Book excerpt: Due to particulates common in crumb rubber-modified asphalt binders, conventional PG grading using the Dynamic Shear Rheometer (DSR) with a gap height of 1.0 mm may not be valid and in accordance with current specifications. Asphalt binder testing and mixture testing was conducted on binders with and without crumb rubber modification to determine an asphalt binder test method which best matches the mixture performance. It was determined that the Multiple Stress Creep Recovery (MSCR) test, conducted with a gap height of 2.0 mm and at in-service temperatures, best correlated with Flow Number testing in the Asphalt Mixture Performance Tester (AMPT). This relationship was found to be better than that of the current DSR test procedure for high temperature PG grading.

Book excerpt: The application of crumb-rubber modifier (CRM) in asphalt mixtures has been proven to increase the viscosity of CRM binders. In recent years, warm mix asphalt (WMA) additives have been employed to CRM binders to lower their viscosity at high temperatures, allowing a decrease in the mixing and compaction temperatures. The objective of this research is to investigate the viscosity and storage stability of rubberized WMA binders with different tire rubber concentrations and WMA additives. The tire rubber of 40-mesh, with concentrations of 10 %, 15 %, 20 %, and 25 % by weight of a Superpave performance grade (PG) 64-22 asphalt binder, were used in this study along with the WMA additives, such as Sasobit, RH and Advera. Viscosity tests were conducted on the rubberized WMA binders using the rotational viscometer at four temperatures (135, 160, 177, and 190°C). The statistical analysis of variance (ANOVA) was applied to quantify the respective effects of the influencing factors on the CRM binder's viscosity. The test results indicated that the addition of crumb rubber could greatly increase the viscosity of asphalt binders, which could be improved continuously at increased crumb-rubber concentrations. However, when considering different WMA additives, the crumb rubber showed different effects on the viscosity of the binder. The three WMA additives could all reduce the viscosity of the CRM binder; in addition, RH had the most significant effect on viscosity reduction. It was also found that the CRM binders with WMA additives had good storage stability. For example, the viscosity of the CRM binder with 10 % rubber concentration and RH only increased by 3.8 % after being stored for 4.5 h.

Terminal and field blended asphalt rubbers have been developed through the wet process to incorporate crumb rubber into the asphalt binder. Warm mix asphalt technologies have been developed to curb the problem associated with the processing and production of such crumb rubber modified binders. Also the lowered production and compaction temperatures associated with warm mix additives suggests the possibility of moisture retention in the mix, which can lead to moisture damage. Conventional moisture sensitivity tests have not effectively discriminated good and poor mixes, due to the difficulty of simulating field moisture damage mechanisms. This study was carried out to investigate performance properties of crumb rubber modified asphalt concrete, using commercial warm mix asphalt technology. Commonly utilised asphalt mixtures in North America such as dense graded and stone mastic asphalt were used in this study. Uniaxial Cyclic Compression Testing (UCCT) was used to measure permanent deformation at high temperatures. Indirect Tensile Testing (IDT) was used to investigate low temperature performance. Moisture Induced Sensitivity Testing (MiST) was proposed to be an effective method for detecting the susceptibility of asphalt mixtures to moisture damage, as it incorporates major field stripping mechanisms. Sonnewarm(TM), Sasobit(TM) and Evotherm(TM) additives improved the resistance to permanent deformation of dense graded mixes at a loading rate of 0.5 percent by weight of the binder. Polymer modified mixtures showed superior resistance to permanent deformation compared to asphalt rubber in all mix types. Rediset(TM) WMX improves low temperature properties of dense graded mixes at 0.5 percent loading on the asphalt cement. Rediset LQ and Rediset WMX showed good anti stripping properties at 0.5 percent loading on the asphalt cement. The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Official's Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide (AASHTO MEPDG) software was used to predict long term low temperature performance of the mixtures in various areas of Ontario. Sasobit, Rediset LQ and Rediset WMX gave good 15 years prediction with stone mastic asphalt mixtures but the performance of dense graded mixtures was less satisfactory.
