Book excerpt: "This paper identifies and develops an approach to improved labor-management relations principally in manufacturing industries in the United States. Though manufacturing is the main target for improving relations it is not the only sector that needs such improvement. The program can be used in other business environments, i.e., the service sector. Along with the improved relations, companies can realize increased productivity through cooperative efforts from labor and management. ... By having the employees involved in decision making and having responsibility for things within their control, it is managements hope that employees will be able to improve the production, quality and service. ... the evolution of employee participation programs will be explored. There are two stages in the evolution of employee participation programs. The first stage is an Employee Involvement Program, and the second stage is an Employee Empowerment Program. These two stages are often confused as being the same; they are different. These differences will be explored in this paper."--Author's Abstract.
