Download or read book Teche written by Shane K. Bernard and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2016-11-03 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recipient of a 2017 Book of the Year Award presented by the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities Shane K. Bernard's Teche examines this legendary waterway of the American Deep South. Bernard delves into the bayou's geologic formation as a vestige of the Mississippi and Red Rivers, its prehistoric Native American occupation, and its colonial settlement by French, Spanish, and, eventually, Anglo-American pioneers. He surveys the coming of indigo, cotton, and sugar; steam-powered sugar mills and riverboats; and the brutal institution of slavery. He also examines the impact of the Civil War on the Teche, depicting the running battles up and down the bayou and the sporadic gunboat duels, when ironclads clashed in the narrow confines of the dark, sluggish river. Describing the misery of the postbellum era, Bernard reveals how epic floods, yellow fever, racial violence, and widespread poverty disrupted the lives of those who resided under the sprawling, moss-draped live oaks lining the Teche's banks. Further, he chronicles the slow decline of the bayou, as the coming of the railroad, automobiles, and highways reduced its value as a means of travel. Finally, he considers modern efforts to redesign the Teche using dams, locks, levees, and other water-control measures. He examines the recent push to clean and revitalize the bayou after years of desecration by litter, pollutants, and invasive species. Illustrated with historic images and numerous maps, this book will be required reading for anyone seeking the colorful history of Louisiana and the Gulf Coast. As a bonus, the second part of the book describes Bernard's own canoe journey down the Teche's 125-mile course. This modern personal account from the field reveals the current state of the bayou and the remarkable people who still live along its banks.

Book excerpt: This report presents the results of cultural resources survey, inventory, and assessment of two proposed disposal areas located along the west bank of Bayou DuLarge in Terrebonne Parish, Louisiana. Fieldwork was performed by R. Christopher Goodwin & Associates, Inc., in June 1997. Proposed Disposal Site 1 measured 30.48 m (100 ft) by 850 m (2788.71 ft), and encompassed an area of 6.4 ac (2.59 ha). Proposed Disposal Site 2 measured 30.48 m (100 fi) by 900 m (2952.76 ft), encompassing an area of 6.78 ac (2.74 ha). Both of the proposed disposal sites are located on the west bank of Bayou DuLarge, and these sites are located 13.6 km (8.5 mi) and 15.2 km (9.5 mi) south of Theriot, Louisiana respectively. The entire area of both proposed disposal sites was surveyed systematically using both shovel and auger testing. In addition, the bankline along Bayou DuLarge was surveyed. No cultural resources (archeological loci or historic standing structures) were identified as a result of this survey, and therefore, no additional testing of the proposed disposal site areas is recommended.

(ESI), for two dredged I material disposal areas, totalling approximately 500 acres, of the Mississippi River Gulf Outlet in St. Bernard Parish. Dredged material is scheduled to be deposited in Sites 18 and 18a in an attempt to nourish and recreate the marsh environment. A portion of Site 18 was surveyed using systematic shovel tests to locate cultural resources. The remainder of Site 18 and all of Site 18a were accessed by airboat, and auger tests were judgmentally placed in the marsh. A visual inspection of all exposed banklines was also conducted. No cultural remains were encountered during survey of Disposal Sites 18 and 18a. No historic or prehistoric archeological sites will be impacted by the planned dredge disposal. No standing structures are present in the survey area. No further work is recommended.

This book was released on 1998 with total page 55 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study presents the results of a cultural resources survey conducted by Coastal Environments, Inc., (CEl) of two segments of the proposed right-of-way (ROW) for drainage improvements along Jones Creek and its tributaries in East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana. The improvements are part of a larger project undertaken by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), New Orleans District, in cooperation with the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development, Office of Public Works, the City of Baton Rouge, and East Baton Rouge Parish to construct drainage improvements in the Amite River and Tributaries, East Baton Rouge Parish Watershed Flood Control Project. The areas selected for study are located near two previously reported prehistoric archaeological sites: l6EBRl3 and 16EBR26. The project area for l6EBRl3 encompassed approximately 4.6 acres and that for 16EBR26 encompassed approximately 6.6 acres. Fieldwork for this project, consisting of an intensive pedestrian survey that included shovel tests and auger borings, was conducted by a three-person team. No significant standing structures were located in the project area. No archaeological remains were encountered, and no further work is necessary.
