Abstract: This paper is structured into 5 chapters: Chapter 1 contains an introduction into the problem area and the aim of the thesis. Moreover, it gives a survey of the procedure to reach the target of extending and supporting several Conjoint Analysis methodologies to be able for an integration into the Quality Function Deployment approach with its huge amount of customer requirements (attributes and levels). Chapter 2 shows the integration of Conjoint Analysis and Quality Function Deployment into the Total Quality Management concept as quality improving, customer orientated (key word mass customization), and cost reducing tools. The importance to support Quality Function Deployment by Conjoint Analysis is pointed out to lead over to the main chapter of the paper. Chapter 3 is dedicated to several Conjoint Analysis models and the way in which to extend and support these methods, so that an integration into a large industrial study such as a Quality Function Deployment application can take place without any problems. To this purpose several conjoint techniques are described in detail, are extended by further techniques, and are compared to each other concerning their validity so that, finally, explicit recommendations can be given. The commercial use of Conjoint Analysis and the method transfer into several software-tools round off this chapter. Chapter 4 describes the Quality Function Deployment methodology in relation to the aim of this paper. The central subject is the House of Quality and its places where the Conjoint Analysis technique(s) can be applied. Results about the commercial use of several software-tools finish this chapter. It provides readers with the necessary intelligent tools for designing customer-oriented products in contexts characterized by incomplete information or insufficient data, where classical product design approaches cannot be applied. The respective chapters, written by prominent researchers, explain a wealth of both basic and advanced concepts including fuzzy QFD, fuzzy FMEA, the fuzzy Kano model, fuzzy axiomatic design, fuzzy heuristics-based design, conjoint analysis-based design, and many others. To foster reader comprehension, all chapters include relevant numerical examples or case studies. Taken together, they form an excellent reference guide for researchers, lecturers, and postgraduate students pursuing research on customer-oriented product design. Moreover, by extending all the main aspects of classical customer-oriented product design to its intelligent and fuzzy counterparts, the book presents a dynamic snapshot of the field that is expected to stimulate new directions, ideas, and developments.

Book excerpt: In today's highly competitive industrial climate, and in times of limited company resources and a continual need to improve company performance in all areas, the use of effective and efficient tools and development methodologies for research and development (R&D) is one interesting avenue to follow. Thus, the question is not really whether they should be deployed or not, but rather which methodologies and best-practices should be used, and why, when and how they should be deployed.Contemporary Quality Function Deployment for Product and Process Innovation: Towards Digital Transformation of Customer and Product Information in a New Knowledge-Based Approach introduces the reader to the industrial use of the Quality Function Development (QFD) methodology in product and process innovation. Customer, product, and production data related to each product family will be digitized in the matrix structures used in this methodology, and be made accessible, more transparent, and visible, thus facilitating a holistic product information perspective. Moreover, using this information in the creation of Integrated Knowledge Platforms (IKPs), supporting more digitalized product and process innovation work processes, will speed up product development and capture vital information to be used in your next-generation product innovation projects. From an overall company perspective, the well-proven ability of the QFD methodology to stimulate cross-functional product innovation will guide product innovation towards a new knowledge-based approach in its enhanced digital transformation and use of integrated customer, product, and production informationUsing the QFD methodology, you will learn how to create a retrievable and accumulated digitized company knowledge base, coupled with improved company communication. You will get better decision support, assisting in the development of better product specifications, and resulting in better products, and ultimately leading to improved customer satisfaction. The adoption of the QFD tool and matrices in building such well-structured knowledge-based platforms (IKPs) related to individual products or product families is the heart of the matter and the 'hidden gem' of QFD methodology use.The book aims to serve as a manual introducing the methodology and how to use it, offering a guiding framework, and being a handbook for the methodology's industrial use for both newcomers and product developers. Furthermore, it offers new perspectives on a more efficient and effective use of the QFD methodology for the seasoned practitioner. This book can also serve as a textbook for students in all disciplines of the natural sciences, innovation management, product design, and engineering. Each part of the book concludes with a number of questions that can be used as learning instruments in lecturing and for more advanced tutorials.

