Download or read book Cut Time written by Carlo Rotella and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2003-08-05 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Carlo Rotella, an award-winning writer and ringside veteran, unearths the hard wisdom in any kind of fight, from barroom dustup to HBO extravaganza. He vividly describes the tough choices and subtle pleasures that come the way of every fighter, from perennial underdogs on the tank-town circuit to the one-time heavyweight champion Larry Holmes, who still spars to retching exhaustion daily. Rotella uncovers the often startling light that boxing sheds on the world beyond the ring. A college student's brief fistic career pinpoints the moment when adulthood arrives. The serenity of a fellow fan shows Rotella how to process the trauma of a car crash. The persistence of a wizened ex-champion reminds him of his grandmother and helps him accept her death. Throughout, Rotella achieves moving resonances between the worlds inside and outside the ropes. He also tackles fascinating questions that have gone largely unexplored until now: How do boxers endure the brutal punishment that is the sport's essence? And why do they come back for more, again and again? As Rotella traces his immersion in the fight world, he achieves what few other writers in that world have: he makes it relevant to us, whether we're fans or not.

Book Synopsis Cutting Time with a Knife by : Michael Leong
Download or read book Cutting Time with a Knife written by Michael Leong and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poetry. Asian American Studies. Like a manual pilfered from an alternate history where science and art never diverged, Michael Leong's new book transforms the periodic table of elements into a kind of concrete poetry. Leong's glowing hieroglyphs show that the poetic Word emerges--as irony from iron--from the whirled atoms of the World itself. Indeed, Leong redefines the space-time of the page as a furnace of pure imagination, where the cadaver of modernist poetics is smelted with black humor, 'form[ing] crystals and other alloys at the boundarues of meaning. Here, we discover that 'Poetry is an ongoing reaction, a turning loose of the future.' For time doesn't exist without the possibility of revolution--and Leong has, in CUTTING TIME WITH A KNIFE, created a true 'chamber of possibilities.'--Andrew Joron
Download or read book Sybil & Cyril written by Jenny Uglow and published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. This book was released on 2022-12-06 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Jenny Uglow, one of our most admired writers, a beautifully illustrated story of a love affair and a dynamic artistic partnership between the wars. In 1922, Cyril Power, a fifty-year-old architect, left his family to work with the twenty-four-year-old Sybil Andrews. They would be together for twenty years. Both became famous for their dynamic, modernist linocuts—streamlined, full of movement and brilliant color, summing up the hectic interwar years. Yet at the same time, they looked back to medieval myths and early music, to country ways that were disappearing from sight. Jenny Uglow’s Sybil & Cyril: Cutting Through Time traces their struggles and triumphs, conflicts and dreams, following them from Suffolk to London, from the New Forest to Vancouver Island. This is a world of futurists, surrealists, and pioneering abstraction, but also of the buzz of the new, of machines and speed, of shops and sport and dance, shining against the threat of depression and looming shadows of war.

Download or read book The Hoarder in You written by Robin Zasio and published by Rodale Books. This book was released on 2012-11-13 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We all have treasured possessions—a favorite pair of shoes, a much-beloved chair, an ever-expanding record collection. But sometimes, this emotional attachment to our belongings can spiral out of control and culminate into a condition called compulsive hoarding. From hobbyists and collectors to pack rats and compulsive shoppers—it is close to impossible for hoarders to relinquish their precious objects, even if it means that stuff takes over their lives and their homes. According to psychologist Dr. Robin Zasio, our fascination with hoarding stems from the fact that most of us fall somewhere on the hoarding continuum. Even though it may not regularly interfere with our everyday lives, to some degree or another, many of us hoard. The Hoarder In You provides practical advice for decluttering and organizing, including how to tame the emotional pull of acquiring additional things, make order out of chaos by getting a handle on clutter, and create an organizational system that reduces stress and anxiety. Dr. Zasio also shares some of the most serious cases of hoarding that she's encountered, and explains how we can learn from these extreme examples—no matter where we are on the hoarding continuum.

Book Synopsis Control of Cutting Vibration and Machining Instability by : C. Steve Suh
Download or read book Control of Cutting Vibration and Machining Instability written by C. Steve Suh and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-08-01 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presents new developments on machine tool vibration control based on discontinuous dynamical systems Machining instability is a topical area, and there are a wide range of publications that cover the topic. However, many of these previous studies have started by assuming that the behavior of the system can be linearised. Meanwhile, there are many recent advances in the fields of signal processing, nonlinear dynamics, and nonlinear control, all of which are relevant to the machining stability problem. This book establishes the fundamentals of cutting mechanics and machine tool dynamics in the simultaneous time-frequency domain. The new nonlinear control theory developed by the authors that facilitates simultaneous control of vibration amplitude in the time-domain and spectral response in the frequency-domain provides the foundation for the development of a controller architecture universally viable for the control of dynamic instability including bifurcation and chaos. Once parameters underlying the coupling, interaction, and evolution of different cutting states and between the tool and workpiece are established, they can then be incorporated into the architecture to create a control methodology that mitigate machining instability and enable robust, chatter-free machine tool design applicable in particular to high speed micro- and nano-machining. Presents new developments on machine tool vibration control based on discontinuous dynamical systems Provides a clear and concise approach to the understanding and control of machine tool and workpiece vibrations from an alternative view, contributing to an in-depth understanding of cutting dynamics and robust control of machining instability Equips the reader with the knowledge to understand the dynamics of cutting and operation of machine-tool systems in different conditions as well as the concept of cutting instability control Includes data examples in MATLAB coding
