This book was released on 2020-11-12 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces advanced undergraduates to Riemannian geometry and mathematical general relativity. The overall strategy of the book is to explain the concept of curvature via the Jacobi equation which, through discussion of tidal forces, further helps motivate the Einstein field equations. After addressing concepts in geometry such as metrics, covariant differentiation, tensor calculus and curvature, the book explains the mathematical framework for both special and general relativity. Relativistic concepts discussed include (initial value formulation of) the Einstein equations, stress-energy tensor, Schwarzschild space-time, ADM mass and geodesic incompleteness. The concluding chapters of the book introduce the reader to geometric analysis: original results of the author and her undergraduate student collaborators illustrate how methods of analysis and differential equations are used in addressing questions from geometry and relativity. The book is mostly self-contained and the reader is only expected to have a solid foundation in multivariable and vector calculus and linear algebra. The material in this book was first developed for the 2013 summer program in geometric analysis at the Park City Math Institute, and was recently modified and expanded to reflect the author's experience of teaching mathematical general relativity to advanced undergraduates at Lewis & Clark College.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This established reference work continues to provide its readers with a gateway to some of the most interesting developments in contemporary geometry. It offers insight into a wide range of topics, including fundamental concepts of Riemannian geometry, such as geodesics, connections and curvature; the basic models and tools of geometric analysis, such as harmonic functions, forms, mappings, eigenvalues, the Dirac operator and the heat flow method; as well as the most important variational principles of theoretical physics, such as Yang-Mills, Ginzburg-Landau or the nonlinear sigma model of quantum field theory. The present volume connects all these topics in a systematic geometric framework. At the same time, it equips the reader with the working tools of the field and enables her or him to delve into geometric research. The 7th edition has been systematically reorganized and updated. Almost no page has been left unchanged. It also includes new material, for instance on symplectic geometry, as well as the Bishop-Gromov volume growth theorem which elucidates the geometric role of Ricci curvature. From the reviews:“This book provides a very readable introduction to Riemannian geometry and geometric analysis... With the vast development of the mathematical subject of geometric analysis, the present textbook is most welcome.” Mathematical Reviews “For readers familiar with the basics of differential geometry and some acquaintance with modern analysis, the book is reasonably self-contained. The book succeeds very well in laying out the foundations of modern Riemannian geometry and geometric analysis. It introduces a number of key techniques and provides a representative overview of the field.” Monatshefte für Mathematik

Book excerpt: This volume contains three expanded lecture notes from the program Scalar Curvature in Manifold Topology and Conformal Geometry that was held at the Institute for Mathematical Sciences from 1 November to 31 December 2014. The first chapter surveys the recent developments on the fourth-order equations with negative exponent from geometric points of view such as positive mass theorem and uniqueness results. The next chapter deals with the recent important progress on several conjectures such as the existence of non-flat smooth hyper-surfaces and Serrin's over-determined problem. And the final chapter induces a new technique to handle the equation with critical index and the sign change coefficient as well as the negative index term. These topics will be of interest to those studying conformal geometry and geometric partial differential equations. Contents:Lectures on the Fourth-Order Q Curvature Equation (Fengbo Hang and Paul C Yang)An Introduction to the Finite and Infinite Dimensional Reduction Methods (Manuel del Pino and Juncheng Wei)Einstein Constraint Equations on Riemannian Manifolds (Quôc Anh Ngô) Readership: Advanced undergraduates, graduate students and researchers interested in the study of conformal geometry and geometric partial differential equations.

Chapters deconstruct Brownian paths, diffusions in Euclidean space, intrinsic and extrinsic Riemannian geometry, Bocher's identity, and the bundle of orthonormal frames. Book excerpt: This book arose out of original research on the extension of well-established applications of complex numbers related to Euclidean geometry and to the space-time symmetry of two-dimensional Special Relativity. The system of hyperbolic numbers is extensively studied, and a plain exposition of space-time geometry and trigonometry is given. Commutative hypercomplex systems with four unities are studied and attention is drawn to their interesting properties.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book features plane curves—the simplest objects in differential geometry—to illustrate many deep and inspiring results in the field in an elementary and accessible way. After an introduction to the basic properties of plane curves, the authors introduce a number of complex and beautiful topics, including the rotation number (with a proof of the fundamental theorem of algebra), rotation index, Jordan curve theorem, isoperimetric inequality, convex curves, curves of constant width, and the four-vertex theorem. The last chapter connects the classical with the modern by giving an introduction to the curve-shortening flow that is based on original articles but requires a minimum of previous knowledge. Over 200 figures and more than 100 exercises illustrate the beauty of plane curves and test the reader's skills. Prerequisites are courses in standard one variable calculus and analytic geometry on the plane.

Learning this type of geometry is the first step in properly understanding questions regarding the structure of the universe, such as: What is the shape of the universe? What is a spacetime? What is the relation between gravity and curvature? Why exactly is time treated in a different manner than other spatial dimensions? Introduction to Lorentz Geometry: Curves and Surfaces intends to provide the reader with the minimum mathematical background needed to pursue these very interesting questions, by presenting the classical theory of curves and surfaces in both Euclidean and Lorentzian ambient spaces simultaneously. This book was released on 2020-10-19 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an elementary analytically inclined journey to a fundamental result of linear algebra: the Singular Value Decomposition (SVD). SVD is a workhorse in many applications of linear algebra to data science. Four important applications relevant to data science are considered throughout the book: determining the subspace that “best” approximates a given set (dimension reduction of a data set); finding the “best” lower rank approximation of a given matrix (compression and general approximation problems); the Moore-Penrose pseudo-inverse (relevant to solving least squares problems); and the orthogonal Procrustes problem (finding the orthogonal transformation that most closely transforms a given collection to a given configuration), as well as its orientation-preserving version. The point of view throughout is analytic. Readers are assumed to have had a rigorous introduction to sequences and continuity. These are generalized and applied to linear algebraic ideas. Along the way to the SVD, several important results relevant to a wide variety of fields (including random matrices and spectral graph theory) are explored: the Spectral Theorem; minimax characterizations of eigenvalues; and eigenvalue inequalities. By combining analytic and linear algebraic ideas, readers see seemingly disparate areas interacting in beautiful and applicable ways.
