Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication of the papers presented at the Workshop on Laparoscopic Colorectal Surgery that took place on 27-29 November 1995 in the European Surgical Institute in Norderstedt, Germany, is effectively a snapshot of the current state of knowledge in both the theory and the practice of minimally invasive colon surgery. This snapshot is a mosaic made up of the varied ex periences of individual surgeons. After a long period in which nothing much seemed to be happening, the recent growth in the use of minimally invasive surgery or video-controlled operative procedures in surgery of the abdominal and chest cavities has been unparalleled. More difficult operations have become increasingly possible as more and more new techniques have become available. Cholecystectomy should be regarded as the pacesetter for video-controlled procedures. Under defined conditions, it has now become the standard operation. Other operative procedures such as appendicectomy, hernior rhaphy, overs ewing of a perforated gastric or duodenal ulcer, vagotomy and fundoplication, operations on the spleen or adrenal, staging operations., and thoracic surgical procedures are becoming increasingly widely performed. Minimally invasive operations on the small and large bowel are currently still at the stage of individual reports.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides simplified principles of surgical anatomy for colorectal cancers with sophisticated drawings, standard laparoscopic procedures with striking photographs and illustrations, and advanced procedures such as lateral pelvic node dissection and “down to top” or “reverse” total mesorectal excision. Oncological safety as well as minimum invasiveness of laparoscopic surgery for colorectal cancer has been acknowledged worldwide, based on long-term outcomes of several randomized controlled trials comparing laparoscopic surgery and open surgery. Developments in optical devices have provided us with a magnified clear vision of fine anatomical structures, facilitating our understanding of surgical anatomy and surgical procedures have been refined and improved accordingly. All these topics are presented in this book—valuable for surgical residents and experts eager to learn more about laparoscopic colorectal surgery—and readers will be enlightened by a new paradigm for “lap-enhanced surgical anatomy”. Therefore this volume will greatly benefit not only colorectal surgeons but also general surgeons as well as gastroenterologists and oncologists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique guide describes colorectal surgery procedures using medical terminology and anatomical terms originating from embryology. In the last decade, laparoscopic procedures in gastrointestinal surgery have been enhanced and their safety has significantly improved. With the number of cases of colorectal cancer surgery increasing and laparoscopic surgery no longer considered a specialized surgery, the recognition of the correct anatomy is vital in these procedures. Unfortunately, however, the understanding of clinical anatomy is frequently separate from that of basic surgical concepts. Initially, the dissecting layer should be presumed to derive from the fascial anatomy based on embryological recognition. Furthermore, the techniques currently being used by surgeons should be described in sufficient detail and the appropriate anatomical terms should always be used. In view of this, this valuable monograph benefits gastrointestinal surgeons and general surgeons who are involved in the treatment of colorectal cancer.

Book excerpt: This book is designed specifically to help equip new surgeons with the anatomical and technical knowledge to supplement hands on experience in minimally invasive colon and rectal surgery. There are multiple colorectal surgeries which distinctly lend themselves to the use of the laparoscopic approach. To assist the junior surgeon who is embarking on a career in surgery, expert surgeons and educators in the field of colon and rectal surgery from around the country authored the chapters included in this book. Chapters describe key elements of each surgery, including the order of surgery, when and how the surgeon created tension, rotated the patient, and optimized flow of the surgery. Chapters also contain tips and pitfalls that are not always explicitly presented when describing a surgical approach in order to provide readers with a diverse toolkit. Each chapter is also full of new illustrations that show the direction of traction, the line of dissection, and the anatomy of the colon. The illustrations also present tools in a color-coded format to clearly distinguish between the surgeon’s and the assistant’s tools. Laparoscopic Colectomy: A Step by Step Guide is a valuable resource to residents and junior attendings who wish to master laparoscopic colon and rectal surgery.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Single-access laparoscopic surgery (SALS), performed using a single transumbilical access, has recently proved to bring advantages over other forms of laparoscopic surgery due to the reduction in the number of incisions and the consequent decrease in morbidity, less blood loss and postoperative pain. Furthermore, cosmesis may be improved because incision within the umbilicus renders surgery virtually scarless. Nevertheless, as with all new surgical concepts, questions may be raised regarding safety, usefulness and appropriateness. This book analyzes the use of SALS for different indications and abdominal surgical procedures based on a careful literature review of the experience of the most important surgical teams employing this approach and also the authors’ personal observations. The coverage is broad, encompassing, for example, the role of SALS in appendectomy, repair of abdominal wall defects, cholecystectomy, gastric surgery, nephrectomy, splenectomy, hemicolectomy and pancreatic, liver and gynecological surgery.
