This book was released on 2004 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis Literary Translation, Reception, and Transfer by : Norbert Bachleitner
Download or read book Literary Translation, Reception, and Transfer written by Norbert Bachleitner and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2020-09-21 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The three concepts mentioned in the title of this volume imply the contact between two or more literary phenomena; they are based on similarities that are related to a form of ‘travelling’ and imitation or adaptation of entire texts, genres, forms or contents. Transfer comprises all sorts of ‘travelling’, with translation as a major instrument of transferring literature across linguistic and cultural barriers. Transfer aims at the process of communication, starting with the source product and its cultural context and then highlighting the mediation by certain agents and institutions to end up with inclusion in the target culture. Reception lays its focus on the receiving culture, especially on critcism, reading, and interpretation. Translation, therefore, forms a major factor in reception with the general aim of reception studies being to reveal the wide spectrum of interpretations each text offers. Moreover, translations are the prime instrument in the distribution of literature across linguistic and cultural borders; thus, they pave the way for gaining prestige in the world of literature. The thirty-eight papers included in this volume and dedicated to research in this area were previously read at the ICLA conference 2016 in Vienna. They are ample proof that the field remains at the center of interest in Comparative Literature.

Book Synopsis Social Media in Industrial China by : Xinyuan Wang
Download or read book Social Media in Industrial China written by Xinyuan Wang and published by UCL Press. This book was released on 2016-09-13 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life outside the mobile phone is unbearable.’ Lily, 19, factory worker. Described as the biggest migration in human history, an estimated 250 million Chinese people have left their villages in recent decades to live and work in urban areas. Xinyuan Wang spent 15 months living among a community of these migrants in a small factory town in southeast China to track their use of social media. It was here she witnessed a second migration taking place: a movement from offline to online. As Wang argues, this is not simply a convenient analogy but represents the convergence of two phenomena as profound and consequential as each other, where the online world now provides a home for the migrant workers who feel otherwise ‘homeless’. Wang’s fascinating study explores the full range of preconceptions commonly held about Chinese people – their relationship with education, with family, with politics, with ‘home’ – and argues why, for this vast population, it is time to reassess what we think we know about contemporary China and the evolving role of social media.
Book Synopsis Facing Diasporic Trauma by : Fatim Boutros
Download or read book Facing Diasporic Trauma written by Fatim Boutros and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2015-11-09 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fictional writing has an important mnemonic function for the Afro-Carib-bean community. It facilitates an encounter between contemporary societies and their historical origins. The representation of diasporic trauma in the novels of Fred D’Aguiar, John Hearne, and Caryl Phillips challenges territorial under¬standings of nationality and raises awareness of the eurocentric basis of Western historiography. Slavery is a recurring motif of the nine novels analysed in this study. They narrate the fates of silenced victims who all share the traumatic experience of racial violence even if otherwise separated through time, space, gender and age. These charismatic fictional characters facilitate an empathic access to the history of slavery that goes beyond the anonymity of traditional historical sources. Their most private and intimate sorrows make the traumatic conditions of slavery appear much less remote and reveal their suffering. The euphemistic and distorting selection of the events that has been passed down by the dominant culture is thus countered by a relentless display of historical violence. These literary images establish an important symbolic repertoire and introduce powerful founding myths of the diaspora. In spite of the traumatic foundations of the community, the nine novels display considerable optimism about the possibility of a convivial future that transcends racial boundaries. The capacity and willingness to improvise and adapt to new environments and to do so even in face of a traumatic heritage can be regarded as the most important precondition for positive future developments within the matrix of a rapidly transforming global environment.

Download or read book Don't Let It Happen written by Eric L. Adams and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2009-08 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Don't Let It Happen is a life saving resource, designed to assist parents in detecting when their children are involved in an activity that can be harmful to themselves and/or other family members. Far too often, we take note when a young adult engages in harmful behavior, but we may not realize the broader impact their actions can have. As I will point out throughout this book, a young adult's actions can mean the difference between life and death for an entire family. This book is primarily for law-abiding citizens trying to raise their children and support their families. I hope it acts as a life raft in a sea of confusion. Read it and take the first steps toward personal safety for you and your children. After completing a distinguished 22-year career in the NYPD, Captain Eric Adams retired and was elected to the New York State Senate by the residents of the 20th Senatorial District in Brooklyn, NY. Currently, Senator Eric Adams serves as Chairman of the Veterans, Homeland Security, and Military Affairs Committee and Chairman of the Racing, Gaming, and Wagering Committee. He is a member of the Finance, Judiciary, Banks, Consumer Protection, and Energy and Telecommunications Committees. Eric Adams is also a co founder of 100 Blacks in Law Enforcement Who Care. Download or read book Brouhaha written by Lionel Ruffel and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2018-01-31 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within the hypermediated age where knowledge production is decentered and horizontal, the experience of lived time has become a concordance of temporalities. The literary imagination, which was emblematic of modernity and thoroughly connected to the book as a support structure, has now become integrated within a much vaster regime of publication. Thought concerning the world is from now on a thought concerning a plurality of worlds. By way of six guiding threads (exposition, media, controversy, publication, institutionalization, archaeology), this essay describes the transformation of cultural forms and visions of history.
Book Synopsis Writing After Postcolonialism by : Jane Hiddleston
Download or read book Writing After Postcolonialism written by Jane Hiddleston and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-09-21 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Focusing on francophone writing from North Africa as it has developed since the 1980s, Writing After Postcolonialism explores the extent to which the notion of 'postcolonialism' is still resonant for literary writers a generation or more after independence, and examines the troubled status of literature in society and politics during this period. Whilst analysing the ways in which writers from Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia have reacted to political unrest and social dissatisfaction, Jane Hiddleston offers a compelling reflection on literature's ability to interrogate the postcolonial nation as well as on its own uncertain role in the current context. The book sets out both to situate the recent generation of francophone writers in North Africa in relation to contemporary politics, to postcolonial theory, and evolving notions of 'world literature, and to probe the ways in which a new and highly sophisticated set of writers reflect on the very notion of 'the literary' during this period of transition.'
