For Abelia to Gymnocladus cultivars please download the updated PDF International Register of Ornamental Plant Cultivars: Woody Plants A - G from Fall 2018. This is the November 2017 register of all new ornamental or landscape tree, shrub, conifer, and vine cultivar submitted or registered in the Open Registration Of Cultivars (OROC)(pronounced OH-rock) from 2013 to late 2017. OROC was formed to remedy the lack of an worldwide catalog of new cultivars because existing patent, trademark, and ICRA agencies barely account for 5% of the available new material. By reason, patented plants are only those likely to be very popular or from larger firms who can pay the free, not collector's items, most university items, nor smaller nurseries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2013, the New Ornamentals Society (now Cultivar.org) set about to update it's extensive files on flowering maples or Abutilon. More than 110 cultivars were described. We expected the project to yield perhaps 200-300 cultivars and be finished in six months. It turns out that this genus was far more popular in modern times and a century ago than any of the researchers realized. After nearly two years, a descriptive checklists of 525 cultivars came together to the surprise of all involved. We dug even deeper and found new images from gardens and historical scans of old catalogs that sometimes had informative illustrations. This volume is, we believe, the most complete study of the garden varieties of Abutilon ever compiled and is the product of hundreds of hours of study and travel.

Written at a more detailed level than most field guides, it introduces basic taxonomic concepts and methods and explains the rationale behind taxonomic classification systems. Entries include Latin and common names for each species as well as physical descriptions at various levels of maturity and for different seasons. Also noted are regional and state distributions, soil conditions, cover types, shade tolerances, and common diseases and pests. This remarkably thorough and reliable reference includes: * Detailed descriptions of more than 800 species * Hundreds of additional varieties and cultivars * 550 exquisitely detailed line drawings of leaves, bark, fruit, and seeds * Broad coverage of commercial and noncommercial species * An emphasis on the silvical features of each species * A unique section on forest community ecology and cover types * The new North American Classification System Well-organized and practical, this authoritative guide is an immensely useful resource for foresters, wildlife and field biologists, naturalists, environmental scientists, and land managers.

Book excerpt: In this eloquent plea for compassion and respect for all species, journalist and gardener Nancy Lawson describes why and how to welcome wildlife to our backyards. Through engaging anecdotes and inspired advice, profiles of home gardeners throughout the country, and interviews with scientists and horticulturalists, Lawson applies the broader lessons of ecology to our own outdoor spaces. Detailed chapters address planting for wildlife by choosing native species; providing habitats that shelter baby animals, as well as birds, bees, and butterflies; creating safe zones in the garden; cohabiting with creatures often regarded as pests; letting nature be your garden designer; and encouraging natural processes and evolution in the garden. The Humane Gardener fills a unique niche in describing simple principles for both attracting wildlife and peacefully resolving conflicts with all the creatures that share our world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides complete, comprehensive, and broad subject-based reviews for students, teachers, researchers, policymakers, conservationists, and NGOs interested in the biodiversity and conservation of woody plants. Forests cover approximately 31 percent of the world’s total landmass; 93 percent is natural forest and only 7 percent consists of planted trees. Forest decline is progressing at an alarming rate worldwide. In addition to human activities (logging, deforestation, and exploiting forest lands for agriculture and industrial use), a number of other factors – including pests and diseases, drought, soil acidity, radiation, and ozone – are cumulatively contributing to global forest decline. The present situation forces us to focus on forest conservation strategies for the present and future. Gene conservation and maintaining genetic diversity in forest ecosystems are crucial to the preservation of forest genetic resources. This calls for integrated action to implement both the in situ (on site) preservation of forest stands and ex situ (distant from the original site) strategies for the conservation of woody plants’ genetic resources. Selected priority areas include: 1) assessing patterns of genetic diversity and threats, 2) understanding the biological processes regulating genetic diversity, 3) assessing the impact of human activities and climate change on genetic diversity, and 5) finding methods for prioritizing species and populations for the conservation of forest trees genetic resources. All chapters were written by leading scientists in their respective fields, which include: woody plant diversity, ecology and evolution; assessment of genetic diversity in forest tree populations; conservation planning under climate change; and in situ and ex situ strategies, including biotechnological approaches, for the conservation of woody plants genetic resources.
