Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although Constantinople fell to the Turks in 1453, bringing an end to the Eastern Roman Empire which had survived its predecessor in the West by nearly one thousand years, this important book argues that Byzantium did not die, but continued to influence European history all the way up to the beginning of the nineteenth century. The author' s formula “ Byzantium after Byzantium” defines several centuries of world history. Iorga points out the great contributions of Byzantine civilization to the Western world, especially during the Renaissance. He demonstrates that Byzantium survived through its people and local autonomies, as well as through its exiles. They continued the Byzantine ideas, aspirations, education, and way of life. All of this allows us to speak of a Byzantium after Byzantium.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the Association of American Publishers Professional and Scholarly Publishing Award for Computer Science Over the course of several decades, the Pentagon's Information Processing Techniques Office (IPTO) helped transform computing from a cumbersome enterprise based on batch processing to the instantly interactive, graphically rich, highly intelligent computing of today. With the purpose of improving command and control systems for the military, IPTO researchers strengthened time-sharing, laid the groundwork for graphics and parallel processing, contributed to the study of artificial intelligence, and developed the wide-area network that came to be known as the Internet. Transforming Computer Technology examines these and other developments at the Defense Department's Advanced Research Projects Agency in its heyday between 1962 and 1986. The authors show how Pentagon programs affected significant developments in both computer science and engineering. They analyze the management of the office, the origins and growth of important IPTO programs, and the interaction of the staff with the R & D community. They pay special attention to IPTO's role in executing research at the leading edge of computing and networking and in working with the military to transfer that research into practical use. And they show how, by the 1990s, the research results had been assimilated into systems both for the military and for civilian society.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Labor and industrial relations have attracted widespread interest in recent years. Yet in spite of the growing interest in the subject, labor relations continue to be grouped under such fields as economics, history, law, political science, psychology, and sociology making critical examination of the subject quite complex. The purpose of this book is to make this research easier by bringing together a vast array of logically arranged bibliographical information on labor and industrial relations from other disciplines; thus, filling a gap in labor relations bibliography. This work is an invaluable reference tool for those engaged in research on labor and industrial relations. The main section of this book is an annotated bibilography of English-language serials and journals on labor and industrial relations. The bibliography includes traditional academic journals, newsletters, newspapers, and bulletins. For easy access, this work is arranged in a numbered alphabetic sequence. An annotation is included with each bibliography entry to help the reader ascertain the flavor and scope of the articles each serial covers. There is also a full subject index, a publisher's index, geographical index, and title (previous and current) index.