This book was released on 2024-04-29 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book puts management of product innovation in a corporate strategic perspective and argues that a company's competitive position is strongly related to an underlying unique and continually renewed product innovation work process, which drives innovation and delivery of new or improved products in the marketplace. The book will take the reader through a systematic examination of the necessary consecutive steps for companies' successful development of non-assembled products in the cluster of process industries. For readers in search of a seamless, easy-to-use, effective formal product innovation work process, from customer understanding to product launch, this book provides a guiding framework and 'hands-on' advice for work process design. A novel five-phase structural process model of the product innovation work process is initially introduced in order to orchestrate a more dynamic interaction between product and process innovation and the integration of sustainability and product eco-design in product design. The reader will learn first about the importance of aligning new product ideas with the corporate business model and product innovation strategy during the contextualization phase and then how to transform product ideas into well-defined complementary product and process concepts. In the movement of product ideas from the conceptualization phase to industrialization, the use of pilot-planting and production trials for scale-up of product and process concepts is further explored. To secure a design for processability, a novel industrialization sub-process is introduced, and the integration of complementary development of product and service offerings is further examined. The deployment of application development throughout and after product launch is highlighted for an enhancement of product commercialization and a reduction of 'time to break even' for new products.

Book excerpt: Especially in industrial countries the portion of elderly people is growing in many societies. Their needs are more intensified than the demands of younger people in many aspects. Companies need the right tools (e.g. market research methods for elderly people) to detect these needs, preferences, and demands of elderly people. Samah Abu-Assab verifies two existing research methods and suggests a new one for determining the preferences of elderly people. The new method seems to be promising and adequate for the elderly target group.

Book excerpt: New products that deliver added consumer value contribute significantly to the success of companies. In the numerous studies of new product performance over the years, consensus has developed that understanding consumer needs is of paramount strategic value, especially in the early stages of the product development process. During these early stages, the product has not yet been specified and the aim is to search for novel product ideas from a marketing and technological perspective. Industrial designers are increasingly challenged by the interdisciplinary nature, increasing complexity and time pressure in today's design projects. Understanding the product's environment, the user and incorporating all design aspects accurately places a great burden on the designer. The constant risk that the negligence of certain design aspects may result in inferior products, urges the need to use a systematic tool that would support the designer in creating useful, usable and satisfying products and also to assimilate and synthesize the Marketing function's VOC (Voice Of Customer) information. Traditional marketing thought and practice largely views new product development (NPD) as an internal firm-based activity in which customers are relatively passive buyers and user. This paradigm creates a 'gap' between the Marketing and Product Design functions. Conjoint Analysis technique, is an ideal tool, to bridge this 'divide' and help, develop customer focused, successful products.

Book excerpt: The need exists in the private sector and government manufacturing sites to reduce product development time, production lead times, inventory, and non-value added activities. At the same time, there is increased pressure to improve manufacturing process yields, produc tion efficiency, and resource utilization. Much of the technology required to meet these needs already exists, but an integrated structure that can demonstrate the potential for the technology in a concurrent engineering context does not. This book provides a road map for building the integrated technology environment to evaluate existing products, manufacturing processes and system design tools. This book details innovative approaches that will significantly improve design/manufacturing technology development and deploy ment capabilities for civilian and defense applications. These approaches are integrated product, process, and system design (IPPSD) initiatives which will greatly enhance the manufacturing competitiveness of the economy. These approaches involve the use of simulation, modeling tools and computerized virtual workstations in conjunction with a design environment which allows a diverse group of researchers, manufacturers, and suppliers to work within a comprehensive network of shared knowledge. The IPPSD infrastructure consists of virtual workstations, servers and a suite of simulation, quantitative, computa tional, analytical, experimental and qualitative tools. Such an IPPSD infrastructure will permit effective and efficient predictions of complete product design, manufacturing proces design, and customer satisfac tion.
