Book excerpt: William Barclay is probably the greatest expositor of the New Testament in Britain today. Crucified and Crowned is a sequel to The Mind of Jesus and deals with the events of Holy Week leading to the Cross, the Resurrection and the Ascension. His method is to describe the events given in the Gospels, with frequent illuminating explanations from the Greek and from the social customs of the times, followed by exposition that is rich in its devotional and homiletic qualities . . . Here is the scholar and preacher at his best and he has given us a book that would make admirable reading for Holy Week, or any other time.' (Baptist Times). `This is a clear and authoritative biblical and theological discussion of the crucifixion journey, its tragedy and the triumph which follows in the resurrection and the ascension . . . William Barclay is one of the greatest Bible interpreters of our time, and this book is written with courage, wisdom and inspiration' (Congregational Monthly). Dr William Barclay, honoured now with the order. of Commander of the British Empire, is Professor of New Testament Language and Literature in the University of Glasgow.

Download or read book The Crucified Life written by A.W. Tozer and published by Baker Books. This book was released on 2011-09-09 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What Does it Mean to Be "Crucified With Christ?" During his lifetime, renowned teacher A.W. Tozer was often invited to speak at seminaries, churches, and Bible conferences on the topic of the cross and its meaning for the Christian life. Now, in this never-before-published distillation of his best teaching on the subject, you will gain a fresh understanding of the cross's centrality to your walk of faith in Christ. The apostle Paul declared in his letter to the Galatians that he had been "crucified with Christ." But what does this mean? Is this a claim every believer can and should make? The Crucified Life is a comprehensive examination of these questions, answered with the deep, biblical thinking for which Tozer was revered. "God is ingenious in developing crosses for His followers," Tozer was fond of saying. At the heart of this book, you will find a call to follow Christ to the cross and be raised to new life--a call to live the crucified life.

Book excerpt: The Cross and Crown is a religious poem by Thomas Day Curtis that touches upon themes of salvation, repent, morality and other Christian values. Excerpt: "Not idle was the Nazarene the while; He marshaled on the other side of life The hosts of gentle truth and reason mild, Swaying with love the heart of man and child To long for freedom and the rights that guile Had trampled down amid intolerant strife. The work was one of love, the progress slow, For hell contended every inch of ground, And, through the church, assaulted every thing That wrought for good, and cat-like watched to spring Upon whoever rose to strike a blow To break the chains with which men's souls were bound."
Book Synopsis The Crucified King by : Jeremy R. Treat
Download or read book The Crucified King written by Jeremy R. Treat and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2014-05-27 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The kingdom of God and the atonement are two of the most important themes in all of Scripture. Tragically, theologians have often either set the two at odds or focused on one to the complete neglect of the other. In The Crucified King, Jeremy Treat demonstrates that Scripture presents a mutually enriching relationship between the kingdom and atonement that draws significantly from the story of Israel and culminates in the crucifixion of Christ the king. As Israel’s messiah, he holds together the kingdom and the cross by bringing God’s reign on earth through his atoning death. The kingdom is the ultimate goal of the cross, and the cross is the means by which the kingdom comes. Jesus’ death is not the failure of his messianic ministry, nor simply the prelude to his royal glory, but is the apex of his kingdom mission. The cross is the throne from which he rules and establishes his kingdom. Using a holistic approach that brings together the insights of biblical and systematic theology, this book demonstrates not only that the kingdom and the cross are inseparable, but how they are integrated in Scripture and theology.

Download or read book Crucified written by J. Christopher Edwards and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on 2023-10-03 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historians of early Christianity unanimously agree that Jesus was executed by Roman soldiers. This consensus extends to members of the general population who have seen a Jesus movie or an Easter play and remember Roman soldiers hammering the nails. However, for early Christians, the detail that Jesus was crucified by Roman soldiers under the direction of a Roman governor threatened their desire for a stable existence in the Roman world. Beginning with the writings found in the New Testament, early Christians sought to rewrite their history and shift the blame for Jesus's crucifixion away from Pilate and his soldiers and onto Jews. During the second century, a narrative of the crucifixion with Jewish executioners predominated. During the fourth century, this narrative functioned to encourage anti-Judaism within the newly established Christian empire. Yet, in the modern world, there exists a significant degree of ignorance regarding the pervasiveness--or sometimes even the existence!--of the claim among ancient Christians that Jesus was executed by Jews. This ignorance is deeply problematic, because it leaves a gaping hole in our understanding of what for so long was the direct underpinning of Christian persecution of Jews. Moreover, it excuses from blame the venerated ancient Christian authors who constructed and perpetuated the claim that the Jews executed Jesus. And on an unconscious level, it may still influence Christians' understanding of Jews and Judaism.

Book Synopsis The Man Who Crucified Himself by : Maria Böhmer
Download or read book The Man Who Crucified Himself written by Maria Böhmer and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-11-01 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Man Who Crucified Himself is the history of a sensational nineteenth-century medical case. In 1805 a shoemaker called Mattio Lovat attempted to crucify himself in Venice. His act raised a furore, and the story spread across Europe. For the rest of the century Lovat’s case fuelled scientific and popular debates on medicine, madness, suicide and religion. Drawing on Italian, German, English and French sources, Maria Böhmer traces the multiple readings of the case and identifies various 'interpretive communities'. Her meticulously researched study sheds new light on Lovat’s case and offers fresh insights on the case narrative as a genre - both epistemic and literary.
