That was until Scott Diamond happened. Damien’s father turned into a full-fledged drunk and had leveraged their business until they were close to filling bankruptcy. There was only one way to save it, and that was for Damien to go groveling to Henry Miller, his childhood best friend turned enemy. Only Damien got more than he bargained for, changing his life forever. No one knew that Henry’s business was failing. His father, who was dying of prostate cancer, had forbid him to tell anyone. Henry wasn’t sure what he was going to do to stay afloat, until Damien Diamond knocked on his door. They had been inseparable since childhood, but Henry had ruined that three summers ago. Now his uncle was there, causing trouble on the Miller Ranch. Not only was Damien a bear shifter, but now Henry was pregnant with his child and in deeper trouble than he could ever imagine. Lynn Hagen is a Siren-exclusive author.

As a peace-loving vegetarian, Damian is ready to move to Canada—until he finds a better way: doctoral degree in art history. He learns the importance of image. After all, who would suspect a PhD student of being a global drug smuggler and money launderer? Damian’s business plan focuses a new combination of opium and hashish that his fellow students brand O/H. They work together and trust each other. They don’t sell on the streets, instead targeting other students, doctors, lawyers—people the cops would never expect to be using. They make millions, and no one suspects a thing. They are not gangsters; they use brains instead of brawn, as modeled by their leader, Damian Garcia. They are honest drug smugglers, investing their vast profits in helping the poor and those in need. Book Synopsis What Is Contemporary Art? by : Terry Smith
Download or read book What Is Contemporary Art? written by Terry Smith and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2012-08-10 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who gets to say what counts as contemporary art? Artists, critics, curators, gallerists, auctioneers, collectors, or the public? Revealing how all of these groups have shaped today’s multifaceted definition, Terry Smith brilliantly shows that an historical approach offers the best answer to the question: What is Contemporary Art? Smith argues that the most recognizable kind is characterized by a return to mainstream modernism in the work of such artists as Richard Serra and Gerhard Richter, as well as the retro-sensationalism of figures like Damien Hirst and Takashi Murakami. At the same time, Smith reveals, postcolonial artists are engaged in a different kind of practice: one that builds on local concerns and tackles questions of identity, history, and globalization. A younger generation embodies yet a third approach to contemporaneity by investigating time, place, mediation, and ethics through small-scale, closely connective art making. Inviting readers into these diverse yet overlapping art worlds, Smith offers a behind-the-scenes introduction to the institutions, the personalities, the biennials, and of course the works that together are defining the contemporary. The resulting map of where art is now illuminates not only where it has been but also where it is going.

Book Synopsis Memento Mori in Contemporary Art by : Taylor Worley
Download or read book Memento Mori in Contemporary Art written by Taylor Worley and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-11-28 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores how four contemporary artists—Francis Bacon, Joseph Beuys, Robert Gober, and Damien Hirst—pursue the question of death through their fraught appropriations of Christian imagery. Each artist is shown to not only pose provocative theological questions, but also to question the abilities of theological speech to adequately address current attitudes to death. When set within a broader theological context around the thought of death, Bacon’s works invite fresh readings of the New Testament’s narration of the betrayal of Christ, and Beuys’ works can be appreciated for the ways they evoke Resurrection to envision possible futures for Germany in the aftermath of war. Gober’s immaculate sculptures and installations serve to create alternative religious environments, and these places are both evocative of his Roman Catholic upbringing and virtually haunted by the ghosts of his excommunication from that past. Lastly and perhaps most problematically, Hirst has built his brand as an artist from making jokes about death. By opening fresh arenas of dialogue and meaning-making in our society and culture today, the rich humanity of these artworks promises both renewed depths of meaning regarding our exit from this world as well as how we might live well within it for the time that we have. As such, it will be a vital resource for all scholars in Theology, the Visual Arts, Material Religion and Religious Studies.

Download or read book The Diamond Smugglers written by Ian Fleming and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2024-08-06 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE TRUE STORY OF AN INTERNATIONAL CRIME RING AND ITS DOWNFALL In 1957, as the Cold War raged, Ian Fleming took a respite from writing James Bond to craft a work of nonfiction every bit as tense as a Bond adventure. Aided by an ex-MI5 agent and International Diamond Security Organization operative going by the alias “John Blaize,” Fleming chronicled the IDSO’s infiltration of the “million-carat network”―the world’s most notorious diamond smuggling ring. Every year, a shadowy band of racketeers pirated a fortune in diamonds out of Africa, and the majority of the stolen gems wound up in the hands of Communist nations. In response, the IDSO commissioned a private army, led by legendary British spymaster Sir Percy Sillitoe, to penetrate and topple the ring. When the operation was complete, the Sunday Times gave the story to Fleming, who had impressed Sillitoe with his earlier Bond adventure Diamonds Are Forever. A remarkable feat of investigative journalism, The Diamond Smugglers is the thrilling true story behind one of the greatest spy operations in history.
