Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Curing Cancer & Heart Disease Proven Ways to Combat Aging, Atherosclerosis & Cancer The present book has taken many years of dedicated work, backed up by a lifetime of high achievement. It is likely to help a great many people take charge of their health by improving their diet, losing weight, quitting smoking, moderating alcohol consumption, exercising, relaxing more, and tailoring their diet and adding appropriate supplements to tackle aging, atherosclerosis, and cancer. The diet and exercise plans are, of course, only examples, as are the extensive diet supplementation plans, and, at the outset at least, readers should focus on their primary health concern and then study the measures needed to deal with it. This comprehensive book includes: Heart disease & cancer explained. A unified theory of heart disease. Diet do's and don'ts. Quitting smoking. Red wine's healthy procyanidins. Detailed diet & exercise plans. Diet analysis. Losing weight. The 10% fat calories diet to minimize risk of cancer & heart disease. Antioxidants to reduce combat aging, atherosclerosis, and cancer. Diet supplements to normalize cholesterol & homocysteine levels. Key mineral supplements, for example magnesium for variant angina. Megadosage, perhaps IV, retinoids and vitamins C & B17 to cure cancer. An unsolicited comment on part of this important work: "I have read your treatise on heart disease. It's genius. I am adopting it straight away." Dr Geoff Mohr, BE, MEngSc, PhD(Cambridge) wrote circa 60 papers for 20 journals. He has published 3 books: a trailblazing book on Finite Element Method (FEM) and PCs (1984), a major treatise on FEM (1992) widely considered "a megawork" and still used today, and recently The Pretentious Persuaders: A Brief History & Science of Mass Persuasion, on which industry comment has included: "A huge topic that must surely interest many people," "Some provocative and timely issues," and "A Theory of Everything." One eminent person called Geoff: "The greatest scientist in Australia."

This book was released on 2017-04-25 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cancer, dementia, and cardiovascular disease are responsible for almost two million deaths each year in the United States alone and represent the largest immediate threat to humanity. Over the last century, we have made spectacular advances that have transformed our society – splitting the atom, space travel, telecommunications, and the Internet – but with medical research focused mostly on science for the sake of science, it has yielded precious few cures. A Roadmap for Curing Cancer, Alzheimer’s, and Cardiovascular Disease represents a "first of its kind" effort to address both the reasons for this and to posit solutions to fix our broken system, in an effort to finally end this cure crisis. Dr. Marangos draws on 45 years of experience in every aspect of the biomedical R&D field, from basic drug discovery research at the NIH to the co-founding of five drug companies. He has published 252 research papers and edited four books on drug discovery, is co-inventor on 14 patents, and founded "The Journal of Molecular Neuroscience". He argues that from a development perspective, the regulatory, patent, and legal hurdles that force industry to pursue so-called "me-too" drugs rather than cures for terminal diseases must be re-thought. Leadership accountability, strategy, focus, and urgency need to be re-evaluated, and major reforms to the NIH, FDA, and patent codes are proposed.to remedy these impediments to cures. Written for anyone frustrated with the seemingly endless threat of terminal disease, this book seeks to inform, energize, and provide the rationale for the public and industry stakeholders, as well as clinicians and researchers, to resurrect the physician-patient relationship and demand that we get serious about ridding society of this scourge on humanity. This work contains the views and opinions of the author and are in no way intended to harm the reputation of any person, agency, organization, or commercial entity discussed herein. www.cureterminaldisease.com First comprehensive analysis of the failures in curing cancer, Alzheimer’s, and cardiovascular disease with solutions proposed Defines deficiencies in academic life science research, including conflicting incentives, QA/QC issues, and how to fix them Provides a rationale for FDA reform especially as it relates to terminal disease drugs Details how a reformed NIH, regulators, and industry can partner to form a NASA-type effort to speed cures of terminal diseases Provides the first detailed roadmap for life science researchers to conquer terminal disease

