan. "You are not strong enough. I ought to earnenough to support us both.""Don't trouble yourself about that, my dear boy. I should feel more lonely if I had nothing to do.""But you work all the time. I don't like to have you do that."In truth the mother was very tired, and her feeble fingers were cramped with the stitch, stitch, stitchin endless repetition, but she put on a cheerful countenance."Well, Dan, I'll stop now that you are at home. You want some supper.""Let me get it, mother.""No, Dan, it will be a relief to me to stir around a little, as I have been sitting so long.""Oh, I nearly forgot, mother-here's a nice pear I bought for you.""It does look nice," said Mrs. Mordaunt. "I don't feel hungry, but I can eat that. But where is yours, Dan?""Oh, I've eaten mine," answered Dan, hastily. It was not true, but God will forgive such falsehoods."You'd better eat half of this.""No; I'll be--flummuxed if I do," said Dan, pausing a little for an unobjectionable word.Mrs. Mordaunt set the little table for two. On it she spread a neat cloth, and laid the plain supper-aplate of bread, ditto of butter, and a few slices of cold meat. Soon the tea was steeped, and motherand son sat down for the evening meal
