H. Lawrence by Catherine Carswell D. H. Lawrence is best known for his novels Sons and Lovers, The Rainbow, Women in Love and Lady Chatterley's Lover. In these books, Lawrence explores the possibilities for life within an industrial setting. In particular Lawrence is concerned with the nature of relationships that can be had within such a setting. Though often classed as a realist, Lawrence in fact uses his characters to give form to his personal philosophy. His depiction of sexuality, though seen as shocking when his work was first published in the early 20th century, has its roots in this highly personal way of thinking and being. In his later years Lawrence developed the potentialities of the short novel form in The Ladybird, The Fox, The Captain's Doll, St Mawr, The Virgin and the Gypsy and The Escaped Cock.

His works was influenced with the effects of modernity and industrialisation. His works explore issues such as sexuality, emotional health, vitality and instrict. He wrote 'The Rainbow', 'Women in Love', 'Lady Chatterley's Lover' besides 'Sons and Lovers'. The main theme of this novel 'Sons and Lovers', is 'Family Psychology, and the Oedipus complex' the story focuses that Paul thinks death would reunite him with his mother, but he doesn't commit suicide and starts living a good life and get over his mother's death. The author has focused on family relationship and it narrates the unhappy marriage between Mrs Morel and and drinking coal-miner. Paul becomes very possessive for her mother's corpse even. He doesn't allow even his neighbours to come & see her corpse. The beauty of this novel is that it may be based on the author's own experience and self. It seems as most of the matter related to the author's own early life in the midland coal-mining village of Eastwood. His father was a coal-miner with little education. In this novel the family conflicts of the Morel couple stands similar to the Lawrence couple. 'Sons & Lovers' narrates how the conflict usually takes place in such places. Its presentation is somehow very original and touchy. This novel is Lawrence's most autobiographical novel.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The third published novel of D. H. Lawrence, taken by many to be his earliest masterpiece, tells the story of Paul Morel, a young man and budding artist. Richard Aldington explains the semi-autobiographical nature of his masterpiece: When you have experienced Sons and Lovers you have lived through the agonies of the young Lawrence striving to win free from his old life'. Generally, it is not only considered as an evocative portrayal of working-class life in a mining community, but also an intense study of family, class and early sexual relationships. David Herbert Lawrence (11 September 1885 - 2 March 1930) was an important and controversial English writer of the 20th century, whose prolific and diverse output included novels, short stories, poems, plays, essays, travel books, paintings, translations, literary criticism and personal letters. His collected works represent an extended reflection upon the dehumanizing effects of modernity and industrialisation. In them, Lawrence confronts issues relating to emotional health and vitality, spontaneity, sexuality, and instinctive behaviour. Lawrence's unsettling opinions earned him many enemies and he endured hardships, official persecution, censorship and misrepresentation of his creative work throughout the second half of his life, much of which he spent in a voluntary exile he called his "savage pilgrimage." At the time of his death, his public reputation was that of a pornographer who had wasted his considerable talents. E. M. Forster, in an obituary notice, challenged this widely held view, describing him as "the greatest imaginative novelist of our generation." Later, the influential Cambridge critic F. R. Leavis championed both his artistic integrity and his moral seriousness, placing much of Lawrence's fiction within the canonical "great tradition" of the English novel. He is now generally valued as a visionary thinker and a significant representative of modernism in English literature, although some feminists object to the attitudes toward women and sexuality found in his works. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its publication in 1913, D. H. Lawrence's powerful and passionate third novel stands as one of the greatest autobiographical novels of the twentieth century. Here is the story of artist Paul Morel as a young man, his powerful relationship with his possessive mother, his passionate love affair with Miriam Leivers, his intense liaison with married Clara Dawes. Here, too, England's Derbyshire springs to life with both is sooty mining villages and deep green pastures, a setting as full of contrasts as the deep emotions that rule this remarkable book. Sons and Lovers is rich with universal truths about relationships; moreover, it brims with what Alfred Kazin has called Lawrence's "magic sympathy, between himself and life." Continues Mr. Kazin: "No other writer of his imaginative standing has in our time written books that are so open to life...Since for Lawrence the great subject of literature was not the writer's own consciousness but consciousness between people, the living felt relationship between them, it was his very concern to represent the 'shimmer' of life, the 'wholeness'...that made possible his brilliance as a novelist." With an Introduction by John Gross

