Book excerpt: Oral contraceptives for family planning worldwide have revolutionized the reproductive lives of millions of women since their introduction in the 1960s. Later on, a variety of side-effects including cardiovascular diseases was recognized. In response to these concerns, new generations of combined oral contraceptives were developed that featured lower dose of estrogen and newer, more potent progestogens. The effectiveness and ease of use of combined hormonal contraceptives suggest that they will continue to be used to a significant extent in the future. This ninety-first volume of IARC Monograp.

This book was released on 2007 with total page 642 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This eighty-ninth volume of the IARC Monographs is the third and last of a series on tobacco-related agents. Volume 83 reported on the carcinogenicity of tobacco smoke and involuntary smoking (second-hand smoke or environmental tobacco smoke) (IARC 2004a). Volume 85 summarized the evidence on the carcinogenic risk of chewing betel quid with and without tobacco (IARC 2004b). That volume explored the variety of products chewed in South Asia and other parts of the word that contain areca nut in combination with other ingredients, often including tobacco. In this eighty-ninth volume, the carcinogenic risks associated with the use of smokeless tobacco, including chewing tobacco and snuff, are considered in a first monograph. The second monograph reviews some tobacco-specific nitrosamines. These agents were evaluated earlier in Volume 37 of the Monographs (IARC 1985) and information gathered since that time has been summarized and evaluated.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cancers due to exposures in the workplace in developing countries have received little attention because of the overriding problems in those regions of communicable diseases, poverty, malnutrition, vulnerability to natural disasters and war. This book shows, however, that the global process of industrialization is resulting in increased exposures to occupational carcinogens in developing countries, owing to unsafe technology, bad working conditions, ineffective legislation on occupational safety and health and inadequate supervision. These factors are exacerbated by the fact that a workforce with generally poor health and nutritional status and which includes many women and children is more vulnerable to many diseases, including cancer. The transfer of hazardous industries and wastes from developed to developing countries is of particular concern. This publication brings together all of the available published data on occupational cancer in developing countries and presents the results of a survey carried out at IARC on common occupational exposures and measures that have been taken to control them. The overview indicates where information is lacking about the health effects of agents used in developing countries, many of which are banned or restricted elsewhere.

Book excerpt: The IARC Monographs series publishes authoritative independent assessments by international experts of the carcinogenic risks posed to humans by a variety of agents, mixtures and exposures. They are a resource of information for both researchers and national and international authorities. This volume is particularly significant because tobacco smoke not only causes more deaths from cancer than any other known agent; it also causes more deaths from vascular and respiratory diseases. This volume contains all the relevant information on both direct and passive smoking. It is organised by first looking at the nature of agent before collecting the evidence of cancer in humans. This is followed by carcinogenicity studies on animals and then any other data relevant to an evaluation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This directory is an annual compendium of current research in epidemiology. The 1994 edition (17th in the series) contains abstracts of the 1246 projects being carried out in over 80 countries, and reflects the huge range of epidemiological research into the distribution, causes, and prevention of cancer around the world. Each project is indexed in up to eight separate indexes, enabling rapid searches for current studies fitting almost any description. The eight indexes are: name of investigator(s); keywords; cancer site(s); study type (cohort, case-control, etc.); country; chemical exposure; occupational exposure; and cancer registry. The Directory also includes comprehensive lists of 261 population-based cancer registries and over 300 biological material banks, all available for collaboration in epidemiological research. The addresses, telephone and telex numbers of nearly 1000 principal investigators is provided to improve contact between research workers.

This book was released on 1995 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evaluates the carcinogenic risk to humans posed by occupational exposures to wood dust and formaldehyde. A number of occupational situations that involve exposure to wood dust also entail exposure to formaldehyde, as in plywood and particle board manufacture, during furniture and cabinet-making, and during parquet floor sanding and varnishing. The carcinogenic risks of wood dust are evaluated in the first monograph. The highest occupational exposures were noted to occur in wood furniture and cabinet manufacture, especially during machine sanding and similar operations, in the finishing departments of plywood and particle-board mills, and in the workroom air of sawmills and planer mills near chippers, saws, and planers. Citing findings from several recent well-designed case-control studies, the monograph concludes that occupational exposure to wood dust is causally related to adenocarcinoma of the nasal cavities and paranasal sinuses. The evaluation further concluded that the excess risk of cancer is attributable to wood dust per se, rather than to other exposures in the workplace. Wood dust was classified as carcinogenic to humans. Cancer risk associated with occupational exposure to formaldehyde is assessed in the second monograph. The assessment draws on findings from several cohort and case-control investigations of the relationship between exposure to formaldehyde and cancer of the oral cavity, pharynx, and respiratory tract. Citing inconsistencies in the reported results, the monograph concludes that these epidemiological studies can do no more than suggest a causal role of occupational exposure to formaldehyde in carcinoma of the nasal cavities and paranasal sinuses. The review found no evidence of excess risk for oropharyngeal, laryngeal or lung cancer among exposed workers. Several studies in which formaldehyde was administered to rats by inhalation showed evidence of carcinogenicity. Similar studies in hamsters showed no evidence of carcinogenicity, and studies in mice either showed no effect or were inadequate for evaluation. In rats administered formaldehyde in drinking-water, increased incidences were seen of forestomach papillomas in one study and of leukemias and gastrointestinal tract tumors in another; two other studies gave negative results. Formaldehyde was classified as probably carcinogenic to humans.
