Book excerpt: CSX Transportation Railroad Heritage is a photographic essay of this major railroad that was formed in 1980 by a merger of the Seaboard Coast Line with the Chessie System, providing a history that goes back to its beginning with the opening in 1830 of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad, which was the first common carrier railroad in the United States. An early predecessor railroad was the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway which introduced the figure of a sleeping kitten "Chessie" in 1933 that became a well-recognized advertisement for passenger service and later for freight service. Each of the railroads that were merged contributed to CSX reaching important population, energy, and manufacturing markets. The CSX Pride in Service program resulted in three special painted locomotives (shown in this book) honoring the nation's veterans, active military personnel, and first responders.

Book excerpt: Formed in 1980 as a holding company for the Chessie and Seaboard Systems and several other eastern railroads, CSX in 1986 merged these several companies into CSX Transportation, staking its claim as one of the nation's dominant merger roads. This illustrated history provides a background of CSX's 25 years on the American railroad scene, describing how the company came to swallow several legendary regional lines and merger roads. The book also examines CSX hardware, facilities, and operations on more than 20,000 miles of trackage throughout the eastern half of the United States, from 1980 through today. Included is an explanation of the 1999 agreement by which CSX and Norfolk Southern purchased and effectively split the operations of their northern rival Conrail. Marvelous color photography, of course, depicts CSX diesel-electric powered freight operations in eastern and Midwestern U.S. urban centers and rural areas.

But despite a late start, railroads forever transformed this beautiful region of the Sunshine State and connected its people to the outside world. In Railroads of Southwest Florida, the golden age of railroading is documented with captivating images of stations, machines, and the people whose lives were affected by this significant form of transportation. From interior views of well-furnished passenger cars to scenes of hardworking men who made it all possible, this collection provides a thorough look at a fascinating, almost forgotten heritage.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Great Northern Railway Through Time takes us on a tour of the American Northwest―the last American frontier―from St. Paul, Minnesota, to Seattle, Washington. The Great Northern opened up the Dakotas, Montana, Idaho, the dramatic Cascade Mountains of Washington and the Continental Divide at Marias Pass. President James J. Hill intended the Great Northern to be a freight hauling road, but tourists riding on the GN's premier passenger train, The Empire Builder were delighted by the prairie, the farmland, the Big Sky Country, the mountains, and Glacier National Park. The G.N.'s reputation grew. Today, Amtrak's Empire Builder traverses the same territory. The Great Northern Railway Through Time presents photos taken over the course of seventy five years by photographers of the era. The author has provided ample photo captions pointing out features that have changed over the years and features that have stayed the same. The early photos are fresh―never before published. The more recent shots were made by twenty of America's finest rail enthusiast photographers.

Surpassing waterways as the primary mode of transport, the "Iron Horse" linked practically every town and city, carried tourists and locals, and ably conveyed the wealth of Florida's mines, factories, forests, groves, and farms. Nearly 175 years later, railroads still remain a dependable source of transport within the Sunshine State.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of Oregon east of the Cascade Mountains is a raw and inhospitable land, largely the product of recent volcanic activity. Railroad builders constructed a couple mainlines skirting the edges of the region and some branch lines into agricultural communities, but found very little else to attract their interest. Over time, however, a small collection of interesting shortline railroads built or bought rail lines, either in conjunction with the developing timber industry in the Blue, Ochoco, and Wallowa mountains or to connect a few existing communities with the mainline that bypassed the town. This book tells the stories of these small railroads and the roles they played in the development and economies of the region; covered railroads includes the Big Creek & Telocaset; City of Prineville; Condon, Kinzua & Southern; Idaho, Northern & Pacific; Klamath Northern; Oregon & Northwestern; Oregon, California & Eastern; Oregon Eastern Division of the Wyoming/Colorado; Sumpter Valley; Union Railroad of Oregon; Wallowa Union; and others.

Now, with fewer railroad companies, fewer rail lines and fewer (but longer) trains, the "romance of the rails" may be fading. However, memories of railways and railroad heritage are preserved in a number ways. Photographs by the author show examples of the ways that railroad history, culture and "romance" are recalled. This book, RAILROAD HERITAGE: MUSEUMS, RELICS AND SPECIAL EVENTS, has 147 pages with 320 color and 34 black & white photographs.

Today few people who walk, run, or bike the 41-mile Pinellas Trail realize the importance of this path as they travel through Pinellas County railroad history. Railroading in Pinellas County transports the reader through 100 years. History is brought to life through photographs of the individuals who brought to Pinellas the railroad, railroad stations, railroad engines, passenger and freight cars, railroad companies, employees, and industries such as tourism that utilized this form of transportation. These photographs were culled with the assistance and permission of local historical societies, county and state archives, and various private collections.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rich in very diverse railroad history CSX Transportation (CSXT) is the largest eastern railroad and also one of the safest in the country. CSXT is the end result of over 150 years of railroad evolution in the United States. The largest part of CSXT consists of elements of the Chessie System and the Seaboard Coast Lines. Dozens of "fallen flag" lines such as the Baltimore & Ohio, Chesapeake & Ohio, Western Maryland, Atlantic Coast Line, Richmond, Fredericksburg, and Potomac, Family Line, s and many more make up the modern CSXT.CSXT's rail spans the United States east of the Mississippi exclusive of New England. The northern portion, the Chessie system heritage serves the industrial northeast and the coal fields of Maryland, West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Kentucky. The southern section, from the SCL, handles minerals, chemicals and ocean ports. The building blocks of CSXT are the history, roadbed, and hard work of hundreds of predecessor roads, from the very beginning of flanged wheel on iron rail in America. From a 50 year old SW1200 workhorse switching cars in a yard, to mile-long unit coal trains headed by 15,000 horsepower of modern AC traction, CSXT never sleeps. CSXT uses locomotives from major United State's manufacturers General Electric (GE) and Electromotive Division (EMD), as well as new-comer NRE. The CSXT fleet of locomotives at the end of 2018 numbered around 4,000 locomotives. As this book was being prepared, CSX has 3873 units on its roster, with 800 being stored. That gives some 13,225,000 raw horsepower available. This is a data book, not a color picture book, to keep costs down. There are numerous websites and books with nice color pictures of CSX locomotives mentioned in the Reference and Resources sections.
