Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Modular High-temperature Gas-cooled Reactor Power Plant" introduces the power plants driven by modular high temperature gas-cooled reactors (HTR), which are characterized by their inherent safety features and high output temperatures. HTRs have the potential to be adopted near demand side to supply both electricity and process heat, directly replacing conventional fossil fuels. The world is confronted with two dilemmas in the energy sector, namely climate change and energy supply security. HTRs have the potential to significantly alleviate these concerns. This book will provide readers with a thorough understanding of HTRs, their history, principles, and fields of application. The book is intended for researchers and engineers involved with nuclear engineering and energy technology.

Book excerpt: Inadvertent admission of moisture into the primary system of a modular high-temperature gas-cooled reactor has been identified in US Department of Energy-sponsored studies as an important safety concern. The work described here develops an analytical methodology to quantify the pressure and reactivity consequences of steam-generator tube rupture and other moisture-ingress-related incidents. Important neutronic and thermohydraulic processes are coupled with reactivity feedback and safety and control system responses. The rate and magnitude of steam buildup are found to be dominated by major system features such as break size compared with safety valve capacity and reliability and less sensitive to factors such as heat transfer coefficients. The results indicate that ingress transients progress at a slower pace than previously predicted by bounding analyses, with milder power overshoots and more time for operator or automatic corrective actions.

Book excerpt: A rapid water ingress transient, resulting from steam generator tube or tube-sheet failures, could lead to a reactivity insertion and core heatup in the Modular High Temperature Gas-Cooled Reactors. This paper considers the effect of hypothetical rapid and severe water ingress scenarios of extremely low probability, and assesses the effect of such transients on potentially excessive fuel temperatures and subsequent fuel failures. The results indicate that for the worst postulated scenarios the conservatively set limiting fuel temperature of 1600°C is indeed exceeded, but only for a few seconds, and then only in a small fraction of the core. Therefore, it appears that even the most severe and rapid water ingress transients would not lead to significant fuel failures. Parametric variations of the key variables indicate that the reactivity worth of water and the fuel thermal properties must be established with high confidence as the design progresses. 7 refs., 11 figs., 3 tabs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Considering an extremely hypothetical scenario of complete cross duct failure and unlimited air supply into the reactor vessel of a modular high temperature gas cooled ractor, it is found that the potential air inflow remains limited due to the high friction pressure drop through the active core. All incoming air will be oxidized to CO and some local external burning would be temporarily possible in such a scenario. The accident would have to continue with unlimited air supply for hundreds of hours before the core structural integrity would be jeopardized.

Book excerpt: This publication reports on the results of a coordinated research project on advances in high temperature gas cooled reactor (HTGR) fuel technology and describes the findings of research activities on coated particle developments. These comprise two specific benchmark exercises with the application of HTGR fuel performance and fission product release codes, which helped compare the quality and validity of the computer models against experimental data. The project participants also examined techniques for fuel characterization and advanced quality assessment/quality control. The key exercise included a round-robin experimental study on the measurements of fuel kernel and particle coating properties of recent Korean, South African and US coated particle productions applying the respective qualification measures of each participating Member State. The summary report documents the results and conclusions achieved by the project and underlines the added value to contemporary knowledge on HTGR fuel.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Objective is to define the nuclear criticality research program needed in support of the HTGR fuel cycle outside reactors. An experimental plan and supportive calculational efforts are presented. Currently, some data on well-moderated 235U and 233U exist which are applicable to thorium--uranium fuel mixtures. However, experimental data are needed for undermoderated 235U and 233U systems. Data are needed also on 235U and 233U containing soluble neutron poisons and in the presence of fixed neutron poisons. For future fuels and processes in which thorium and uranium cannot be separated, there would be a large economic incentive for including the thorium in the criticality considerations. The research program presented covers all aspects of the experiments needed to provide data in the above areas. (DLC).

Book excerpt: The Generation IV Forum is an international nuclear energy research initiative aimed at developing the fourth generation of nuclear reactors, envisaged to enter service halfway the 21st century. One of the Generation IV reactor systems is the Gas Cooled Fast Reactor (GCFR), the subject of study in this thesis. The Generation IV reactor concepts should improve all aspects of nuclear power generation. Within Generation IV, the GCFR concept specifically targets sustainability of nuclear power generation. The Gas Cooled Fast Reactor core power density is high in comparison to other gas cooled reactor concepts. Like all nuclear reactors, the GCFR produces decay heat after shut down, which has to be transported out of the reactor under all circumstances. The layout of the primary system therefore focuses on using natural convection Decay Heat Removal (DHR) where possible, with a large coolant fraction in the core to reduce friction losses.
