Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are you looking for effective ways to learn Czech? New ways? Do you want to learn words that are useful, and that you will often hear and use? Start learning those that are most frequent! This book draws on A Frequency Dictionary of Czech (Core Vocabulary for Learners) published by Routledge in 2011. In the introduction, the authors say that just 1000 MOST FREQUENT WORDS might account for 85 PER CENT OF SPEECH! The problem is that when you want to learn a word in Czech, especially a verb or a noun, each has many forms, so I’ve decided to write a book that would show these various forms to learners. In addition, you can find some useful phrases where these words are shown “in action”. My plan is to cover all those 1000 most frequent Czech words in the upcoming years, and this is the first publication in that series. WHO IS THE BOOK FOR? I believe this book is suitable for people who have already learnt at least some basics of the Czech language, not for complete beginners. However, I am sure it can be useful for those who have already got to a higher level – they can use it as a reference book, or explore more through the links collected inside. This is not a textbook, and it cannot teach you Czech grammar. It is a handbook, made to show you all the forms of the most frequent Czech verbs and nouns. There are 53 words in this book because there are 53 weeks in a year. Well, there are 52, but one or two days are then left over, so there are 53 words to cover them, too. I hope you'll find this book useful, and look forward to hearing from you!

Book excerpt: The annual Text, Speech and Dialogue Conference (TSD), which originated in 1998, is now starting its second decade. So far almost 900 authors from 45 countries have contributed to the proceedings. TSD constitutes a recognizedplatform for the presen- tion and discussion of state-of-the-art technology and recent achievements in the ?eld of natural language processing. It has become an interdisciplinary forum, interweaving the themes of speech technology and language processing. The conference attracts - searchers not only from Central and Eastern Europe, but also from other parts of the world. Indeed, one of its goals has always been to bring together NLP researchers with different interests from different parts of the world and to promote their mutual co- eration. One of the ambitions of the conference is, as its title says, not only to deal with dialogue systems as such, but also to contribute to improving dialogue between researchers in the two areas of NLP, i. e. , between text and speech people. In our view, the TSD conference was successful in this respect in 2008 as well. This volume contains the proceedings of the 11th TSD conference, held in Brno, Czech Republic in September 2008. Following the review process, 79 papers were - ceptedoutof173submitted,anacceptancerateof45. 7%.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the empirical, descriptive sections of this monograph the author develops standard argumentation in favour of the structurally-based transformational nature of Wh-questions in English and Czech. She demonstrates how Wh-questions in Slavic languages first impacted the theoretical discussion and how their description challenged some earlier assumptions based on specifically English data. The study provides a historical survey of the analyses which reflect the development of the field. Individual chapters are devoted to comparing extraction domains, locality conditions, and constraints defined in terms of the structures proposed. The Wh-characteristics are compared with Focus/ Contrastive Topic re-orderings, which leads to an improved structural analysis, using the concept of a Split CP. In spite of the demonstrable progress of the research, many so far unexplained aspects of the Wh-phenomena will without doubt continue to provide an interesting source for future research on the structure of human language.

Further, it aims at a well described survey of how simultaneity is expressed by native speakers in their own language. On the basis of real production data the book answers the questions of how native speakers express temporal simultaneity in general, and how learners at different levels of proficiency deal with this situation under experimental test conditions. Furthermore, the results of this study shed new light on our understanding of aspect in general, and on its acquisition by adult learners.
