Book Synopsis Self-Determination by : Donald Clark
Download or read book Self-Determination written by Donald Clark and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-27 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a significant contribution to the worldwide discussion of political self-determination as a source of socio-cultural and political hope, conflict and confusion. Inspired by Martin Ennals, long the quietly visionary Director-General of Amnesty International, the book consists of cases and penetratingly definitive analyses, culminating in trenchant recommendations for action by world bodies. With self-determination intensely at issue so widely, from the former Yugoslavia to Kashmir to Quebec, this distinguished book by a global group of experts is particularly timely.

Book Synopsis Aspects of Extradition Law by : Geoff Gilbert
Download or read book Aspects of Extradition Law written by Geoff Gilbert and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2022-07-04 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines those aspects of the law of extradition which reveal conflicts between different legal systems and where there is a need for an improvement in procedures, either in the interest of mutual legal assistance or for the better protection of the fugitive. The book starts from the assumption that, unless otherwise stated, the principles applied by domestic courts are of universal applicability. Such a broad generalisation is not guaranteed to be right in every circumstance, but it concentrates the study on extradition law itself, rather than on the various national interpretations of domestic extradition laws. The law is stated in accordance with the materials available at 1 December 1990. Most extradition agreements tend to focus on those matters which form the basis for this book. Throughout the discussion of these matters it will be noticed that there is a tension between extradition law as part of a process of mutual assistance by states in the area of criminal justice, and extradition law as a means of protecting the fugitives' rights and freedoms. Dr Geoff Gilbert is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Law and a member of the Human Rights Centre at the University of Essex. Within the H.C.R., he teaches International Criminal Law on the LL.M. in International Human Rights.

Download or read book Environmental and Human Security in the Arctic written by Gunhild Hoogensen Gjørv and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-08 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first comprehensive exploration of why human security is relevant to the Arctic and what achieving it can mean, covering the areas of health of the environment, identity of peoples, supply of traditional foods, community health, economic opportunities, and political stability. The traditional definition of security has already been actively employed in the Arctic region for decades, particularly in relation to natural resource sovereignty issues, but how and why should the human aspect be introduced? What can this region teach us about human security in the wider world? The book reviews the potential threats to security, putting them in an analytical framework and indicating a clear path for solutions.Contributions come from natural, social and humanities scientists, hailing from Canada, Russia, Finland and Norway. Environmental Change and Human Security in the Arctic is an essential resource for policy-makers, community groups, researchers and students working in the field of human security, particularly for those in the Arctic regions.
Book Synopsis Minority Rights in Europe: Policies and Practices in CSCE Participating States by : Minority Rights Group
Download or read book Minority Rights in Europe: Policies and Practices in CSCE Participating States written by Minority Rights Group and published by Minority Rights Group. This book was released on 1991-06-30 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Conference focused on minority issues that have not yet, in our opinion, been solved satisfactorily. There are several open ends in the theoretical and pragmatic approaches that are currently discussed internationally: the content of collective minority rights that need elaboration after decades of focusing on individual human rights only; ways in which one can include rights for non-territorial minorities (e.g. migrants); and the role non-governmental organizations and independent researchers can play in a process that is still dominated by governmental (i.e. majority) bodies. Please note that the terminology in the fields of minority rights and indigenous peoples’ rights has changed over time. MRG strives to reflect these changes as well as respect the right to self-identification on the part of minorities and indigenous peoples. At the same time, after over 50 years’ work, we know that our archive is of considerable interest to activists and researchers. Therefore, we make available as much of our back catalogue as possible, while being aware that the language used may not reflect current thinking on these issues.
