L’antropologia del Novecento si costituisce attraverso gli studi sul campo di antropologi «mitici» come Bronisław Malinowski tra i nativi del Pacifico occidentale, Margaret Mead tra le adolescenti a Samoa o Claude Lévi-Strauss in Amazzonia. La contemporaneità viene affrontata sulla base delle teorie postcoloniali e delle riflessioni, tra gli altri, di Arjun Appadurai, Homi Bhabha, Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak sul ruolo dell’Occidente e sull’emergere di nuovi assetti geopolitici. Infine, si pone particolare attenzione alle teorie legate al genere, a partire dagli studi pioneristici di Gayle Rubin e dalle proteste femministe e della comunità gay nei tardi anni sessanta e settanta fino ad oggi.
