A New York Times, USA Today, Wall Street Journal, and Publishers Weekly Bestseller “Poignant, engrossing.”—People • “Lisa Wingate takes an almost unthinkable chapter in our nation’s history and weaves a tale of enduring power.”—Paula McLain Memphis, 1939. Twelve-year-old Rill Foss and her four younger siblings live a magical life aboard their family’s Mississippi River shantyboat. But when their father must rush their mother to the hospital one stormy night, Rill is left in charge—until strangers arrive in force. Wrenched from all that is familiar and thrown into a Tennessee Children’s Home Society orphanage, the Foss children are assured that they will soon be returned to their parents—but they quickly realize the dark truth. At the mercy of the facility’s cruel director, Rill fights to keep her sisters and brother together in a world of danger and uncertainty. Aiken, South Carolina, present day. Born into wealth and privilege, Avery Stafford seems to have it all: a successful career as a federal prosecutor, a handsome fiancé, and a lavish wedding on the horizon. But when Avery returns home to help her father weather a health crisis, a chance encounter leaves her with uncomfortable questions and compels her to take a journey through her family’s long-hidden history, on a path that will ultimately lead either to devastation or to redemption. Based on one of America’s most notorious real-life scandals—in which Georgia Tann, director of a Memphis-based adoption organization, kidnapped and sold poor children to wealthy families all over the country—Lisa Wingate’s riveting, wrenching, and ultimately uplifting tale reminds us how, even though the paths we take can lead to many places, the heart never forgets where we belong. Publishers Weekly’s #3 Longest-Running Bestseller of 2017 • Winner of the Southern Book Prize • If All Arkansas Read the Same Book Selection This edition includes a new essay by the author about shantyboat life.

Their attraction cannot be denied, but something stands in their way. Thomas is a drafted soldier, about to be sent to Europe to fight in the dreaded World War I. Although Juliette begs for them to be married before he goes to boot camp, he doesn't want to leave her a widow. Their letters will keep them close. Letters are all they will have until he returns from the battlefield-hopefully, alive. For the next four years, letters arrive from far off France and Germany to Juliette's front porch in Alabama. For the next four years, their love grows, develops, and increases. Even so, war is a dark force, and many men never return. Will Thomas be one of the soldiers lost, or will he come home and make Juliette's dreams of marriage a happy reality.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Isaiah 64:8 says, "But now, O Lord, thou art our father, and we are the clay, and thou the potter, and we are the work of thy hand." Life can be difficult and take us on unexpected paths. The paths can lead to tough circumstances and dark places of uncertainty. At times, we think our troubles will never end. This book has my personal life story of my struggles to overcome the dark spaces in my life by letting God's love light my path. My faith in God's promises, my coming to Jesus, and prayer has helped me through many difficult times. My mother wrote her childhood memories for me when she was in her eighties, and I interviewed her for more information. She was born in 1910. Then I asked my daughter, Annette, to write about her over fifty-year journey with type 1 diabetes. My grandson, Randy, suddenly became ill in his senior year and was told he had mental illness but was given a wrong diagnosis and medication. His story is included plus his mother's writing regarding his illness on a notebook. There are poems and other stories. The book has 160 photos. It has taken me many hours to put this book together, but if it helps one person, it will be a blessing. God will never forsake you. He will put together your broken vessel. Psalms 31:12 says, "I am forgotten as a dead man out of mind. I am like a broken vessel." And Psalms 147:3 says, "He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds." This is a book of hope that God compelled me to write, and even though I am ninety-one, due to a recent visual impairment, I had to hold a magnifying glass so I could see when typing the words.

Book excerpt: Colicky horses, trucks high-centered in pastures, late nights spent in barns birthing calves--the trials and tribulations of farm and ranch life are as central to its experience as amber waves of grain and Sunday dinners at the ranch house. Ankle High and Knee Deep collects together essays about lessons learned by ranch women, cowgirls, and farmers about what they’ve learned while standing in or stepping out of “mud, manure, and other offal” in their day to day lives on the land. This collection of entertaining and inspirational voices offers unique perspectives on relationships, loss, love, marriage, and parenting and other universal issues. These are contemporary accounts of women struggling to keep a lifestyle intact, recollections of childhoods spent in open spaces, and tales of overcoming obstacles--inspirational reading for city dwellers and country folk, alike.
