Book excerpt: This document presents the results of the Phase I cultural resources survey and archeological inventory of the proposed Bayou Sorrel Lock Replacement Project (Contract No. DACW29-97-D-0018) in Iberville Parish, Louisiana. This investigation was completed on behalf of U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New Orleans District, by R. Christopher Goodwin & Associates, Inc., in September and October of 1999. As part of the cultural resources component associated with this undertaking, an archeological inventory was authorized to assess three separate tracts within the Area of Potential Effect; these totaled 144.4 ha (356.8 ac) in size. Each of the three project items was assessed as having a high probability for containing intact cultural deposits by archeologists on staff with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New Orleans District. Fieldwork for this project consisted of pedestrian survey augmented by systematic shovel testing throughout the Area of Potential Effect. This investigation resulted in the identification and subsequent assessment of four standing structures (24-896, 24-897, 24-898, and 24-899). In addition, previously recorded Site 16IV23 fell within the limits of the overall Area of Potential Effect and it was revisited as part of this investigation. The site, which had been situated on a natural levee between an unnamed creek and the Lower Grand River, has been destroyed by prior borrow activities associated with the construction of the East Atchafalaya Basin Protection Levee. On the basis of this intensive cultural resources investigation, four standing structures and one previously recorded archeological site were identified. None of the cultural resources identified within the Area of Potential Effect associated with the Bayou Sorrel Lock Replacement Project possess the qualities of significance as defined by the National Register of Historic Places criteria for evaluation (36 CFR 60.4 A-D). No additional testing of these three project items is recommendc.

Book excerpt: Cultural resources investigations have been conducted in relation to the proposed Cross Basin Channel Realignments Project, Atchafalaya Basin, Louisiana. The project areas include the Old Atchafalaya Area (Sts. Martin and Landry Parishes) the East Freshwater Distribution Channel Area (Iberville and St. Martin Parish), and the West Access Channel Area (St. Martin Parish). This report presents (1) an overview of the region's geology, (2) a review of the previous cultural resources investigations undertaken in the study region and a listing of all known archeological sites in the area, (3) an historical overview with additional emphasis placed on the history of navigation in the study region, and (4) a summary of the field investigations conducted within the project areas, and (5) a summary of the resource potential for each construction locale. The historical overview reveals that the Atchafalaya Basin interior, in which these construction areas are located, was the scene of economic development since the early nineteenth century. It also notes the dependence that was, and still is, placed on watercraft transportation within the Basin. Historical and cartographic research, also, has established that the West Access Channel Area is located in the northern portion of the now-abandoned Bayou Chene community.

Book excerpt: These sites have been employed to characterize the archeological resource base within the project area. Analysis of present and future land use, based upon past and predicted clearance of forested land within the project area, permits assessments of the nature and extent of impacts to the archeological resource base from project induced land clearance. Site distributions among the geomorphological strata have been predicted based on a general model of prehistoric use of the the alluvial floodplain. The predicted and observed distributions permit discussions of man-land relationships within the project area. Previously recorded site locations were used to permit further assessments of these predicted relationships. Keywords: Prehistoric and historic archeology; Sampling.

(ESI), for two dredged I material disposal areas, totalling approximately 500 acres, of the Mississippi River Gulf Outlet in St. Bernard Parish. Dredged material is scheduled to be deposited in Sites 18 and 18a in an attempt to nourish and recreate the marsh environment. A portion of Site 18 was surveyed using systematic shovel tests to locate cultural resources. The remainder of Site 18 and all of Site 18a were accessed by airboat, and auger tests were judgmentally placed in the marsh. A visual inspection of all exposed banklines was also conducted. No cultural remains were encountered during survey of Disposal Sites 18 and 18a. No historic or prehistoric archeological sites will be impacted by the planned dredge disposal. No standing structures are present in the survey area. No further work is recommended.

Primary source documents including historic maps, aerial photographs, historic accounts, photographic collections were examined in order to identify areas where cultural resources were likely to be preserved within the study area, which encompassed 181 acres. A systematic program of shovel testing, augering, probing, magnetometer survey, metal detector survey, and canal wire drag was then undertaken in high probability areas. No new sites were identified as a result of this effort. In addition, three previously-recorded sites, 16JE127, 16JE128, and 16JE129, were investigated. Site boundaries were determined, in situ cultural deposits were identified, and areas of disturbance were delineated. 16JE127 is recommended as being ineligible for nomination to the NRHP. Both 16JE128 and 16JE129 are recommended as being eligible for NRIIP nomination. (MM).

Book excerpt: This study discusses cultural resources investigations relating to two proposed construction areas, the Homeplace and Tropical Bend borrow pits, located north of Empire, Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana. This work is a part of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New Orleans District, New Orleans to Venice Hurricane Protection Project. Records reviews and historical investigations were conducted prior to an intensive archaeological survey being initiated in both locales. The survey did not locate any significant cultural resources within either area. Only one occupational locale, a Euro-American site of too recent an age to be assigned a site designated by the Louisiana Division of Archaeology, was found within the proposed Homeplace borrow pit.

Book excerpt: This report documents the second phase of the cultural resources inventory of the Bonnet Carre' Spillway, St. Charles Parish, Louisiana. Investigations conducted during this project focused on the portion of the spillway north of U.S. Highway 61. Ten separate survey items were examined during these investigations. Three items, representing high probability areas for historic cultural resources, were examined by intensive pedestrian survey and shovel testing. Two survey items, representing high probability areas for prehistoric remains, were examined by deep auger testing. The remaining five items, representing Previously disturbed areas or areas presently suffering disturbance, were examined through boat-based inspection of exposed banklines along these features. No archeological sites or significant historic resources were located during these investigations. The reported locations of three previously recorded sites near the project area, 16 SC 10, 16 SC 11, and 16 SC 12, were visited. Two of these sites, 16 SC 12, could not be relocated. (FR).

This book was released on 1990 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In May and August of 1988 a cultural resources investigation was conducted. It related to a proposed 261.7 ac borrow pit, which is to be excavated south of Fort Jackson, Plaquemines Parish, Louisiana. This work is a part of the New Orleans to Venice Hurricane Protection Project. Preliminary archival and historical investigations undertaken prior to the field survey indicated that there was a low probability of archeological or historic sites existing within the limits of proposed construction. This was verified by the survey. A research design is also presented for four additional Corps of Engineers construction projects scheduled to be undertaken in this vicinity. This research design is derived from historical, archival, and cartographic investigations and combined with information obtained from local collectors in an attempt to predict the types of cultural resources that could be expected to exist within each construction locale. This report presents recommendation concerning the field procedures for locating archeological sites or feature in these areas and assessing their significance in terms of National Register eligibility.
