Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1883, wearing a sixty-pound suit sewn from leather boot-tops, a wanderer known only as the Leather Man began to walk a 365 mile loop between the Connecticut and Hudson Rivers that he would complete every 34 days, for almost six years. His circuit took him through at least 41 towns in southwestern Connecticut and southeastern New York, sleeping in caves, accepting food from townspeople, and speaking only in grunts and gestures along the way. What remains of the mysterious Leather Man today are the news clippings and photographs taken by the first-hand witnesses of this captivating individual. The Old Leather Man gathers the best of the early newspaper accounts of the Leather Man, and includes maps of his route, historic photographs of his shelters, the houses he was known to stop at along his way, and of the Leather Man himself. This history tracks the footsteps of the Leather Man and unravels the myths surrounding the man who made Connecticut’s caves his home. Ebook Edition Note: Six of the 111 illustrations have been redacted.

Book excerpt: Wrestling is as much a part of winter in Iowa as is snow and cold. Dreams of state championships begin in elementary school and, since 1972, come to fruition-or heartbreakingly fall short-at an arena in Des Moines in February or March. The tournament finals sell out, and individuals and teams carve their names on the sport's history tree each year. Some champions were deaf, some were amputees, but all earn the respect of thousands for their work ethic-a hallmark of the state's populace. Is this heaven? No, it's better than that. It's high school wrestling in Iowa!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Xwelíqwiya is the life story of Rena Point Bolton, a Stó:lō matriarch, artist, and craftswoman. Proceeding by way of conversational vignettes, the beginning chapters recount Point Bolton's early years on the banks of the Fraser River during the Depression. While at the time the Stó:lō, or Xwélmexw, as they call themselves today, kept secret their ways of life to avoid persecution by the Canadian government, Point Bolton’s mother and grandmother schooled her in the skills needed for living from what the land provides, as well as in the craftwork and songs of her people, passing on a duty to keep these practices alive. Point Bolton was taken to a residential school for the next several years and would go on to marry and raise ten children, but her childhood training ultimately set the stage for her roles as a teacher and activist. Recognizing the urgent need to forge a sense of cultural continuity among the younger members of her community, Point Bolton visited many communities and worked with federal, provincial, and First Nations politicians to help break the intercultural silence by reviving knowledge of and interest in Aboriginal art. She did so with the deft and heartfelt use of both her voice and her hands. Over the course of many years, Daly collaborated with Point Bolton to pen her story. At once a memoir, an oral history, and an “insider” ethnography directed and presented by the subject herself, the result attests both to Daly’s relationship with the family and to Point Bolton’s desire to inspire others to use traditional knowledge and experience to build their own distinctive, successful, and creative lives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gladigator is the childrens champion of Rome. He and his family were given the gift of having their ages frozen in time by the gods of the ancient druids. His ancient rival is the dreaded Tyrannous and his Gladiators, who made a pact with the devil that allowed them to fight in all the great wars in history for two millennium. However, during this two thousand year pact, Tyrannous did not bargain on the Gladigator being around to confront him at every turn. The Gladigator first defeated Tyrannous in the Circus Maximus, to win his freedom. However, the emperor deceived the children of Rome by ordering his men to capture Gladigator. Gladigator knew he had to get out of the Roman empire and heads for Caledonia, Scotland. He knows that the Roman empire stops a Hadrians Wall and that he would be safe in Caledonia. The story focuses on Gladigators incredible journey from Rome all the way to Auchinlea in Glasgow, where he eventually settled down. Follow his many adventures along the way, culminating in the fantastic showdown with Tyrannous and his men in Auchinlea Park, where they reproduce the ancient Circus Maximus of Rome in the heart of Auchinlea Park, whilst the whole of the 21st century world holds its breath for the outcome of this final conflict between good and evil. The book is also highly educational, with much historical research, ranging from the ancient fighting styles and weapons of Rome, to the many ways of life of ancient cultures, such as the Gauls, the druids, and the Caledonians. The book is also crammed full of Glasgows history, including the Bishoploch, Provan Hall house, and Blairtumock House, just to name a few. It is also based on the real-life Gladiator programme of Glasgow and the real-life Gladigator mascots. This is a fantastic swash- buckling childrens adventure that allows fiction to fuse with real history, teaching history in an informative and exciting way for children. Whether you are an adult or a child, there is much to learn and tremendous fun for all. Once you start reading this captivating, non-stop action adventure, you will not be able to put it down.
