Book excerpt: Listed on the national register of historic places in 1973, Crown Hill cemetery has been a vital part of the Indianapolis community dating back to its first interment, Lucy Ann Seaton, on June 2, 1864. since then, Crown Hill has grown from a "rural cemetery" into the nation's third largest private cemetery and is a community treasure that serves a broad range of needs and stands as a monument to the memories of hundreds of famous Hoosiers and the thousands more who selected Crown Hill as their final resting place. Published by the Indiana Historical Society Press in cooperation with the Crown Hill Heritage Foundation, Crown Hill examines the cemetery's complete history and places its story in the larger historical context of the development and growth of american landscape architecture. In addition, the book includes vignettes of the famous families and individuals buried and/or entombed at Crown Hill and numerous photographs.

Many of the country's great leaders, soldiers, entrepreneurs, and artists are buried within the cemetery's confines including: President Benjamin Harrison, Col. Eli Lilly, and the infamous John Dillinger, to name just a few. Within these pages of vintage photographs, the history and beauty of Crown Hill Cemetery is revealed. Author W.C. Madden examines such structures as the inspiring Waiting Station and Gothic Chapel, both of which were built in the 1800s. He also details the ground's viscerahl history exemplified by the National Cemetery, dedicated to those who served our country, and the Confederate lot on the cemetery's south grounds.

Book excerpt: Two friends return home from the Korean War to find their world—and themselves—irrevocably altered in this novel hailed by Kurt Vonnegut as “gruesomely accurate and enchanting” and “wildly sexy” Willard “Sonny” Burns and Tom “Gunner” Casselman, Korean War vets and former classmates, reunite on the train ride home to Indianapolis. Despite their shared history, the two young men could not be more different: Sonny had been an introverted, bookish student, whereas Gunner had been the consummate Casanova and athlete—and a popular source of macho pride throughout the high school. Reunited by the pains of war, they go in search of finding love, rebuilding their lives, and shedding the repressive expectations of their families. As Sonny and Gunner seek their true passions, the stage is set for a wounded, gripping account of disillusionment and self-discovery as seen through the lens of the conservative Midwest in the summer of 1954. Rendered in honest prose, national bestseller Going All the Way expertly and astutely captures the joys and struggles of working-class Middle America, and the risks of challenging the status quo. Author Dan Wakefield crafts this enduring coming-of-age tale with fluidity, grace, and deep humanity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Seasons of Buffalo Baseball 1857-2020 is a collaborative efforts that draws from the 1985 book, The Seasons of Buffalo Baseball by Joseph M. Overfield. His son, Jim, updated and revised his dad's book into a richly illustrated, 400-page 8x10-inch book that updates the history of professional baseball in Buffalo through the 2020 season, which was cancelled for the Triple A Bisons because of the COVID-19 but includes a summary of the Toronto Blue Jays' home away from home in Buffalo during the summer because of the pandemic. That marked the return of major league baseball to Buffalo since the city had a franchise in the Federal League in 1905. Part One of the book is a year-by-year summary of each season from 1857 through 2020, complete with the team's manager, league, record, leading hitter, home run hitter and pitcher. Part Two is a collection of stories from Joe and Jim Overfield, Brian M. Frank and Michael J. Billoni, Assistant Editors of the book, along with Paul Langendorfer, Budd Bailey, Mike Harrington of the Buffalo News, Sal Maiorana of Rochester's Democrat and Chronicle and former WGRZ-TV sportscaster Jonah Javad, a sportscaster at WFAA-TV in Dallas, Texas. There are also cartoons illustrated by Mike "Ricig" Ricigliano and more than 200 black and white and color photos. The book honors the memory of Joe Overfield, the former historian of the Buffalo Bisons and a member of the Greater Buffalo and Buffalo Baseball Halls of Fame. It is also a tribute to the resilience of the City of Buffalo and that game that has been part of the city's fabric for more than 160 years. Among those who have written testimonials are John Thorn, official historian of Major League Baseball; Chris Berman, ESPN Sports Broadcaster; Bob Costas, multiple Emmy award-winning sports broadcaster; Ken Rosenthal, baseball writer for The Athletic and Fox Sports and Pete Weber, the Voice of the Nashville Preditors of the NHL and the former Voice of the Bisons and Greg Brown, the Voice of the Pittsburgh Pirates and the former Bisons broadcaster.
