Like the very successful first edition published in 1997, and the updated version published in 2001, this 14th revised and updated edition of Dealing with the Dutch focuses on Dutch values and norms, but it also takes into account the economic, social and cultural changes the Netherlands is undergoing. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It used to be widely accepted amongst anthropologists that when they conducted fieldwork with foreign cultures they experienced something called ‘culture shock.’ This book will argue that ‘culture shock’ is a useful model for understanding an important part of human experience. However, in its most widely-known form, the stage model, ‘culture shock’ has been heavily influenced by the same anti-science, latter-day religiosity that has become so influential more broadly: Multiculturalism. This book will examine culture shock through the model of ‘religion.’ It will show how the most well-known model of culture shock – so popular amongst business consultants, expatriates, international students and travelers – has become a means of promoting and sustaining this replacement religion which includes everything from dogmatism and fervour to conversion experience. By so doing, it will aim both to better understand culture shock and to show how it can still be useful, if divorced from its implicitly religious dimensions, to broadly scientific scholars. It will also suggest how anthropology itself might be stripped of its ideological infiltration and returned to the realm of science.

Book excerpt: A entertaining account of a two-years in the Netherlands that doubles as an insightful guide to moving country "It is not 'a piece of cake' to move to another country, but - though undoubtedly culture shock struck many a time - Norean approached her new home with openness and enthusiasm and put the same dedication she had previously put into her career...into making herself at home in the Netherlands. Her adventures are an entertaining and enlightening read. So, if you are wondering where to start, we suggest you pick up this little book and find out that with a real-life husband, family and household, life in a new country might be a challenge, but also an adventure - that will leave you changed forever, but also more complete."--The Xpat Journal (Netherlands) An overachiever, Norean was a woman trying to sustain the modern woman's American dream - to have a career, be a wife and mother, and somehow remain sane. Then, unexpectedly, her husband was offered an overseas assignment.... Living with the Dutch is part memoir, part guide to the culture and people of The Netherlands, part advice to anyone contemplating moving country with a family. This book is a charming account of Norean's travels and experiences during her two-year stay in The Hague, and chronicles her personal growth as she gains a new perspective on life. The reader follows her family from the chaotic move overseas, to surviving Dutch neighbors, weather, traffic, cooking and much more!

People from all corners of the world involved in government, business and culture come into contact with the Dutch and are often frustrated by their directness, their critical attitude, and their sometimes slow decision-making processes. This handy volume helps you to understand these characteristics and highlights the many good attributes of the Dutch as well, too. For example, they may drive a hard bargain, but once agreement has been reached, their word is their bond. As in previous editions, this updated version of Dealing with the Dutch focuses on Dutch values and norms, but also takes into account the economic, social and cultural changes that the Netherlands is undergoing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Netherlands is home to one million citizens with roots in the former colonies Indonesia, Suriname and the Antilles. Entitlement to Dutch citizenship, pre-migration acculturation in Dutch language and culture as well as a strong rhetorical argument ('We are here because you were there') were strong assets of the first generation. This 'postcolonial bonus' indeed facilitated their integration. In the process, the initial distance to mainstream Dutch culture diminished. Postwar Dutch society went through serious transformations. Its once lily white population now includes two million non-Western migrants and the past decade witnessed heated debates about multiculturalism. The most important debates about the postcolonial migrant communities centeracknowledgmentgement and the inclusion of colonialism and its legacies in the national memorial culture. This resulted in state-sponsored gestures, ranging from financial compensation to monuments. The ensemble of such gestures reflect a guilt-ridden and inconsistent attempt to 'do justice' to the colonial past and to Dutch citizens with colonial roots. Postcolonial Netherlands is the first scholarly monograph to address these themes in an internationally comparative framework. Upon its publication in the Netherlands (2010) the book elicited much praise, but also serious objections to some of the author's theses, such as his prediction about the diminishing relevance of postcolonial roots"--Publisher's description.

Running the gamut from the Randstad to the Dutch Golden Age, from William of Orange to Anne Frank, this volume uses a series of vignettes written by academic experts in their fields to address historical and contemporary topics such as immigration, tolerance, and the struggle against water, as well as issues of culture - painting, literature, architecture, and design among them. All chapters are written by academic experts in their fields who have extensive experience in explaining the many features of Dutchness to a foreign audience. Each chapter comes to life in vignettes that illustrate characteristic historical figures or essential aspects in Dutch culture and society from William of Orange and Anne Frank to Dutch cheese and the inevitable coffeeshop.

Book excerpt: The Netherlands has been one of the world's most distinctive and sophisticated football cultures. From the birth of Total Football in the sixties, through two decades of World Cup near misses to the exiles who remade clubs like AC Milan, Barcelona, Arsenal and Chelsea in their own image, the Dutch have often been dazzlingly original and influential. The elements of their style (exquisite skills, adventurous attacking tactics, a unique blend of individual creativity and teamwork, weird patterns of self-destruction) reflect and embody the country's culture and history. This book lays bare the elegant, fractured soul of the Dutch Masters and the culture that spawned them by exploring and analysing its key ideas, institutions, personalities and history in the context of wider Dutch society.
