Book excerpt: A TIME Magazine Best YA Book of All Time A Stonewall Honor Book A Reese's Book Club YA Pick Liz Lighty has always believed she's too black, too poor, too awkward to shine in her small, rich, prom-obsessed midwestern town. But it's okay -- Liz has a plan that will get her out of Campbell, Indiana, forever: attend the uber-elite Pennington College, play in their world-famous orchestra, and become a doctor. But when the financial aid she was counting on unexpectedly falls through, Liz's plans come crashing down . . . until she's reminded of her school's scholarship for prom king and queen. There's nothing Liz wants to do less than endure a gauntlet of social media trolls, catty competitors, and humiliating public events, but despite her devastating fear of the spotlight she's willing to do whatever it takes to get to Pennington. The only thing that makes it halfway bearable is the new girl in school, Mack. She's smart, funny, and just as much of an outsider as Liz. But Mack is also in the running for queen. Will falling for the competition keep Liz from her dreams . . . or make them come true?

Book excerpt: Revelation: A Fresh Perspective helps you manage the massive quantity of details in the Bibles book of Revelation. Without using grandiose theological mumbo-jumbo, the major contextual breakdowns of Revelation are identified, to provide a general overview, and then the details are added. This offers a platform to give a greater understanding of this most important message God has given us. This approach also gives the opportunity to tie together all the details and not leave any out. This method does not provide the opportunity to hurry through Revelation in an hour or two; it takes a few more hours than that, but it does not require a college course to accomplish. Sticking with a simple, basic approach to evaluate the words and details that are actually written for us gives us a much greater understanding of this vision than you may have ever imagined.

Book excerpt: "Precisely Literal, Richly Revealing" Pairing the most literal English translation available with an illuminating in-text exposition of each verse in the Bible, this outstanding resource will helps strengthen your grasp on God's Word. By comparing the precise NASB with the magnified sentence structure of the Amplified Bible, readers are better able to appreciate the meaning of the scriptures as understood by their audience in the original languages. Known for its word-for-word literal accuracy, the New American Standard Bible, updated edition, is the #1 choice for in-depth inductive Bible study. And through its unique use of synonyms and definitions, the Amplified Bible both explains and expands the meaning of words in the text by placing amplification in parentheses and brackets after key words or phrases. Through multiple expressions, greater emphasis is given to the divine message as reflected in the original Greek and Hebrew. Now readers can benefit from both translation approaches with this side-by-side comparison that offers a more enriching experience with God's Word. NASB 12--For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face; now I know in part, but then I will know fully just as I also have been fully known. 13--But now faith, hope, love, abide these three; but the greatest of these is love. AMPLIFED BIBLE 12--For now we are looking in a mirror that gives only a dim (blurred) reflection of realitys in a riddle or enigma], but then when perfection comes] we shall see in reality and face to face Now I know in part (imperfectly), but then I shall know and understand fully and clearly, even in the same manner as I have been fully and clearly known and understood by God]. 13--And so faith, hope, love abide faith--conviction and belief respecting man's relation to God and divine things; hope--joyful and confident expectation of eternal salvation; love--true affection for God and man, growing out of God's love for and in us], these three; but the greatest of these is love.

Book excerpt: A Christian who does not study the Word of God will not be able to live to the fullness of what God has promised to him or her. The enemy is trying to steal away our peace, and finally destroy us, hoping we will turn away from God. 2Timothy 2:15 Do your best to present yourself to God as an approved worker who has nothing to be ashamed of, handling the word of truth with precision. (ISV) Here we see we are to study His Word, to be approved workers, which is right, but let us look at the second part of this statement. handling the word of truth with precision. The word precision has an implication of importance and we need to know how to handle it in our defence against the enemy. We need to understand the Word of God clearly, so that we can extinguish the fiery arrows of the enemy.

