Book excerpt: As discipleship demands new perspectives and priorities, these homilies articulate relationships in a variety of settings, images and lifestyles of being in the world with others. Though they help us understand the presence of God in our lives, living with our own mystery and spirituality becomes like a “dependable compass” that is always there to guide us. God sees what is in each human heart and we give ourselves the space and the time to nourish it with the mystery of his love for us. It is our road map as we walk by faith and not by sight alone. Jesus’ life, teaching, and ministry in a particular place, time, and culture have great significance to our journey as far as our mission is concerned. He identifies himself with the people across cultures and he enters into solidarity with those in need. St Augustine once said, “Faith is to believe what we do not see; and the reward of this faith is to see what we believe.” We may not know where our journey takes us because there is not much of a plan, but it is our faith that sustains us to complete a journey through thick and thin. It provides us with the opportunity to let the mind wander and watch and listen to God in prayer. Hence, whether it is a daily walk or the journey through daily life, these homilies are offered to help us continue with confidence; with enthusiasm to move on and in every sense be men and women of the Gospel. After all, as the late Mother Teresa of Calcutta once wrote: We cannot all do great things, but can do small things with great love.”

Book Synopsis Dante Philomythes and Philosopher by : Patrick Boyde
Download or read book Dante Philomythes and Philosopher written by Patrick Boyde and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1981 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is devoted to a full and lucid exposition of Boyde's ideas. In the first two parts, the author presents a systematic account of the universe as Dante accepted it, and explains the processes of 'creation' and 'generation' as they operate in the non-human parts of the cosmos. Dr Boyde then shows how the two processes combine in Dante's theory of human embryology, and how this combination affects the issues of love, choice and freedom. The third and last part of the book consolidates these expository sections with a generous selection of quotations from Dante's authorities and from his own works in prose. At the same time, the book offers far more than a clear account of Dante's cosmology and anthropology. Dr Boyde is interested in Dante's ideas in so far as they inspired and gave shape to the Divine Comedy. Furthermore, in every chapter he demonstrates how the relevant concepts and habits of thought were transmuted into imagery, symbolism, and dramatic scenes, or simply transformed by the energy and concision of Dante's poetic style.

Download or read book Vita Nova written by Dante Alighieri and published by Northwestern University Press. This book was released on 2012-03-14 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recepient, 2013 Guggenheim Fellowship Dante’s Vita Nova (circa 1292–1295) depicts the joys and sorrows, the discoveries and conflicts of Dante’s early love for Beatrice—who would achieve later and even greater fame in Commedia—starting with his first sighting of her and culminating in his prevision of Beatrice among the beatified in heaven. Award-winning translator and poet Andrew Frisardi channels the vigor and nuance of Dante’s first masterpiece for a modern audience. The “little book,” as Dante calls it, consists of thirty-one lyric poems—mostly sonnets—embedded in a prose narrative, which both recounts an apparently autobiographical set of events also evoked in the poems and offers analysis of the poems’ construction in the medieval critical tradition of divisio textus, or division of the text. Dante selected poetry he had written before age twenty-eight or so and wrote the prose to shape it into a story. The poems anthologize Dante’s growth as a poet, from the influence of his earliest mentors to the stylistic and thematic breakthroughs of his poetic coming-of-age. The interplay of poetry and prose in Vita Nova, along with the further distinction in the latter between autobiography and critical divisioni, presents a particular challenge for any translator. Frisardi faithfully voices the complex meter and rhyme schemes of the poetry while capturing the tone of each of the prose styles. His introduction and in-depth annotations provide additional context for the twenty-first-century reader.