All his strength and energy she drew into herself through some channel which united them. She did not want to meet him so that there were two of them man and woman together. She wanted to draw all of him into her. It urged him to an intensity like madness which fascinated him as drug-taking might. He was discussing Michael Angelo. It felt to her as if she were fingering the very quivering tissue the very protoplasm of life as she heard him. It gave her deepest satisfaction. And in the end it frightened her. There he lay in the white intensity of his search and his voice gradually filled her with fear so level it was almost inhuman as if in a trance." D.H. Lawrence, Sons and Lovers

Lawrence, originally published by B.W. Huebsch Publishers. The Modern Library placed it ninth on their list of the 100 best novels of the 20th century. While the novel initially received a lukewarm critical reception, along with allegations of obscenity, it is today regarded as a masterpiece by many critics and is often regarded as Lawrence''s finest achievement. The third published novel of D. H. Lawrence, taken by many to be his earliest masterpiece, tells the story of Paul Morel, a young man and budding artist. The original 1913 edition was heavily edited by Edward Garnett who removed 80 passages, roughly a tenth of the text.[citation needed] The novel is dedicated to Garnett. Garnett, as the literary advisor to the publishing firm Duckworth, was an important figure in leading Lawrence further into the London literary world during the years 1911 and 1912.[citation needed] It was not until the 1992 Cambridge University Press edition was released that the missing text was restored.Lawrence began working on the novel in the period of his mother''s illness, and often expresses this sense of his mother''s wasted life through his female protagonist Gertrude Morel. Letters written around the time of its development clearly demonstrate the admiration he felt for his mother - viewing her as a ''clever, ironical, delicately moulded woman'' - and her apparently unfortunate marriage to his coal-miner father, a man of ''sanguine temperament'' and instability. He believed that his mother had married below her class status. Lydia Lawrence wasn''t born into the middle-class.[clarification needed] This personal family conflict experienced by Lawrence provided him with the impetus for the first half of his novel - in which both William, the older brother, and Paul Morel become increasingly contemptuous of their father - and the subsequent exploration of Paul Morel''s antagonising relationships with both his lovers, which are both incessantly affected by his allegiance to his mother. The first draft of Lawrence''s novel is now lost and was never completed, which seems to be directly due to his mother''s illness. He did not return to the novel for three months, at which point it was titled ''Paul Morel''. The penultimate draft of the novel coincided with a remarkable change in Lawrence''s life, as his health was thrown into turmoil and he resigned his teaching job to spend time in Germany. This plan was never followed, however, as he met and married the German minor aristocrat, Frieda Weekley, who was the wife of a former professor of his at the University of Nottingham. According to Frieda''s account of their first meeting, she and Lawrence talked about Oedipus and the effects of early childhood on later life within twenty minutes of meeting. The third draft of ''Paul Morel'' was sent to the publishing house Heinemann; the response, a rather violent reaction, came from William Heinemann himself. His reaction captures the shock and newness of Lawrence''s novel, ''the degradation of the mother [as explored in this novel], supposed to be of gentler birth, is almost inconceivable''; he encouraged Lawrence to redraft the novel one more time. In addition to altering the title to a more thematic ''Sons and Lovers'', Heinemann''s response had reinvigorated Lawrence into vehemently defending his novel and its themes as a coherent work of art. To justify its form, Lawrence explains, in letters to Garnett, that it is a ''great tragedy'' and a ''great book'', one that mirrors the ''tragedy of thousands of young men in England''....David Herbert Richards "D. H." Lawrence (11 September 1885 - 2 March 1930) was an English novelist, poet, playwright, essayist, literary critic and painter. His collected works represent, among other things, an extended reflection upon the dehumanising effects of modernity and industrialisation. Some of the issues Lawrence explores are emotional health, vitality, spontaneity and instinct.
