Book excerpt: A model of cumulative creep-fatigue damage has been developed which is based on the use of damage curve equations to describe the evolution of creep-fatigue damage for four basic creep-fatigue cycle types. These cycle types correspond to the four fundamental cycles of the StrainRange Partitioning Life Prediction approach of Manson, Halford, and Hirschberg. A concept referred to as Damage Coupling is introduced to analytically account for the differences in the nature of the damage introduced by each cycle type. For application of this model, the cumulative creep-fatigue damage behavior of Type 316 stainless steel at 816°C has been experimentally established for the two-level loading cases involving fatigue and creep-fatigue, in various permutations. The tests were conducted such that the lower life (high strain) cycling was applied first, for a controlled number of cycles, and the higher life (lower strain) cycling was conducted at the second level, to failure. The proposed model correlated the majority of the observed cumulative creep-fatigue data.

Book excerpt: A recently developed cumulative creep-fatigue damage model is applied to the prediction of thermomechanical and isothermal cumulative creep-fatigue loading histories. The model utilizes damage curve expressions to describe cumulative damage evolution under creep-fatigue conditions, qualitatively grouped according to dominant damage mechanism or mode. The damage coupling concept of McGaw is employed to describe the cumulative interaction among different mechanisms and modes. In this study, experiments consisting of two-level loadings of thermomechanical fatigue (both in-phase and out-of-phase) followed by isothermal fatigue to failure, were conducted on 316 stainless steel. It was found that the model gave good predictions for the out-of-phase two-level tests and provided reasonable bounds for the in-phase two-level tests.

Book excerpt: The global energy consumption is increasing and together with global warming from greenhouse gas emission, create the need for more environmental friendly energy production processes. Higher efficiency of biomass power plants can be achieved by increasing temperature and pressure in the boiler section and this would increase the generation of electricity along with the reduction in emission of greenhouse gases e.g. CO2. The power generation must also be flexible to be able to follow the demands of the energy market, this results in a need for cyclic operating conditions with alternating output and multiple start-ups and shut-downs. Because of the demands of flexibility, higher temperature and higher pressure in the boiler section of future biomass power plants, the demands on improved mechanical properties of the materials of these components are also increased. Properties like creep strength, thermomechanical fatigue resistance and high temperature corrosion resistance are critical for materials used in the next generation biomass power plants. Austenitic stainless steels are known to possess such good high temperature properties and are relatively cheap compared to the nickel-base alloys, which are already operating at high temperature cyclic conditions in other applications. The behaviour of austenitic stainless steels during these widened operating conditions are not yet fully understood. The aim of this licentiate thesis is to increase the knowledge of the mechanical behaviour at high temperature cyclic conditions for austenitic stainless steels. This is done by the use of thermomechanical fatigue- and creepfatigue testing at elevated temperatures. For safety reasons, the effect of prolonged service degradation is investigated by pre-ageing before mechanical testing. Microscopy is used to investigate the microstructural development and resulting damage behaviour of the austenitic stainless steels after testing. The results show that creep-fatigue interaction damage, creep damage and oxidation assisted cracking are present at high temperature cyclic conditions. In addition, simulated service degradation resulted in a detrimental embrittling effect due to the deterioration by the microstructural evolution.

Book excerpt: Austenitic stainless steels are often used for high-temperature applications under conditions where fatigue loading occurs in combination with varying temperatures, superimposed mean stresses or dwell times and environmental effects. In order to characterize and separate the various damage contributions on the deformation behavior and the damage evolution of AISI304L, isothermal and thermomechanical fatigue tests were carried out at temperatures ranging from room temperature to 800°C. The test results in combination with microstructural observations were used for an adaption and application of a simple multi-component model to predict the stress-strain response under thermomechanical fatigue conditions solely from isothermal data. A very reasonable predictive accuracy was obtained and the cyclic stress-strain calculation was directly incorporated in fatigue life assessment models. Two models, which were found to be suitable for isothermal fatigue conditions, are presented. These models were extended and applied to non-isothermal conditions. A comparison of the experimentally observed fatigue life data with the predicted values revealed that thermomechanical fatigue life can reasonably be assessed from isothermal test results, if environmental effects are correctly taken into account. Thermomechanical fatigue tests employing dwell periods indicate that the life prediction models developed are robust and conservative.

Book excerpt: Creep and strain controlled low-cycle fatigue tests with an imposed hold time at maximum tensile strain were carried out, mainly at 600°C, on two heats of 316L stainless steel. Very long times to failure (? 104 h) corresponding to low applied strain and long dwell period (24 h) were investigated. Both fatigue and creep damage were measured by quantitative metallography.

Book excerpt: The present work aims at engineers and scientists in the field of computational mechanics of materials. The objective of this work is to develop a suitable constitutive law and apply it to study effects of cyclic loading and geometry on the fatigue assessment. Firstly, a systematical investigation on the mechanic behaviors of an austenitic stainless steel is carried out. Different multiaxial fatigue life prediction models are studied to assess fatigue damage. The Karim-Ohno kinematic hardening model is extended to incorporate more complex mechanical behaviors. The proposed constitutive model is implemented into FEM code ABAQUS. Finally a computational fatigue analysis methodology is proposed for performing life prediction of notched components based on elastic-plastic computation.

More recently, attempts have been made to predict the damage evolution in engineering materials due to combined creep and fatigue loading, but these formulations have been strictly empirical and have not been used successfully outside of a narrow set of conditions. This work proposes a new creep-fatigue crack growth model based on constitutive creep equations (adjusted to experimental data) and Paris law fatigue crack growth. Predictions from this model are compared to experimental data in two steels: modified 9Cr-1Mo steel and AISI 316L stainless steel.

Book excerpt: This book provides an overview of state-of-the-art research on “Systems and Optimization Aspects of Smart Grid Challenges.” The authors have compiled and integrated different aspects of applied systems optimization research to smart grids, and also describe some of its critical challenges and requirements. The promise of a smarter electricity grid could significantly change how consumers use and pay for their electrical power, and could fundamentally reshape the current Industry. Gaining increasing interest and acceptance, Smart Grid technologies combine power generation and delivery systems with advanced communication systems to help save energy, reduce energy costs and improve reliability. Taken together, these technologies support new approaches for load balancing and power distribution, allowing optimal runtime power routing and cost management. Such unprecedented capabilities, however, also present a set of new problems and challenges at the technical and regulatory levels that must be addressed by Industry and the Research Community.

Book excerpt: Strain-controlled continuous fatigue and creep-fatigue experiments are reported for two types of 316 steel tested at 600°C (1112°F). It is shown that, although the continuous fatigue properties of the two materials are very similar, the one containing a controlled amount of nitrogen exhibits a better creep-fatigue resistance than the other alloy. Detailed measurements of intergranular damage made either on the fracture surfaces or in the bulk of creep-fatigue specimens indicate that the susceptibility of the materials to the effect of tensile hold times can be related to their propensity to intergranular cracking. A stress relaxation-propagation reduction factor per cycle correlation is proposed in order to account for the detrimental effect of tensile hold times on the fatigue life. This correlation relies upon experimental results on austenitic stainless steels published in the literature. It is shown that the proposed approach, derived largely from the quantitative measurement of intergranular damage, holds some promise for predictive purposes.
