Book excerpt: A versatile crossed molecular beam scattering apparatus has been designed and constructed to study the gas-phase kinetics of transition metal-oxygen species. The apparatus consists of a compact and adaptable scattering chamber which contains the facilities to produce and monitor both a high temperature metal vapor beam and a permanent gas beam in a high vacuum environment. It is also equipped with a phase-sensitive, mass spectrometric detection system. Preliminary, low-resolution reactive scattering experiments were carried out. The principal results of these exploratory experiments are the following: (1) There is strong forward peaking in the laboratory coordinate system for the (Ba/N2O) system, with about 99% of the reaction exothermicity going into product internal excitation; and (2) there is reactive scattering in the forward direction in the laboratory system for the (Ce/N2O) system. Book excerpt: Rapid developments in the study of oxygen reaction chemistry occurred as it is succeeded in obtaining an O(1D) beam source and commenced investigating the dynamics of several important reactions of O(3P) and O(1D). In the reaction of O(3P) with C6H6 and C6D6, two competing channels, one producing a stabilized addition complex and the other forming radical products C6H50 + H has been identified. Studies of the effects of collision energy and of deuteration were used to clarify the reaction mechanism. The reaction of O(3P) with another aromatic hydrocarbon toluene, results in competition between two substitution channels, loss of H atom and loss of CH3. In contrast to the 0 + C6H6 reaction, no stabilized oxygen-toluene adduct was observed.

Book excerpt: The reactions of O(3P) with six prototypical unsaturated hydrocarbons, and the reaction of O(1D) with HD, have been studied in high-resolution crossed-molecular-beams scattering experiments with mass-spectrometric detection. The observed laboratory-product angular and velocity distributions unambiguously identify parent-daughter ion pairs, distinguish different neutral sources of the same ion, and have been used to identify the primary products of the reactions. The derived center-of-mass product angular and translational energy distributions have been used to elucidate the detailed reaction dynamics. These results demonstrate that O(3P)-unsaturated hydrocarbon chemistry is dominated by single bond cleavages, leading to radical products exclusively.
