Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If we want to improve life on earth and our own lives, it is necessary to find a new guide: one that can meet the challenges of our time and of the future. The old guides were good in principle, but have become bogged down in calcified structures, often accomplishing the opposite of what was originally intended. The development of society makes it necessary to find new guiding principles from time to time. To do so, however, we need to know what the history was, how the present society is structured, and how it is likely to develop. The author aims to discover this by highlighting the following topics: Information: truth and lies Conspiracies: real and imagined conspiracies Nodes and choices: in history and as individuals Education Religions Cultures and subcultures Good and evil Resolving conflicts Freedom Justice Security How a poor country can become rich. Nature and the environment and global warming Art Creativity The meaning of life Peace Reform of the United Nations Health: Physical and mental Advice on how to become happy What ultimately matters is how to safeguard and promote life on earth. According to the author, making the right choice at certain crucial moments (called "nodes") is of great importance. Ultimately, it is about love and the unity of all and everything,

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Disasters, Gender and Access to Healthcare: Women in Coastal Bangladesh emphasizes women’s experiences in cyclone disasters being confined with gendered identity and responsibilities in developing socio-economic conditions with minimum healthcare facilities. The study is situated in the coastal region of Bangladesh, considered as one of the most disaster-prone regions in the world. Bangladesh has been working on disaster management for a long time; however, considering gender perspective, the book reveals gaps in plans and raises serious questions about the successful implementation of healthcare strategies after disasters. The book also describes the pre–during–after disaster periods showing the full picture of a disaster attack in victims’ own words. Case studies of seriously affected victims give the reader an opportunity to understand the situations created for women during a disaster attack in a remote area with poor transport and healthcare facilities. These unique research findings will contribute to the broader context of gender, disaster and health studies. This book will be helpful for university staff and students of different disciplines including Anthropology, Disaster Management, Gender Studies and Geography and South Asian Regional Studies and be invaluable reading for disaster managers, policy makers, aid workers, development partners, NGOs and government, especially in disaster-prone countries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tropical cyclones in Southern Africa, also known as hurricanes or typhoons in other regions of the world, is a hot subject for academic research. This focus has been magnified by the need to consider tropical cyclones in the context of other global development agendas, that includes the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its inseparable 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Paris Agreement, the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction and Habitat III’s New Urban Agenda. The ambitious SDGs challenge global and community leaders to make sure development addresses the nexus among poverty, inequality and employment creation, as well as care for the earth and its natural resources and biodiversity. The SDGs further present an agenda to eradicate hunger, bring quality education and sustain water and sanitation. The infrastructure development, human settlements, sustainable consumption and production, climate change, biodiversity and the ocean (blue) economy agendas are also pitched. Lastly, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development encourages partnerships on delivering various programmes and projects at all spatial levels. However, as tropical cyclones continue to make multiple landfalls and ravage Southern Africa and other parts of the world, the achievement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development is threatened. To this end, this book addresses this gap by documenting the implications of tropical cyclones, drawing examples and case studies from recent tropical cyclones such as cyclone Idai and cyclone Kenneth that resulted in catastrophic impacts in 2019. The book comes as part of a series with three volumes. The other volumes include “Cyclones in Southern Africa Vol. 1: Interfacing the Catastrophic Impact of Cyclone Idai with SDGs in Zimbabwe” and “Cyclones in Southern Africa Vol 2: Foundational and Fundamental Topics”. Given the foregoing, the book is suitable as a read for several professionals and disciplines such as tourism and hospitality studies, economics, sustainable development, development studies, environmental sciences, arts, geography, life sciences, politics, planning and public health.

Book excerpt: In the tradition of Into the Wild, here is the riveting story of a young man seeking his own truth and finding adventure in the awesome, unforgiving power of nature. Will Chaffey is eighteen when he boards a plane in New York bound for Australia. Taking time off to work and travel, Will meets an enigmatic wanderer and herpetologist. Together they cross the inland desert to the tropical northwest coast, home to the saltwater crocodile, a known man- eater and a predator who has been hunting since the age of the dinosaurs. They devise a plan to explore the remote Prince Regent River, a trek so dangerous it had never been attempted by outsiders. Passing through harsh, primeval country, shadowed by their own exhaustion, and physically worn down, they find themselves locked in a life-and-death struggle when their food runs out and, unable to leave, they are stalked by a hungry crocodile. Filled with scenes of great natural beauty, Swimming with Crocodiles is at once the affecting account of a journey into adulthood and a hair- raising epic of survival.

Book excerpt: This book conducts a systematic inquiry into the tragic deaths caused by natural disasters at different geographic scales. It employs key disaster concepts and classification of disasters to understand the high mortality rates and the various factors associated with these deaths. Deaths are the direct and immediate impact of disaster events, which have remained a major concern for disaster managers and policy-makers all over the world. Using primary research and secondary data, this book provides a comprehensive analysis of various facets of disaster deaths such as trends, circumstances and causes, and determinants at global, regional, national, and subnational scales. It offers a holistic perspective on disaster mortality, which has been lacking for some time. The book not only fills this research gap but also suggests important policy implications for disaster managers and policy makers working in multilateral, bilateral, local, and international nongovernmental organizations (NGOs). These policies include effective strategies to significantly reduce the risk of deaths caused by natural disasters, which are explored through chapters written in a clear and accessible style. Drawing together the case studies on past major disasters as well as recent ones, the book provides new and critical insights into deaths precipitated by natural disasters. Suitable for both technical and nontechnical readers, the book has a broader appeal and will thus be useful for practitioners, researchers, students, as well as activists in the area of hazards and disasters who are interested in studying mortality due to extreme natural events.
