This book was released on 2012-05-22 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume depicts the phenomenon of cross-linguistic influences in the specific context of multilingual language acquisition. It consists of articles on various issues relating to the syntactic and lexical development of foreign language learners from different L1 backgrounds, in many cases involving languages which are typologically distant from English, such as Russian, Croatian, Greek and Portuguese. Individual chapters highlight different areas expected to be especially transfer-prone at the level of grammatical and lexical transfer in particular contexts of language contact.
Book Synopsis Exploring the Second Language Mental Lexicon by : David Singleton

This book was released on 1999-02-11 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume does not offer a complex perspective of the L2 lexicon, but rather represents a sustained attempt to answer some very basic questions clustered around the relationship between the L2 mental lexicon and the L1 mental lexicon. It provides a review of L1 and L2 lexical research issues such as similarities and differences between the conditions of L1 and L2 acquisition, the respective roles of forming and meaning in L1 and L2 processing, and the degree of separation/integration between L1 and L2 lexical operations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is unique because it explores the multilingual lexicon by providing insights from research studies conducted in psycholinguistics, applied linguistics and neurolinguistics. It goes beyond the use of two languages and thus concentrates on a new and developing area in linguistic research. The different perspectives provide a link to the mainstream work on the lexicon and vocabulary acquisition and will stimulate further debate in these areas and in the study of multilingualism.
Book Synopsis First Language Influences on Multilingual Lexicons by : Paul Booth
Download or read book First Language Influences on Multilingual Lexicons written by Paul Booth and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-02-26 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection brings together recent research on the influences between first and additional languages with a focus on the development of multilingual lexicons. Featuring work from an international group of scholars, the volume examines the complex dynamics underpinning vocabulary in second and third languages and the role first languages play within this process. The book is organized around three different facets of research in this area – lexical recognition, processing, and knowledge; the effects of first languages on second language reading and writing, collocations, and translation skills; and, vocabulary testing – drawing on examples from a variety of languages, including European languages, Arabic, and Japanese. Setting the stage for further research on the interplay between first languages and multilingual lexicons, this volume is key reading for students and researchers in applied linguistics, language learning and teaching, bilingualism, second language acquisition, and translation studies.

Book Synopsis Cross-linguistic Influences in Bilingual First Language Acquisition by : Saskia Lührig
Download or read book Cross-linguistic Influences in Bilingual First Language Acquisition written by Saskia Lührig and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2009-03-04 with total page 75 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examination Thesis from the year 2007 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 1,3, University of Cologne, 94 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: There is interdependent development in BFLA. Several studies could show that the systems are influencing each other and they can not be regarded as minor to argue for an autonomous development. Furthermore, there are different methods of predicting which grammatical domains will be influenced and the direction of influence. These are language internal factors, dominance or epiphenomena of speech production. Nevertheless, there are problems as some children did not show the predicted influence. Possible suggestion to the problem is a modification of the criteria already developed and an inclusion of the possibility of individual differences due to different learner types.
Book Synopsis Crosslinguistic Influence in Second Language Acquisition by : Rosa Alonso Alonso
Download or read book Crosslinguistic Influence in Second Language Acquisition written by Rosa Alonso Alonso and published by Multilingual Matters. This book was released on 2016-01-11 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides an unprecedented insight into current approaches to crosslinguistic influence (CLI). The collection investigates a range of themes including linguistic relativity, the possible contributions of neurolinguistics, the problem of cognitive development and the role of the frequency of structures in acquisition from distinct, overlapping and complementary perspectives. Chapters focusing on vocabulary, morphosyntactic categories, semantic structures, and phonetic and phonological structures feature in the volume, as do over 20 languages, in order to offer new insights into both theoretical and empirical issues in CLI, including the consequences of great or little similarity in structures between languages. The relevance of CLI research for teaching is discussed in a number of chapters, as is the phenomenon of multilingualism. The collection will appeal to researchers, graduate and postgraduate students, teachers and professionals interested in the field of CLI in SLA.

Book Synopsis Cross-language Influences in Bilingual Processing and Second Language Acquisition by : Irina Elgort
Download or read book Cross-language Influences in Bilingual Processing and Second Language Acquisition written by Irina Elgort and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2023-04-15 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A great majority of people around the world know more than one language. So, how does knowing one language affect the learning and use of additional languages? The question of cross-language influences is the focus of this book. Do bilinguals hear, understand, and produce language and meaning differently because of the languages they speak? How well can theoretical and computational models of language processing and acquisition explain and predict bilingual use patterns and acquisition trajectories? What learner, language, and context characteristics influence bilingual comprehension and production? This book provides a state-of-the-art review and critique of research into cross-language influences in phonology, lexicon, and morphosyntax, and suggests directions for future research. The interdisciplinary nature of the book bridges the gap between research on bilingualism and second language acquisition. The book will be of interest to graduate students, teachers, and researchers in linguistics and second language acquisition, cognitive psychology, and language education.