Book excerpt: The message of Revelation speaks to Christians for all times, and historically has especially encouraged persecuted groups. Today Christians in many parts of the world are also at opposition to the worldview of the time. Revelation gives strength to those who are oppressed, and John R. Yeatts’ commentary attends to themes of martyrdom, suffering, service in the world, hope, the triumph of Christ, and the role of the church in bearing witness to the triumphant Christ. The commentary includes clear biblical commentary, relationships between various portions of Scripture, and applications drawn from the Anabaptist tradition and the larger Christian community.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new and transforming approach to the Book of Revelation. Margaret Barker bases her study on a fresh reading of the primary sources. As an Old Testament scholar, she can read Revelation as Hebrew prophecy - ancient temple oracles which inspired Jesus and his own prophecies, and influenced the whole Jerusalem Church. Jerusalem was waiting for their Great High Priest to return and complete the Atonement at the end of the Tenth Jubilee. This expectation fuelled the revolt against Rome. Josephus, who deserted to Rome, was the false prophet. John, who escaped to Patmos, compiled Revelation as a record of the first generation. In the future, he taught, the Lord would return to his people in the Eucharist. This work illuminates the formative years of Christianity, in the social, religious and political situation of mid-first-century Palestine, in a quite remarkable way. It will have profound implications for the understanding of Christian origins and the development of Christian liturgy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dear readers! God had created Adam and had installed him as the guardian of the Garden of Eden, and from his side bone, he had created the woman. Though Adam was not aware of the fruit of a tree that was pertinent to the destruction of humans, which was existed in the garden itself, God himself had informed Adam that the destruction of man would take place for sure through the eating of that fruit. But Adam and Eve, both were subjected to the preaching of the serpent, they had consumed that forbidden fruit and had received death and the punishment from the God. Later, during the period of Noah, God had chosen Noah and his family and had made them build the ark for one hundred and twenty years. During that period, through Noah, God had revealed about the disastrous floods and the destruction of the world through that flood well in advance. But there was not any repentance in the humans. The result was the great disastrous floods. Later, during the period of Moses, as God had intended to get the Israelis from the slavery, he had chosen their leader. Through Moses he had intimated about the destruction that was going to take place in Egypt to the Pharaoh, the ruler, and his province. But the result was just the destruction. Even though, God had revealed them in advance about the destruction. In this way, God had been warning people about the upcoming destruction through the prophets well in advance. The reason is his ambitioning that they would repent for their sins and would come into his protection. The citizens of Nineveh are those who had given up their mistakes and had repentance. These, through the preaching of Jonah, had realized their mistakes; they repented for their sins and had received the protection of God. In this way God himself had revealed about the deeds of destruction that he was about to perform through the preaching of the people that he had chosen, and if they do not repent for their sins, he had been destroying them. Similarly, Lord Christ has foretold about the incidents that are going to happen at the end of world to his beloved disciple John. This would have been taken place two thousand years ago. Those who had learnt all the incidents that would take place by the period of Doomsday from the period of Jesus Christ and had acquired repentance had been protected since then. But those had not repented had not been sentenced yet. But the treatise of Revelation is full of mysteries, secrets, and arcana. The multitudes opine that this treatise is a tough nut to crack for the ordinary people. God warns that the destruction is inevitable. It is the ambition of God that each and every one must know the secrets of his coming, because God is not the one who performs the deeds secretly. He would reveal it well in advance through his prophets, he would give them some time, and if they do not acquire repentance, he would destroy them. As a part of that, he had chosen us, he had bestowed us the divine wisdom and instigated us to write in a simple way that each and every one would easily understand the secrets of revelation that explains the reason and the ways the world is going to end, and through this book he is giving a warning to the citizen of the entire world. So I plead you as the messenger of the Father, Son, and Holy Sprit to repent and live a life that is worthy of God. Otherwise, the end of world is inevitable, inevitable, inevitable. Let the Grace of the Lord be with his servants. Amen.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sometimes the best way to let one know what something is, is to let one know what it isn’t. Today’s typical academic book in eschatology provides the reader with a brief history of the various positions in the field followed by why certain positions should be considered the better options. This is not that book. Over the course of twelve chapters, six sequences will be presented from the three major sources in the New Testament regarding the subject, i.e., Paul’s letters to the Thessalonians, the Olivet Discourse, and John’s visions in Revelation. Through a careful reconciliation of those six sequences, Dr. Steven R. Bates will show that there’s only one sequence of end-times, which he has labeled “The Post-Armageddon, Premillennial Resurrection.” He asserts that had any other sequence of end-times been correct, whether pre-tribulationism, pre-wrath, mid-tribulationism, historic pre-millennialism, post-millennialism, a-millennialism, preterism, or any other sequence that one could possibly imagine, then the proponents of that postulation should be able to take the same six sequences from Scripture and reconcile them precisely with one another, sentence by sentence, and prove whatever sequence they propose. But, of course, no one will ever attempt such an endeavor because it’s theoretically impossible. Scripture’s six sequences only confirm one sequence, and it is the one which has been presented in The Sequence.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author of Revelation sees violence as perfectly legitimate as long as it is initiated by the appropriate authority (God). The author of Revelation does not believe that violence in any form is wrong. Rather, he believes that it is wrong for anyone other than God or his appointed agents to enact violence, and in his eyes it is possible for humans to condemn the wicked to death if they prove themselves by dying in imitation of Christ. In this book Matthew Streett argues that 'bridge figures', such as Jesus Christ, have demonstrated their authority by transitioning from the human realm of the judged to the divine realm of the judge and have earned the right to judge. Initially, only Christ has this right but, as the narrative progresses, figures such as martyrs are shown to have active, judging authority as well. The challenge for the reader is to understand the Book of Revelation's sometimes disturbing message on its own terms.

Some believe the prophesies contained in the book can never be understood; they are a mystery that cannot be revealed and the reading of Revelation is therefore a waste of time. Many believe that the book tells of the coming tribulations that our generation or one of the succeeding ones will face, that the rapture will yet take place and that the millenium has not yet begun. Then there are those who fall in between the two extremes, saying that we are in the millenium, or that the rapture has already occurred; that the prophecies have all been fulfilled or that some have been and some are yet to be.