Book excerpt: While much progress has been made on achieving the Millenium Development Goals over the last decade, the number and complexity of global health challenges has persisted. Growing forces for globalization have increased the interconnectedness of the world and our interdependency on other countries, economies, and cultures. Monumental growth in international travel and trade have brought improved access to goods and services for many, but also carry ongoing and ever-present threats of zoonotic spillover and infectious disease outbreaks that threaten all. Global Health and the Future Role of the United States identifies global health priorities in light of current and emerging world threats. This report assesses the current global health landscape and how challenges, actions, and players have evolved over the last decade across a wide range of issues, and provides recommendations on how to increase responsiveness, coordination, and efficiency â€" both within the U.S. government and across the global health field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cardio-oncology is a medical subspecialty concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and organ failure mediated by micro- to macro-circulation defects in cancer patients and survivors. The risk of CVD in cancer survivors is eight times higher than the general population, and the relative risk of coronary artery disease and heart failure (HF) is 10 times and 15 times higher, respectively, compared to their siblings without cancer. It is important to note that cancer treatments including chemotherapy and radiation can lead to both short- (< 1 year) and long-term (> 5 years) cardiovascular complications. Previously, Dr. Edward T.H. Yeh initiated the MD Anderson Practice (MAP) project, and published 16 MAPs to provide the current best practice we considered at UT MD Anderson. As shown in these MAPs, one of the key issues of cardio-oncology practice and science is how we can allow cancer patients to receive maximum and uninterrupted treatments for cancer while protecting them from cancer therapy-mediated cardiovascular complications. Therefore, it is crucial to understand not only pathophysiology of CVD, but also mechanistic insights of how each cancer treatment can control cancer growth and metastasis. Without having the profound knowledge in the pathophysiological, clinical and epidemiologic aspects of cardiovascular complications of existing cancer therapy, it is impossible to establish the strong evidence-based strategies and approaches for both short- and long-term cardiovascular complications after cancer treatment. In addition, we believe that cardio-oncology science should not be restricted to deal with the side effects of each specific cancer drug, because many common cardiovascular phenotypes among the different cancer treatments are also observed. This Research Topic provides a comprehensive overview from both of the current research and practice, and a platform for obtaining the logical and up-to-date treatment and prevention of CVD in cancer patients and survivors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This proposed text is designed to provide a useful and comprehensive resource and state-of-the-art overview to readers about vascular damage potentially induced by antineoplastic drugs. Thanks to more and more effective antineoplastic treatments the survival of cancer patients is enormously increasing, but at the same time it is increasing the burden of related cardiovascular complications that affect morbidity and mortality. On this basis a new branch of cardiology has been developed, that is Cardio-Oncology. The aim is to prevent cardiovascular complications related to cancer therapy and to facilitate and avoid interruption of antineoplastic drugs due to the occurrence of cardiovascular damage. An increasing attention has been given to cardiac damage, while, until today, vascular complications have been poorly evaluated. The aim of this book is to focus on vascular complications related to cancer treatment, to guide the clinician at facing, during his every day practice, cardiovascular toxicity in cancer and hematologic patients. The proposed sections of the book have been structured to review the molecular mechanisms underlying vascular damage induced by new and old treatments, to describe the various manifestations of vascular disease that may range from artery to venous disease (including coronary artery disease, peripheral arterial disease, venous thromboembolism and pulmonary hypertension), and to provide advice to monitor patients undergoing onco-hematologic treatments in order to prevent and eventually manage vascular damage. This book will address resident and fellow physicians, medical oncologists, cardiologists, general practitioners and all those who take care of these patients. All invited authors will be recognized experts in their field, and leading international researchers on these topics. The editor has worked with these expert colleagues on a variety of other projects. The authors will provide their manuscript according to current literature and clinical research studies. The book does not seek to duplicate or replace other current resources. Rather, it will create a comprehensive yet concise resource on this emerging topic that is not adequately covered by any current literature.

Book excerpt: This concise and handy manual provides straightforward, up-to-date guidance for cardiologists and other practitioners on the management of cancer patients with cardiac problems, whether they be due to the cancer itself or to antineoplastic treatment. Detailed attention is devoted to the various forms of cardiotoxicity associated with chemotherapy and radiotherapy. The drugs commonly responsible for each toxicity are identified and clear advice is offered on monitoring techniques and treatment approaches. In addition, the issue of cardiotoxicity due to cancer treatment in particular patient groups – children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing cardiac disease – is addressed separately, with guidance on when and how antineoplastic (and/or cardiological) treatments should be modified. Further sections describe the correct responses to cardiac problems secondary to the cancer itself, including thromboembolic disorders and electrolyte imbalances, and the diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up of cardiac tumors. A closing section considers how to improve cooperation between oncologists, cardiologists, and general practitioners to ensure that cancer patients’ cardiovascular needs are met in a multidisciplinary approach.

Book excerpt: The possibility of getting a cardiovascular disease or cancer increases with advancing age. At the same time, relevant improvements in cancer therapy have resulted in the improvement of quality of life and the increasement of the survival rate of such patients. As a result we have larger number of patients that experience the cardiac side effects of chemotherapy. The extent of cardiotoxicity is variable, depending on the type of drug used, combination with other drugs, prior mediastinal radiotherapy and the presence of cardiovascular risk factors or history of heart disease. Early detection of the patients proneness for developing cardiotoxicity is the key issue to decrease morbidity and mortality. It also facilitates more tailored therapeutic interventions. Therefore, the collaboration and interaction of cardiology and oncology may contribute to reducing the cardiovascular adverse effects and improving the results in the treatment of patients with cancer.
