Each of the plays has been edited for more understandability and length. The intent of the book was to make the works more accessible without making the language modern. When audiences see a Shakespeare play, they have only one time to grasp the words as they are spoken. Audience members do not have time to look at lengthy explanations or notes about words or expressions. Therefore, this edition of these five plays, presents the plays so that audience members as well as actors can follow the plays with little difficulty. Some words have been changed to accomplish this. In certain speeches, subjects or verbs were supplied for understandability. Because Shakespeare used many pronouns, these plays make use of more nouns so that the meaning of who or what is being spoken about becomes more clear. The book also has some useful tools for the director and actors. A chart has been provided for each play that lists each character by act and scene. This can be very useful when there is a need to double cast actors. In addition, a “combination roles” page has also been added which gives suggestions for doubling parts for a smaller company. To help at rehearsals, page numbers for the beginning of each act and scene is provided on a single page for each play. Finally, each play has been broken into “beats” for the actor and the director. It is the hope of the author of this book that more people will find excitement in reading, performing, staging, or viewing Shakespeare because of the edited versions for understandability. Book excerpt: This history of the changing perceptions of, and attitudes towards Europe in nineteenth-century Bengal among the Bengali intelligentsia examines in detail the ideas of three key men during a time of social, cultural, and intellectual confrontation between the East and the West: Bhudev Mukhopadhyay, Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay, and Swami Vivekananda. It explores their attempts to grapple with the intellectual dilemma of their times as represented by the East-West encounter. The three men possessed considerable scholarship and erudition, and came from the same social milieu of upper-class urban Bengal, yet each had very different perceptions of the West. The nineteenth-century Bengali experience under colonialism was part of a global phenomenon inasmuch as the province, like many other areas of Asia, was subject to European imperialism. Bengal was thus "perhaps the earliest manifestation of the revolution in the mental world of Asia's elite groups." Nearer home, it represented the general experience of the Indian subcontinent as a whole, but at "its most complex and well informed level." These changing perceptions and attitudes mediated all new initiatives in the society and polity of Asian peoples in modern times. The changes, in their turn, were crucially influenced by perceptions of Europe. The author explores the ideas regarding Europe as presented in the writings of these three very influential writers, who represented as well as shaped widely held opinions. The book touches on orientalism, hermeneutics, cultural contact between Europe and Asia, European expansion, the nineteenth-century 'Renaissance' in India, and the colonial middle classes in Asia. It is a significant addition to the meagre literature available on Indian perceptions of the West. In his new introduction to this new edition the author links the book to the wider themes in his current research; he also explains points in his argument which, he feels, have been misunderstood. Appended to this edition is a memorial lecture by the author in honour of his teacher, Susobhan Sarkar, which reassesses the concept of the 'Bengal Renaissance.'

Book excerpt: Literature and film both carry forward narratives but the manner in which they do so are markedly different. If one were to use a metaphor from science one could say that in interpreting literature there is one degree of freedom more in that one is first translating the words into sensual data and then into meaning, whereas in cinema, the translation into imagery has already been done. When Grigori Kozintsev translates Shakespeare’s King Lear into the language of cinema, it is like the ‘word made flesh’. When the word has been made flesh, an idea has been given concrete shape and one could say that an idea at it source is superior as an artefact to be used or something to be consumed than the material object made out of it. This is the same way an unrealized intention is purer in every way than the intention carried out. On the other hand, many films are also superior to the literary sources they draw from, especially popular literature and I would cite The Godfather as an example. The reason is that popular literature often caters to the baser instincts through titillation and awakening the voyeuristic impulse while a serious work of cinema naturally refuses to exploit such opportunities. It is also possible that the literary source, in offering a profusion of words, would benefit through understatement. As an instance I would say that Dostoyevsky is one of the most excessive of great writers while Robert Bresson is among the sparest of filmmakers, which is perhaps why Bresson’s version of A gentle woman improves upon the writer. What is valuable about the book is the vast array of issues raised - directly or indirectly. Even when an issue has not been explicitly articulated there is always the sense to be got - of the deep probing that the subject deserves. It is with these questions in mind that I wish Dipsikha Bhagawati’s Literature and Film : From Mute to Motion all success.
