Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The starting point for this compilation is the wish to rethink the concept of antisemitism, race and gender in light of Sartre’s pioneering Réflexions sur la Question Juive seventy years after its publication. The book gathers texts by prestigious scholars from different disciplines in the Humanities and the Social Sciences, with the objective or revisiting this work locating it within the setting of two other pioneering – and we argue, related – publications, namely Simone De Beauvoir’s Le deuxième sexe of 1949 and Franz Fanon’s Peau noire et masques blancs of 1952. This particular and original standpoint sheds new light on the different meanings and political functions of the concept of antisemitism in a political and historical context marked by the post-modern concepts of multi-ethnicity and multiculturalism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Synopsis Manifesto of New Realism by : Maurizio Ferraris
Download or read book Manifesto of New Realism written by Maurizio Ferraris and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2014-12-01 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philosophical realism has taken a number of different forms, each applied to different topics and set against different forms of idealism and subjectivism. Maurizio Ferraris's Manifesto of New Realism takes aim at postmodernism and hermeneutics, arguing against their emphasis on reality as constructed and interpreted. While acknowledging the value of these criticisms of traditional, dogmatic realism, Ferraris insists that the insights of postmodernism have reached a dead end. Calling for the discipline to turn its focus back to truth and the external world, Ferraris's manifesto—which sparked lively debate in Italy and beyond—offers a wiser realism with social and political relevance.
Book Synopsis The Philosophy of Jean-Paul Sartre by : Jean-Paul Sartre
Download or read book The Philosophy of Jean-Paul Sartre written by Jean-Paul Sartre and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in Great Britain in 1968, this is an authoritative introduction to the life of one of the greatest intellectual figures of the twentieth century. Prompted by the belief that none of the parts of Sartree(tm)s work is fully intelligible apart from the whole , this ambitious volume attempts to provide a synoptic view of Sartree(tm)s oeuvre in its entirety. The editor, Robert Denoon Cumming, has organised the work around certain concepts which are central to Sartrian thought, notably Consciousness in its relation to Being, to e~the Othere(tm), to Art, Literature, History and Society. The reader can see for himself how Sartree(tm)s aesthetic and highly individual existentialism of La Nause is systematically transformed into the neo-Marxist sociological theory of his Critique de la Raison dialectique. By a skilful process of editing, Professor Cumming has provided an authoritative introduction to the life of one of the greatest intellectual figures of modern times.
Book Synopsis New Perspectives on Sartre by : Adrian van den Hoven
Download or read book New Perspectives on Sartre written by Adrian van den Hoven and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2010-05-11 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume deals with a number of topics that have not previously been specifically addressed before in a single text. A chapter on Sartre and religion talks about his thought in relation to Christianity, Judaism and Buddhism, while one on Sartre and children discusses his work in relation to the issues of freedom, pregnancy and autism. Beyond this, there are an additional seven chapters covering a wide variety of topics by leading scholars in the fields of philosophy, literature psychology, history and political thought. While prior publications on Sartre have generally divided his work into two periods, pre-and post-Marxist, this volume deliberately stresses a middle and final period as well. As representative of the middle period, there is an emphasis on Notebooks for an Ethics, while Sartre's last work, Hope Now, is also treated as being philosophically significant in its own right. This approach helps to cast a new light on what Sartre has to say about authenticity, childhood and consciousness as embodied, among other subjects. The volume also addresses many and diverse issues of current interest, including those of freedom, Marxism and Sartre's relation to ethics. There are sections of the book that deal with history and the historical situations that helped to shape Sartre’s thought, as well as articles that deal with Sartre as a specifically French thinker. A chapter deals with Sartre’s relation to women , and here the issues of maternity as problematic, plus authentic, adult relationships are discussed. Finally, in addition to authors in philosophy and literature, there are articles by a child psychiatrist and a clinical psychologist to help to provide new insights on Sartre's work. Even as an academic philosopher Sartre always remained an iconoclast and the aim of this book is, at least partially to capture and provide the reader with insight into this spirit.
Book Synopsis Political Disaffection in Contemporary Democracies by : Mariano Torcal

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Citizens of many democracies are becoming more critical of basic political institutions and detached and disaffected from politics in general. This is a new comparative analysis of this trend that focuses on major democracies throughout Latin America, Asia and Central Europe. It brings together leading scholars to address three key areas of the current debate: the conceptual discussion surrounding political disaffection the factors causing voters to turn away from politics the actual consequences for democracy This is a highly relevant topic as representative democracies are coming to face new developments. It deals with the reasons and consequences of the so called ‘democratic deficit’ in a systematic way that enables the reader to develop a well-rounded sense of the area and its main debates. This book is an invaluable resource for all students of political science, sociology, cultural studies and comparative politics.

Download or read book The Wisdom of Sartre written by Philosophical Library and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2010-09-07 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DIV DIVAn invaluable introduction to the leading French intellectual of the twentieth centuryDIV /div/divDIVThe Wisdom of Sartre offers key excerpts from the eloquent French writer, playwright, and philosopher’s masterpiece, Being and Nothingness. From this collection, readers will discover the strongest themes in his early philosophical work: an ontological account of what it means to be human, and the role of perception, knowledge, and consciousness in the practical demands of life. Sartre’s view that man’s freedom is a unique source of both misery and pleasure and that the question of which will prevail depends on man’s awareness and commitment to his freedom is both thought provoking and timely./div /div
Book Synopsis Marx and Latin America by : José M. Aricó
Download or read book Marx and Latin America written by José M. Aricó and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2013-12-10 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a work centred on Marx's harsh biography of Simón Bolívar, José Aricó examines why Latin America was apparently 'excluded' from Marx's thought, challenging the allegation that this expressed some 'Eurocentric' prejudice. Aricó shows how the German thinker's hostility towards the Bonapartism and authoritarianism he identified in the Liberator coloured his attitude towards the continent and the significance of its independence-processes. Whilst criticising Marx's misreading of Latin-American realities, Aricó demonstrates contemporaneous, countervailing tendencies in Marx's thought, including his appraisal of the revolutionary potentialities of other 'peripheral' extra-European societies. As such, Aricó convincingly argues that Marx's work was not a dogma of linear 'progress', but a living, contradictory body of thought constantly in development. English translation of the Marx y América Latina edition, Fondo de Cultura Económica, 2010.
