Book Synopsis Navigating Deep River by : Mark W. Dennis
Download or read book Navigating Deep River written by Mark W. Dennis and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2020-04-01 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Navigating Deep River, Mark W. Dennis and Darren J. N. Middleton have curated a wide-ranging discussion of Shūsaku Endō's final novel, Deep River, in which four careworn Japanese tourists journey to India's holy Ganges in search of spiritual as well as existential renewal. Navigating Deep River evaluates and probes Endō's decades-long search to find the words to explain Transcendent Mystery, the difficult tension between faith and doubt, the purpose of spiritual journeys, and the challenges posed by the reality of religious pluralism in an increasingly diverse world. The contributors, including Van C. Gessel who translated Deep River into English in 1994, offer an engaged and patient exploration of this major text in world fiction, and this anthology promises to deepen academic appreciation for Endō, within and beyond the West.

Book excerpt: Once dismissed as a fading genre with little to say to contemporary audiences, the giant monster movie roared back to life in the new millennium. In one of modern cinema's most surprising turnarounds, a wave of 21st-century kaiju films has delivered exciting and thought-provoking viewing to global audiences. In a variety of works that range from action-packed CGI spectacles to more personal, introspective productions commenting on real-world issues of the day, the new millennium has witnessed some of the most intriguing films in any genre, including movies from such acclaimed directors such as Guillermo del Toro, Bong Joon-ho and Peter Jackson. This book takes a sober, multidimensional look at the new class of giant monster movies. It examines the making of these films and their sometimes-obscure meanings. It also covers efforts to reinvent storied kaiju characters from the past, including Godzilla and King Kong, and to transform the genre with movies such as Cloverfield, The Mist, Colossal, and Pacific Rim that feature all-new creatures.

Book Synopsis Zion Earth Zen Sky by : Charles Inouye
Download or read book Zion Earth Zen Sky written by Charles Inouye and published by . This book was released on 2021-09-15 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I am Japanese but was born and raised in rural central Utah. At ?rst, my parents were afraid that our involvement with the Church would weaken our grounding in Japanese tradition. As it turned out, it only reinforced my interest in animism, Buddhism, and other aspects of Japanese culture. As a scholar of Japanese culture, I have discovered that Latter-day Saint culture and Mahayana Buddhist culture are similar in many ways, and that the paths to the building up of Zion, on the one hand, and to Zen enlightenment, on the other, are one and the same. The genius of both faith traditions lies in how they push the abstract ideas of salvation down into the world of material practice. Raking sand in a Zen garden reminds us that mortality is similarly a "high maintenance" situation, where constant service is required if we are to grasp our purpose here on earth.

Book Synopsis A Christian Critique of Art and Literature by : Calvin Seerveld
Download or read book A Christian Critique of Art and Literature written by Calvin Seerveld and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2019-09-23 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The value of these lectures lies in their call to a joyful task still unfinished. The kind of Christian culture involvement that Seerveld provokes and inspires remains an ongoing mandate: to entrust even our aesthetic lives to Christ. Seerveld's capricious and creative intellect expresses itself with an exuberant flair. His insights in these Christian Critiques are unapologetically Christian. He approaches are and literature from his experience in philosophy. One advantage if this perspective is that Seerveld avoids the pernicious idolizing of the arts endemic in much modern western culture, while he still asserts the inalienable value of artistic and literary behavior.
