Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a collection of research articles presented at different seminars/conferences. Some references therefore appear more than once as they claim contextual relevance. Hence they are retained. Some of the papers have been published in some journals and in edited books and the modified version is included in this volume. I thank the editors for permitting me to include them in this collection. Dalit has become a burning issue from the beginning of the 20th century, as its existence was mainly invisible so far. Its invisibility is due to the society’s refusal to admit it as social evil and moreover giving credibility for its divine origin. Thanks to the advancement of science and technology that made the people of the world to come closer. Philosophers introduced the ideas of liberty and equality that reached all the corners of the world. People have realized that freedom is above everything; Hence, they have decided to fight to break their chains of slavery/untouchability. The fight for their independence, individuality, identity, self-respect, economic independence is the story of Dalits, registered in this volume. It will not be fascinating or interesting but it helps the readers and researchers to understand the problem and become one with it, in the process of finding some reasonable and possible answers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contributors to this major intervention into Indian historiography trace the strategies through which Dalits have been marginalized as well as the ways Dalit intellectuals and leaders have shaped emancipatory politics in modern India. Moving beyond the anticolonialism/nationalism binary that dominates the study of India, the contributors assess the benefits of colonial modernity and place humiliation, dignity, and spatial exclusion at the center of Indian historiography. Several essays discuss the ways Dalits used the colonial courts and legislature to gain minority rights in the early twentieth century, while others highlight Dalit activism in social and religious spheres. The contributors also examine the struggle of contemporary middle-class Dalits to reconcile their caste and class, intercaste tensions among Sikhs, and the efforts by Dalit writers to challenge dominant constructions of secular and class-based citizenship while emphasizing the ongoing destructiveness of caste identity. In recovering the long history of Dalit struggles against caste violence, exclusion, and discrimination, Dalit Studies outlines a new agenda for the study of India, enabling a significant reconsideration of many of the Indian academy's core assumptions. Contributors: D. Shyam Babu, Laura Brueck, Sambaiah Gundimeda, Gopal Guru, Rajkumar Hans, Chinnaiah Jangam, Surinder Jodhka, P. Sanal Mohan, Ramnarayan Rawat, K. Satyanarayana

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book starts with an exploration of the specificities of Dalit Women in India. Dalit women constitute a lower segment in Indian society and suffer from dual disadvantages: (a) of being Dalit and (b) being women. These women suffer all deprivations which their caste group as a whole suffer. Besides, they have to undergo additional hardships because of their gender. Dalit women have to struggle harder to secure basic necessities of life, viz., food, fuel and water. The interconnection between caste and gender was not brought to the fore and category of Dalit women figured neither in women s studies nor in caste studies. Admittedly, the problems of the Dalit women have not received adequate attention of the mainstream women s movement. Contrary to the belief of the mainstream women s movement, the liberation of the women is not a uniform or undifferentiated domain. There is a general consensus among the contributors to this volume that the Dalit women is a separate category and they have typical problems as compared to other women in our society. The contributors analyse the very real problems faced by Dalit women in different spheres. This study presents a new approach and theoretical perspective for the study of all India social reality of crucial issues concerning Dalit women. This book will attract a very wide readership among those interested in Women s Studies, Dalit Studies and Sociology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In fulfilling the long-awaited need for a constructive and critical rethinking of Dalit theology this book offers and explores the synoptic healing stories as a relevant biblical paradigm for Dalit theology in order to help redress the lacuna between Dalit theology and the social practice of the Indian Church. Peniel Rajkumar's starting point is that the growing influence of Dalit theology in academic circles is incompatible with the praxis of the Indian Church which continues to be passive in its attitude towards the oppression of the Dalits both within and outside the Church. The theological reasons for this lacuna between Dalit theology and the Church's praxis, Rajkumar suggests, lie in the content of Dalit theology, especially the biblical paradigms explored, which do not offer adequate scope for engagement in praxis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a ground-breaking intervention on Dalit politics in India. Challenging received ideas, it uses a comparative framework to understand Dalit mobilisations for political power, social equality and justice. The monograph traces the emergence of Dalit consciousness and its different strands in north and south India — from colonial to contemporary times — and interrogates key notions and events. These include: the debate regarding core themes such as the Hindu–Muslim cleavage in the north and caste in the south; the extent to which Dalits and other backward castes (OBC) base their anti-Brahminism on similar ideologies; and why Dalits in Uttar Pradesh (north India) succeeded in gaining power while they did not do so in the region of erstwhile Andhra Pradesh (south India), where Dalit consciousness is more evolved. Drawing on archival material, fieldwork and case studies, this volume puts forward an insightful and incisive analysis. It will be of great interest to researchers and scholars of Dalit studies and social exclusion, Indian politics and sociology.

Within this vibrant mosaic, minorities in India encompass a wide spectrum, ranging from religious minorities to caste and sexual minorities, language minorities, and gender minorities. With such a diversified group of people living in the nation, it becomes important to understand and reflect on the obstacles faced by the minorities in India. Despite facing historical and contemporary challenges, these minority groups contribute significantly to India's cultural, social, and economic fabric, enriching the nation's pluralistic identity. Embracing diversity as strength and fostering a culture of empathy and understanding are integral to India's aspirations for a harmonious and inclusive society. This book is an attempt to understand the obstacles of minorities in India from a multidisciplinary perspective. With contributions from researchers around the country, we hope that this book will assist professionals, academicians, feminist psychologists, sociologists, and social workers worldwide.
