Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book should be of particular interest to all who, through the nature of their research, are required to maintain cultures of micro-organisms and other cells in a healthy and stable state. It is based on papers and discussion at the Specialists' Conference on Culture Collections, Ottawa, Canada, August 1962, sponsored by the Canadian Committee on Culture Collections of Micro-organisms. This first international Specialists' Conference was organized with several aims. It was hoped that a discussion of the role of culture collections would make clear their importance in science and in industry. Secondly, a consideration of the organization of collections was planned not only to aid workers actively concerned with culture collections but also to give administrators a clear pictures of organizational problems. Thirdly, it was hoped to make an examination of the fundamental and technical aspects of the reservation of micro-organisms and other cells, with special emphasis on the maintenance of physiological, morphological and genetic characteristics. The speakers of the Conference strove to elucidate what is known of the subject-matter, and also to draw attention to areas of ignorance, with the hope of stimulating research in these areas. The symposium speakers included authorities from many countries: J.F. Morgan (Canada); R. Wahl (France); H.P.R. Seeliger (Germany); T. Nei (Japan); A.L. van Beverwijk. T.O. Wikén (the Netherlands); B.L. Brady, S.T. Cowan, E.A. George, H. Proom, J.M. Shewan, R.E.O. Williams (United Kingdoms); S.G. Bradley, D.H. Braendle, W.E. Brown, R.E. Buchanan, W.A. Clark, R. Donovick, R.E. Gordon, W.C. Haynes, R.J. Heckly, N.D. Levine, P. Mazur, K.B. Raper, E.G. Simmons, E.O. Stapley, M.P. Starr, R.C. Starr, R.E. Stevenson, C.S. Stulberg, R.L. Thompson (U.S.A.); and N.A. Krasilnikov (U.S.S.R.). In addition to the symposium papers, eight research communications are presented.

Book excerpt: The Fungi: An Advanced Treatise, Volume III: The Fungal Population attempts to relate fungi to their environment as symbionts, saprobes, and parasites. This book discusses the effects of the interaction of fungi with their environment, and the summation of these effects as reflected in the geographical distribution and number of fungi is described. Organized into eight parts encompassing 27 chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the ecology of fungi. This text then examines the taxonomy, morphology, and physiology of freshwater fungi. Other chapters consider the ecology of marine, saprobic fungi that falls into three categories, namely, ecological distribution, geographical distribution, and occurrence and habitat. This book discusses as well the characteristics and temperature ranges for growth of each of the known species of thermophilic fungi. The final chapter deals with the importance of the major characteristics of fungi. This book is a valuable resource for mycologists, botanists, paleobotanists, and taxonomists.

As it is the present volume includes information about the various groups of microorganisms, their cell walls, and their genetics. Data on amino acids, carbohydrates, and lipids re included, together with diagrams of metabolic pathways and information on immunocompetent cells. General reference data include a glossary, statistical tables and other information that is hoped to be found useful by the reader.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inhibition and Destruction of the Microbial Cell focuses on the effects of various classes of toxic chemical agents on microbial cell. This book is organized into 14 chapters that cover the topics from two points of view: the agent and the target (the microbial cell). The introductory chapters are devoted to the inhibitory effects of elevating temperature and to the lethal effect of environmental thermal energy supply restriction on growing bacteria. A chapter focuses on the effect of various classes of antibacterial compounds, such as 4-amino-quinaldinium and 8-hydroxyquinoline derivatives, chlorhexidine, amidines, halogens, dyes, and nitrofurans. The subsequent chapters examine the effects of other chemical agents on microorganisms, including toxic gases, solutes, ions, and radiations. The book goes on examining the inhibition and destruction of specific microorganisms, such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Enterobacteriaceae, Mycobacteria, Cocci, bacterial spores, molds, yeasts, and viruses. The last chapter discusses the effect of the cultural prehistory of microorganisms upon their response to inhibition and destruction. This book is an invaluable resource for graduate research workers and scientists in pure and applied microbiology. This will also be a good reference for undergraduates reading specialized courses at honors level in microbiology or applied courses in food science and agriculture. Furthermore, it will be of interest to the medical profession, especially those involved in public health and pathology, as well as to scientists in the pharmaceutical industry.
