Book Synopsis The Economics of World War I by : Stephen Broadberry
Download or read book The Economics of World War I written by Stephen Broadberry and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2005-09-29 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique volume offers a definitive new history of European economies at war from 1914 to 1918. It studies how European economies mobilised for war, how existing economic institutions stood up under the strain, how economic development influenced outcomes and how wartime experience influenced post-war economic growth. Leading international experts provide the first systematic comparison of economies at war between 1914 and 1918 based on the best available data for Britain, Germany, France, Russia, the USA, Italy, Turkey, Austria-Hungary and the Netherlands. The editors' overview draws some stark lessons about the role of economic development, the importance of markets and the damage done by nationalism and protectionism. A companion volume to the acclaimed The Economics of World War II, this is a major contribution to our understanding of total war.

This book was released on 2017-11-21 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cycles of Prosperity and Depression in the United States, Great Britain and Germany: A Study of Monthly Data, 1902 1908 Germany suffered from depression in 1902. Crops were rather poor, and general business continued at a low ebb as in the preceding year. The stock market tended downward. Reserves were plentiful and money rates were very low throughout the year. Slight depression ruled on the whole in the United States in 1903. Crops were good but not as large as in 1902. Iron and steel production declined heavily toward the end of the year though the total for the year was good. Unemployment increased somewhat. Stock prices dropped severely, resulting in heavy liquidation and bankruptcies. Interest rates ruled high, loans were extremely hard to float and short time loans were resorted to. Funds borrowed abroad were recalled by Europeans. This forced the banks in turn to recall loans, which in turn compelled the borrower to dispose of his securi ties. New capital for industrials or railroads could not be secured by the flotation of securities and hence retrenchment was the policy pursued. Book Synopsis Lessons from the Great Depression by : Peter Temin
Download or read book Lessons from the Great Depression written by Peter Temin and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1991-10-08 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lessons from the Great Depression provides an integrated view of the depression, covering the experience in Britain, France, Germany, and the United States. Do events of the 1930s carry a message for the 1990s? Lessons from the Great Depression provides an integrated view of the depression, covering the experience in Britain, France, Germany, and the United States. It describes the causes of the depression, why it was so widespread and prolonged, and what brought about eventual recovery. Peter Temin also finds parallels in recent history, in the relentless deflationary course followed by the U.S. Federal Reserve Board and the British government in the early 1980s, and in the dogged adherence by the Reagan administration to policies generated by a discredited economic theory—supply-side economics.

Book Synopsis Theorists of Economic Growth from David Hume to the Present by : W. W. Rostow
Download or read book Theorists of Economic Growth from David Hume to the Present written by W. W. Rostow and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1992-09-24 with total page 733 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This history of theories and theorists of economic growth elucidates the economic theory, economic history, and public policy observations of the renowned scholar W. W. Rostow. Looking at the economic growth theories of the classic economists up to 1870, Rostow compares Hume and Adam Smith, Malthus and Ricardo, and J.S. Mill and Karl Marx. He then examines the period 1870-1939 and its economic theorists, including Schumpeter, Colin Clark, Kuznets, and Harrod, and surveys the three forms of growth analysis in the postwar era: formal models, statistical morphology, and development theories. This authoritative overview also includes an agenda of unresolved problems in growth analysis and a description of the five major tasks statesmen will confront over the next several generations.
