Book excerpt: Thorp and Covich's Freshwater Invertebrates: Keys to Palaearctic Fauna, Fourth Edition, is part of a multivolume series covering inland water invertebrates of the world that began with Vol. I: Ecology and General Biology (2015), then Vol. II (2016) Keys to Nearctic Fauna, and finally in Vol. III (2018) Keys to Neotropical Hexapoda (insects and springtails). It now continues with identification keys for Palearctic invertebrates in Vol. IV. Two other volumes currently in development focus on general invertebrates of the Neotropical/Antarctic, and Australasian Bioregions. Other volumes in the early planning stages include Afrotropical and Oriental/Oceanic Bioregions. All volumes are designed for multiple uses and levels of expertise by professionals in universities, government agencies and private companies, as well as by graduate and undergraduate students. Provides identification keys for inland water (fresh to saline) invertebrates of the Palearctic Zoogeographic Region, from Iceland to Russia, and from the northern Pole region to Saharan Africa in the west, through the Middle East, and to the central China and Japan in the east Presents identification keys for aquatic invertebrates to the genus or species level for many groups and to family for Hexapoda, with the keys progressing from higher to lower taxonomic levels Includes a general introduction and sections on limitations, terminology and morphology, material preparation and preservation and references

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Crustacea Malacostraca; I Under occurrence are given the discoveries within the region definitely defined above for the purpose of this investigation; under distribution the localities outside this region. Both and especially the distribution have caused the author considerable practical difficulties and some remarks on this subject will for several reasons be of service. All the ingolf localities are mentioned under each species. On the other hand, it would take up far too much space to give all the localities for a number of common species living in shallow water, especially for a no small number of Decapoda; in such cases I have contented myself with summaries for each main section of the coasts. In many cases, however, it is a matter of opinion how much might be usefully included and the correctness of the view adopted may indeed always be combated; some will undoubtedly think that I give too many details, others perhaps that I give too few. While it is difficult enough sometimes to find a suitable mean with regard to how many details based on our own investigations should be given, it becomes still more difficult to determine how much should be noted of the data of other authors concerning the occurrence of any species within the region mentioned. Sometimes the inclusion of such data is superfluous as I myself have seen the species from the same and quite adjacent localities, yet the exclusion of a citation may sometimes be considered as due to lack of knowledge or a slight. In other cases these older data are of doubtful quality sometimes even the supposed data prove incorrect when the author's specimens are examined so that the question of their inclusion or omission becomes even more difficult. If I were to indicate all the earlier notices and in every little case of doubt give a criticism, I should certainly succeed in securing myself against the complaint mentioned, but it is very doubtful whether I should advance science by being so unnecessarily prolix. What I include of the literature therefore depends upon personal opinion, but I have endeavoured to give a correct and complete picture for each species. This book was released on 2013-10-24 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As evident from the number 4A tagged to this volume, vol. 4 as originally planned had to be split into two fascicles, 4A and 4B, simply because of the numbers of pages covered by the various contributions meant for volume 4. The present volume, then, comprises the fourth part in the series The Crustacea, i.e., the revised and updated texts from the Traité de Zoologie – Crustacea. The chapters in this book grew out of those in the French edition volume 7(II). The exception is chapter 49, which has been newly conceived; it was never published in French. Overall, this constitutes the sixth tome published in this English series, viz., preceded by volumes 1 (2004), 2 (2006), 9A (2010), 9B (2012), and 3 (2012). Readers/users should note that we have had to abandon publishing the chapters in the serial sequence as originally conceived by the late Prof. J. Forest, because the various contributions, i.e., both the updates and the entirely new chapters, have become available in a more or less random order. This fourth volume, part A, of The Crustacea contains chapters on: • Genetic variability in Crustacea • Class Cephalocarida • Class Remipedia • Subclass Hoplocarida: order Stomatopoda • Superorder Syncarida

Book excerpt: Ghost shrimp and mud shrimp in the decapod infraorder Thalassinidea are ecologically important members of many benthic intertidal and shallow subtidal infaunal communities, largely due to the sediment filtration and mixing that result from their burrowing and feeding behavior. These activities considerably modify their immediate environment and have made these cryptic animals extremely interesting to scientists in terms of their behavior, ecology, and classification. Over 20 years ago, seven species of thalassinideans were known from the South Atlantic Bight (Cape Hatteras, NC to Cape Canaveral, FL). During this study, the examination of extensive collections from the National Museum of Natural History (NMNH), the Southeastern Regional Taxonomic Center (SERTC), and regional institutions, resulted in the identification of 14 species of thalassinideans currently known to occur within this region. The family Axiidae is represented by three species: Axius armatus, Calaxius jenneri, and Paraxiopsis gracilimana; the Callianassidae by six: Biffarius biformis, B. cf. fragilis, Callichirus major, Cheramus marginatus, Gilvossius setimanus, and Necallianassa berylae; the Calocarididae by two: Calocaris templemani and Acanthaxius hirsutimanus; and the families Laomediidae, Thomassiniidae, and Upogebiidae are each represented by one: Naushonia crangonoides, Crosniera wennerae, and Upogebia affinis, respectively. An illustrated key is presented for species level identification and supplemental notes on the ecology, distribution, and taxonomy of the species are provided.
