Book Synopsis Croatia: Dalmatian Coast by : Jane Foster
Download or read book Croatia: Dalmatian Coast written by Jane Foster and published by Bradt Travel Guides. This book was released on 2024-10-04 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New from Bradt is Croatia: Dalmatian Coast, a travel guidebook that focuses exclusively and in detail on this popular part of Croatia. Co-authored by travel writer Piers Letcher, who wrote six editions of Bradt’s guide Croatia, and longstanding Dalmatian resident Jane Foster, Croatia: Dalmatian Coast offers intimate local insights into where best to stay and eat, and what to see and do in this gorgeous southeast European enclave. With rugged limestone mountains, crystalline turquoise waters and pine-scented islands, Dalmatia has for centuries delighted explorers – and this is where most of today’s visitors to Croatia still head. With its balmy Mediterranean climate, this is a land of silvery-green olive groves, hillside vineyards, pebble coves, waterside villages, stone cottages, wooden fishing boats and pink-flowering oleander. Meanwhile, the Dalmatian mainland is home to the well-preserved port cities of Split, Zadar and Dubrovnik (with its UNESCO-listed, pedestrians-only old town), where sturdy fortifications protect exquisite Romanesque and Baroque churches, and bustling fish markets display mounds of wide-eyed sea bream and glistening octopus. With this Bradt guide sharing a local’s first-hand experience, you'll be sure to eat well: think fresh fish, local seasonal fruit and vegetables, and home-produced olive oil, whether consumed in excellent, family-run agrotourism eateries or newly Michelin-starred restaurants. You’ll drink great wines too, informed by the author’s knowledge of Dalmatian wines and wine-tasting. For many visitors, Dalmatia’s greatest allure involves exploring its dramatic landscapes and unspoilt nature. Castaway-style islands such as Hvar, with its rustic-chic seafood eateries and candle-lit cocktail bars, are much loved by yachters who sail around the uninhabited islets of Kornati National Park. Then there's windsurfing off Bol on Brac, scuba diving off Vis, and sea-kayaking or paddling around the Korcula archipelago too. On the mainland, rugged mountains and gaping gorges offer yet more challenges for adventure-sports enthusiasts – try hiking the soaring limestone heights of Mt Biokovo, free-climbing in Paklenica National Park or rafting down the Cetina Gorge, in the hinterland behind Omiš. Little wonder that land- and water-based adventure sports are treated to a full chapter in Bradt’s Croatia: Dalmatian Coast – the perfect companion to your visit.

Book Synopsis Networking in Late Medieval Central Europe by : Beata Możejko
Download or read book Networking in Late Medieval Central Europe written by Beata Możejko and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-02-10 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Exploring the formation of networks across late medieval Central Europe, this book examines the complex interaction of merchants, students, artists, and diplomats in a web of connections that linked the region. These individuals were friends in business ventures, occasionally families, and not infrequently foes. No single activity linked them, but rather their interconnectivity through matrices based in diverse modalities was key. Partnerships were not always friendship networks, art was sometimes passed between enemies, and families created for financial gain. Taking an interdisciplinary approach, the chapters focus on inclusion and exclusion within intercultural networks, both interpersonal and artistic, using a wide spectrum of source materials and methodological approaches. The concept of friends is considered broadly, not only as connections of mutual affection but also simply through business relationships. Families are considered in terms of how they helped or hindered local integration for foreigners and the matrimonial strategies they pursued. Networks were also deeply impacted by rivalry and hostility.

Book Synopsis At Europe's Borders: Medieval Towns in the Romanian Principalities by : Laurentiu Radvan
Download or read book At Europe's Borders: Medieval Towns in the Romanian Principalities written by Laurentiu Radvan and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2010-01-28 with total page 648 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This ambitious work focuses on the emergence and the development of medieval towns in the two Romanian principalities of South-Eastern Europe, Wallachia and Moldavia, from their earliest days, in the 13th century, up to the 16th. It is the only work of its kind in English, but at the same time the first in the field seeking to identify and substantiate common elements between towns in this area of Europe. It also covers Poland, Hungary and the lands south of the Danube. By relying both on various written sources, and on archeological finds, the author addresses several controversial issues, starting from the particulars of urbanization, through an analysis of local institutions, of urban society and economy, and concluding with thorough case studies. The result is a book which shows that medieval towns in the Romanian Principalities, despite being on the outskirts of Europe, were nevertheless part of it.
Book Synopsis Rebels Against Rome by : Stephen Dando-Collins
Download or read book Rebels Against Rome written by Stephen Dando-Collins and published by Turner Publishing Company. This book was released on 2023-01-31 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: #1 NEW RELEASE ON AMAZON The Great Roman Empire was no stranger to rebellions, but who were the rebels behind these lost causes, and what fueled their brazen plights? Despite their many differences, the rebels of the Roman Empire had one thing in common: all were Romans, or onetime Roman allies, who attempted to overthrow Roman rule within the bounds of the Roman Empire. Many of these rebels succeeded in humbling Rome, for a time. But in the end, Rome always prevailed, occasionally through the ineptitude of the rebels, but more often through the skills of Roman generals who rose to the occasion after others had failed. Rome’s greatest rebels took on many forms—including royalty, enslaved people, foreigners serving in the Roman army, over-ambitious Roman governors, a handful of genuine freedom fighters—but all had the courage and audacity to oppose the greatest empire the world had known to that time. These are their stories . . .
Book Synopsis Dalmatia between Ottoman and Venetian Rule by : Tea Mayhew
Download or read book Dalmatia between Ottoman and Venetian Rule written by Tea Mayhew and published by Viella Libreria Editrice. This book was released on 2013-11-27T00:00:00+01:00 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gives an overview of the crucial events that took place during the passage from the Ottoman to the Venetian rules in the Dalmatian hinterland during the Candian and Morean Wars in the second half of the 17th century. The hinterland of the capital city of the Venetian dual province of Dalmatia and Albania – the city of Zadar/Zara – has been used here as a case study to depict all the changes relating to: inhabitation, the appearance of settlements, changes in the populations and migrations, the forms and models of administrative and political institutions, specific border economies and the development of Venetian border areas through trade with the Ottomans alongside agriculture in the contado. Studied here is how the city of Zadar, whose life was organised as a typical coastal community like many in the Venetian Republic along with its contado, managed to enlarge its territory and incorporate elements of Ottoman political, administrative and cultural heritage along with thousands of Ottoman Christian subjects.
