Book excerpt: Autofiction: A Female Francophone Aesthetic of Exile explores the multiple aspects of exile, displacement, mobility, and identity as expressed in contemporary autofictional work written in French by women writers from across the francophone world. Drawing on postcolonial theory, gender theory, and autobiographical theory, the book analyses narratives of exile by six authors who are shaped by their multiple locales of attachment: Kim Lefvre (Vietnam/France), Gisle Pineau (Guadeloupe/mainland France), Nina Bouraoui (Algeria/France), Michle Rakotoson (Madagascar/France), Vronique Tadjo (Cte d'Ivoire/France), and Abla Farhoud (Lebanon/Quebec). In this way, the book argues that the French colonial past continues to mould female articulations of mobility and identity in the postcolonial present. Responding to gaps in the critical discourse of exile, namely gender, this book brings genre in both its forms - gender and literary genre - to bear on narratives of exile, arguing that the reconceptualization of categories of mobility occurs specifically in women's autofictional writing. The six authors complicate discussions of exile as they are highly mobile, hybrid subjects. This rootless existence, however, often renders them alienated and 'out of place'. While ensuring not to trivialize the very real difficulties faced by those whose exile is not a matter of choice, the book argues that the six authors experience their hybridity as both a literal and a metaphorical exile, a source of both creativity and trauma.

Book excerpt: There’s no such thing as escaping the Wildensterns . . . It’s been three years since Nathaniel Wildenstern left Ireland and his ruthless family behind. But no one turns his back on the Wildensterns, the powerful family controlling what was once the British Empire. While Nate’s been gone, one of his maniacal cousins has been hard at work researching engimals—the bizarre living machines with the brains of animals—with the intent of creating the ultimate new species. When Nate learns what his cousin has been up to, he knows he must return and put a stop to it. But in his absence, his clan has become even more despised for its merciless hunger for power. For Nate to succeed, he’ll have to return in secret—because wherever the Wildensterns go, violence and betrayal are sure to follow.

Book excerpt: Have you ever wondered what happened to Daisy Buchanan after the Great Gatsby was murdered in his swimming pool on Long Island in the summer of 1922? She and Tom Buchanan fled to Europe where they met almost everybody worth knowing in the roaring twenties: the Hemingways, the Fitzgeralds, Pablo Picasso, who painted her portrait, Gerald and Sara Murphy, as well as the Prince of Wales. After years of interviews and with the help of Daisy’s diaries, her daughter, Pamela, has reconstructed Daisy’s life in Paris, in England, and in Spain where Daisy left the privileged life she had known to become involved on the loyalist side of the Spanish Civil War.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authentic eye-witness account of a young English governess in St Petersburg (Petrograd) during the Russian revolution of 1917 – with over 30 photographs – edited by Muriel delaHaye. Miss Daisy’s secret day-to-day diary reveals the trials and dilemmas of her life and that of her two sisters, May and Ida, also employed as English governesses. Daisy, known as the tomboy of the family, loved dancing and excelled at the very energetic Russian dance. In 1917 she is employed by the daughter and grandchildren of the Naval Minister, Ivan Constantin Grigorovitch, living at the Naval College on Vasilevski Island which is attacked and ransacked by the Bolsheviks. She is imprisoned with the children in the cellars until she makes known she holds a British passport. She is then isolated in a strange house alone with the children who have chickenpox, at the mercy of marauding Red Army soldiers who are searching for weapons. May, known as ‘the bookworm’, is employed by the Swedish-Russian engineering representative for Scandinavia, living in Terijoki, Finland, where even here the Red Guards plunder what they can. Ida, a true romantic who loves to flirt and has many admirers, is in the most dangerous situation, employed by the stepson of Grand duke Paul (the Tsar’s uncle) and his wife Aylia (sister of the infamous Anna Verubova, close friend of the Tsarina and Rasputin). When Aylia escapes to Copenhagen, Ida is left alone in their apartment with the children until she agrees to make the dangerous journey to reunite them with their mother. She is interviewed by Lenin before given permission to leave. As the terrors of the October 1917 revolution approach with food shortages, strikes and protest marches, each sister is faced with a dilemma: they don’t have enough money to get back to England. The discovery of a last letter from the Tsarina to her friend Anna which mentions ‘Miss Ida’ prompted the publication of this diary. Since 2017 is the centenary of the Russian revolution, a great many memories of this event will be forthcoming and of interest to young and old alike.

Their lives intertwine with Mara's and each other as they struggle spiritually while facing well-financed high-tech conspiracies to turn Hibernia and the other earths into ethnically-cleansed MacCarthy family dictatorships.
