Book excerpt: Curriculum Evaluation In Malaysia: Aspirations And Realities Curriculum evaluation is among the popular areas of research in education in Malaysia. This inaugural lecture book aims to compare the aspirations and realities of curriculum evaluation in the country. The aspirations are based on concepts and purposes of curriculum evaluation and guidelines provided by some popular curriculum evaluation models. On the other hand, the realities of curriculum evaluation in Malaysia are presented based on a review of 50 randomly sampled reports of curriculum evaluation. The review resulted in a summary of the current state of curriculum evaluation practices in Malaysia. The comparison of the aspirations and realities of the curriculum evaluation practices found a diversity of approaches and methods used; all studies have evaluative features; most of the evaluation findings are for specific implications to the programme evaluated; the terms ‘curriculum evaluation’, ‘programme evaluation’, and ‘curriculum research’ are used interchangeably; less than half of the reports did not involve the use of an evaluation model; a large proportion of curriculum evaluation in higher education projects focused on outcome-based education and entrepreneurship educati on; and only a handful of the evaluation projects were conducted by decision and policy makers at ministerial level. In the light of these findings, implications to policy makers and curriculum practitioners are discussed.

Book excerpt: In the tradition of The Ice Master and Endurance, here is the incrediblestory of the first truly modern explorer, whose death-defyingadventures and uncommon modesty make this book itself anextraordinary discovery. Hubert Wilkins was the most successfulexplorer in history no one saw with his own eyes more undiscoveredland and sea. Largely self-taught, Wilkins became a celebratednewsreel cameraman in the early 1900s, as well as a reporter, pilot, spy, war hero, scientist, and adventurer, capturing in his lens warand famine, cheating death repeatedly, meeting world leaders likeLenin and Stalin, and circling the globe on a zeppelin. Apprenticing with the greats of polar exploration, including Shackletonin the Antarctic, Wilkins recognized the importance of newtechnologies such as the airplane and submarine. He helped mapthe Canadian Arctic and plumbed the ocean depths from the icecap.A pioneer in the truest sense of the word, he became the firstman to fly across the North Pole, which won him a knighthood;the first to fly to the Antarctic and discover land there by airplane;and the first to take a submarine under the Arctic ice. Grasping thelink between the poles and changing global weather, Wilkins was avisionary in weather forecasting and the study of global warming.A true hero of the earth, he changed the way we look at our world.

Book excerpt: Asia has undergone rapid transformation over the past several decades as many countries have embraced new technologies and the processes of globalisation. Over this period the inflow of foreign capital into the region, the level of trade amongst these countries, and trade with other parts of the world has increased substantially. The ensuing economic growth has led to some significant changes in labour markets and the demand for skilled employees and their deployment within organisations. Focusing on a number of developed and developing Asian economies, this book explores the dynamics of workforce development and skill formation, and considers questions of both skills shortages and skills gaps. The book assesses the current state of training in the selected Asian economies, the weaknesses and strengths of their various training approaches, and what the present state of training means for the future economic development of these economies.

This book was released on 2013-07-19 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses how teaching and research have been weighted differently in academia in 18 countries and one region, Hong Kong SAR, based on an international comparative study entitled the Changing Academic Profession (CAP). It addresses these issues using empirical evidence, the CAP data. Specifically, the focus is on how teaching and research are defined in each higher education system, how teaching and research are preferred and conducted by academics, and how academics are rewarded by their institution. Since the establishment of Berlin University in 1810, there has been controversy on teaching and research as the primary functions of universities and academics. The controversy increased when Johns Hopkins University was established in 1876 with only graduate programs, and more recently with the release of the Carnegie Foundation report Scholarship Reconsidered by Ernest L. Boyer in 1990. Since the publication of Scholarship Reconsidered in 1990, higher education scholars and policymakers began to pay attention to the details of teaching and research activities, a kind of ‘black box’ because only individual academics know how they conduct teaching and research in their own contexts.

Book excerpt: 'Because of the insights offered the book under review should be compulsory reading for Ministers of Education and educational planners as well as for students of educational reform. They would find it readable, informative and disturbing. This could well become a classic account of why innovations fail. - Keith Watson, Department of Education Studies and Management, University of Reading Educational investment is now back at the top of the development agenda. The World Conference on Education for All confirmed the commitment of national governments and donors to provide opportunities for all children to enrol in school and reach minimum levels of achievement. This book takes a new look at the problems that confront politicians, planners, curriculum developers and teachers in implementing educational innovations in developing countries. The insights into theory and practice that emerge provide the intellectual yeast for the development of effective innovation strategies for the next decade.
