Book excerpt: Dominant patriarchal ideologies about gender in the contemporary western context perpetuate gender inequality and gender-based violence. specifically the dominant ideology of masculinity maintains restrictive ways of being a man, which serve to sustain oppression of gender minorities, the insulting/limiting "boys will be boys" trope for men, and the pervasiveness of rape culture overall. Men who are uncomfortable with gender inequality and men's violence are not alone; however, the dominant ideology conditions men to believe that they are. This condition obstructs them from mobilizing for change. Therefore, in order to instigate change for both gender minorities marginalized and victimized by men's violence and for men restricted by the dominant ideology of manhood, men must be part of the conversation and activism of gender justice work. However, spaces that foster men's engagement are in the minority and do not have a widely known presence. I propose that spaces are needed for fostering subversive masculinity. This configuration is defined by advocates who consciously reject rape culture and who are actively forging paths that fly in the face of socially constructed and limiting masculinity. I hypothesized that the formally-structured men's support group program is the most effective strategy for fostering this configuration. Drawing on several theories, I first discuss why such spaces are needed. I then utilize data collected from interviews to describe the shape and emerging direction of the men's support group. I describe obstacles that have stalled and challenged these spaces. FInally, I present contemporary, emerging, and speculative spaces of men's engagement.

These obstacles may stem from directly or indirectly discriminatory norms or from entrenched socio-cultural practices, or both. This study analyses the gender dimension of agriculture-related legislation in a selection of different countries around the world, examining the legal status of women in three key areas: rights to land and other natural resources; rights of women agricultural workers; and rights concerning women's agricultural self-employment activities, ranging from women's status in rural cooperatives to their access to credit, training and extension services.
