Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dairying and Stock Raising To the dairyman, the problem of help is a serious one. It is no less so in Oregon than elsewhere. Good men are paid from $20 to $30 a month in winter, with board, and up to $40 in summer. For these prices it is p'ossible to secure competent help. The only solution of the problem is in the introduction of milking machines. Fortunately, these devices have been sufficiently perfected to be practicable and are being generally adopted among the more progressive dairymen with large herds. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Milch Cows and Dairy Farming: Comprising the Breeds, Breeding, and Management in Health and Disease, of Dairy and Other Stock This work is designed to embody the most recent information on the subject of dairy farming. My aim has been to make a practically useful book. With this view, I have treated of the several breeds of stock, the diseases to which they are subject, the established principles of breeding, the feeding and management of milch cows, the raising of calves intended for the dairy, and the culture of grasses and plants to be used as fodder. For the chapter on the diseases of stock, I am largely indebted to Dr. C. M. Wood, Professor of the Theory and Practice of Veterinary Medicine, and to Dr. Geo. H. Dadd, Professor of Anatomy and Physiology, both of the Boston Veterinary Institute. If this chapter contributes anything to promote a more humane and judicious treatment of cattle when suffering from dis ease, I shall feel amply repaid for the labor bestowed upon the whole work. The chapter on the Dutch dairy, which I have trans lated from the German, will be found to be of great practical value, as suggesting much that is applicable to our American dairies. This chapter has never before, to my knowledge, appeared in English. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dairy Stock: Its Selection, Diseases, and Produce, With a Description of the Brittany Breed This small volume is devoted to the elucidation of a variety of subjects connected with the selection and management of dairy-stock, which are of acknowledged interest to agriculturists, as well as to the Veterinary Profession. A work on the diseases of cattle has been long a desideratum, and though the Author has not attempted to exhaust the subject, he trusts the limits to which he has confined himself, may not be regarded as altogether insufficient for present purposes. On the use of the Roman Bath, the Spaying of Dairy Cows, and the changes induced in milk under a variety of circumstances, the Author has stated received opinions, and advanced his own with all freedom, and, he trusts, with fairness. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Beef Bonanza: Or, How to Get Rich on the Plains, Being a Description of Cattle-Growing, Sheep-Farming, Horse-Raising, and Dairying in the West I have been a resident of the West for twelve years, and my Official duties have called me during that time into nearly every State and Territory between the Missouri and the Pacific Coast. Almost every valley, hill, mountain, and pass of which I have written has been ridden over by me on horseback, and I have observed everywhere the unbounded capacity of the West, not only for stock-growing, but farming, mining, and manufacturing. To me the West is a never-ceasing source of wonder, and I cannot imagine why people remain in the over-crowded East, while so many lands and chances are to the west of them. The West to-day is not what it was yesterday, and it will not be to morrow what it is today. New discoveries, new developments and improvements are constantly being made, and a new West springing up. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dairying in War and Peace Production increases to supply an expanding market for milk may be expected as the result of several factors. (1) Feed supplies for dairying may be increased as a consequence of further declines in the number of work animals, by improvement in the varieties of feed crops produced, and by an increased use of lime and fertilizers on crop and pasture land. (2) Ah improvement in the efficiency of the average dairy cow appears likely, not only because of continued culling of inferior animals and more effective disease control, but also because of a rapidly expanding artificial-breeding program. Most of the improve 'ments from.the widespread use of improved sires, made possible by arti ficial breeding, are still to be achieved, and over a longer period it is possible that productive capacity will be increased by cross breeding. (3) Further mechanization provides a basis for increased operating effi cisney of the dairy enterprise. Shifts in the urban population, accompanying the probable future growth of industry in the South and West, may bring about changes in the regional pattern of milk production for fluid use. 'with relatively few alternative livestock enterprises that compete effectively with dairying, an expansion of milk production in the major manufactured dairy-product areas appears probable as methods of dairy processing and transportation are further improved. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Better Dairy Farming: The Breeding, Feeding, Handling and Care of Dairy Cattle Professor E. H. Farrington of the department of dairy husbandry at the University of Wisconsin asks his class of farm boys at the end of each term this question, "What languages do you speak besides English?" One boy answered, "I can speak a little Norwegian and a little German, and I understand horses and cows." That is the very object in writing this book. We want to make the language of cows a little better understood by the dairymen of this country. To know about cows, the farms and the best farm practices in different parts of our great country will make a man a better farmer on his own farm. With the reading of this book we hope that farmers may have their vision broadened and perhaps a suggestion will be found that will change a practice so that a little more money may be made and saved. At the time of writing this preface farming is said to be in a bad way. The lawmakers and the others are all busy trying to help the farmer. Some good will come of their efforts. We think, however, that the most good will come through the efforts of the farmer himself. He will build for himself on his own farm and will build for himself and for his neighbors when he joins with them in the community and state enterprises which he will help to build, at the foundation first, in his own community. Co-operative effort will make for "better farming, better business and better living." The dairy farmer is the best off of all. Conditions in Wisconsin and New York and the other dairy states show that. This is no time for anything but optimism because the demand for milk and dairy products is growing and the market for these is the foundation of the business. With the market for milk and dairy products becoming increasingly good the market for surplus dairy cattle will become better. The object in writing this book is to help some with all this. We have enjoyed writing it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
