As the gateway to the Civil War, Whitfield County hosted bloody battles and sacrificed many of its own. It is home to an array of spirits that, for reasons of their own, refuse to leave. The laughter of ghost children still echoes through the halls of the historic Wink Theatre. From the weeping girl of the former Hotel Dalton to long-dead marching ghost soldiers and beyond, Dalton abounds in paranormal activity. Join author Connie Hall-Scott on a journey through a host of spectral things that go bump in the night.
Book Synopsis Global Mom by : Melissa Dalton-Bradford
Download or read book Global Mom written by Melissa Dalton-Bradford and published by Workman Publishing. This book was released on 2013-07-16 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One mother’s touching memoir of the adventures and hardships she faced while raising a family internationally for over 20 years. After more than twenty years living abroad—sixteen addresses, eight countries, and five different languages—writer Melissa Bradford shares a fantastic journey of motherhood that will inspire any family. Follow this family of six on their passage—extraordinary, hilarious and heartbreakingly poignant—from Bright Lights (of New York City) to the Northern Lights (of Norway) to the City of Light (Paris) to the speed-of-light of the Autobahn (in Munich). Continue deep into the tropics of Southeast Asia (Singapore) and end your voyage in the heights of the Swiss Alps (Geneva). As varied as the topography—the craggy fjords, the meandering Seine, the black forests, the muggy tropics, the soaring Alps—this international tale traverses everything from giving birth in a château in Versailles to living on an island in a fjord. From singing jazz on national Norwegian T.V. to judging an Indonesian beauty contest. From navigating the labyrinth of French bureaucracy and the traffic patterns of Singapore to sitting around a big pine table where the whole family learns languages, cultures, and cuisines—where they learn to love this complex world and, most importantly, each other. Praise for Global Mom “A stunning picture of life.” —The Deseret News “Here is a rich, frank and funny book in which the essentials of family and friendship and community are combined with interesting travelogue and the best kind of spiritual writing. In short, this is a book about love.” —Kate Braestrup, New York Times–bestselling author of Here If You Need Me “A brilliant hero's journey highlighting the challenges and triumphs of motherhood under unique cross-cultural circumstances. With honesty, sensitivity, and humor, Dalton-Bradford is a role model for all parents who will be relocating with children, especially those who will relocate for their spouse’s career.” —Paula Caligiuri, PhD, author of Cultural Agility: Building a Pipeline of Successful Global Professionals
Download or read book Dalton Trumbo written by Larry Ceplair and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2015-01-13 with total page 717 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James Dalton Trumbo (1905–1976) is widely recognized for his work as a screenwriter, playwright, and author, but he is also remembered as one of the Hollywood Ten who opposed the House Un-American Activities Committee. Refusing to answer questions about his prior involvement with the Communist Party, Trumbo sacrificed a successful career in Hollywood to stand up for his rights and defend political freedom. In Dalton Trumbo, authors Larry Ceplair and Christopher Trumbo present their extensive research on the famed writer, detailing his work, his membership in the Communist Party, his long campaign against censorship during the domestic cold war, his ten-month prison sentence for contempt of Congress, and his thirteen-year struggle to break the blacklist. The blacklist ended for Trumbo in 1960, when he received screen credits for Exodus and Spartacus. Just before his death, he received a long-delayed Academy Award for The Brave One, and in 1993, he was posthumously given an Academy Award for Roman Holiday (1953). This comprehensive biography provides insights into the many notable people with whom Trumbo worked, including Stanley Kubrick, Otto Preminger, and Kirk Douglas, and offers a fascinating look at the life of one of Hollywood's most prominent screenwriters and his battle against persecution.

Voices from the Nueva Frontera explores this phenomenon, providing an in-depth picture of Latino immigration and dispersal in rural America along with a framework for understanding the economic integration of the South with Latin America. Download or read book Southern Tufts written by Ashley Callahan and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2015-12-01 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Southern Tufts is the first book to highlight the garments produced by northwestern Georgia’s tufted textile industry. Though best known now for its production of carpet, in the early twentieth century the region was revered for its handtufted candlewick bedspreads, products that grew out of the Southern Appalachian Craft Revival and appealed to the vogue for Colonial Revival–style household goods. Soon after the bedspreads became popular, enterprising women began creating hand-tufted garments, including candlewick kimonos in the 1920s and candlewick dresses in the early 1930s. By the late 1930s, large companies offered machine-produced chenille beach capes, jackets, and robes. In the 1940s and 1950s, chenille robes became an American fashion staple. At the end of the century, interest in chenille fashion revived, fueled by nostalgia and an interest in recycling vintage materials. Chenille bedspreads, bathrobes, and accessories hung for sale both in roadside souvenir shops, especially along the Dixie Highway, and in department stores all over the nation. Callahan tells the story of chenille fashion and its connections to stylistic trends, automobile tourism, industrial developments, and U.S. history. The well-researched and heavily illustrated text presents a broad history of tufted textiles, as well as sections highlighting individual craftspeople and manufacturers involved with the production of chenille fashion.
