Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The forms, policies, and practices of citizenship are changing rapidly around the globe, and the meaning of these changes is the subject of deep dispute. Citizenship Today brings together leading experts in their field to define the core issues at stake in the citizenship debates. The first section investigates central trends in national citizenship policy that govern access to citizenship, the rights of aliens, and plural nationality. The following section explores how forms of citizenship and their practice are, can, and should be located within broader institutional structures. The third section examines different conceptions of citizenship as developed in the official policies of governments, the scholarly literature, and the practice of immigrants and the final part looks at the future for citizenship policy. Contributors include Rainer Bauböck (Austrian Academy of Sciences), Linda Bosniak (Rutgers University School of Law, Camden), Francis Mading Deng (Brookings Institute), Adrian Favell (University of Sussex, UK), Richard Thompson Ford (Stanford University), Vicki C. Jackson (Georgetown University Law Center), Paul Johnston (Citizenship Project), Christian Joppke (European University Institute, Florence), Karen Knop (University of Toronto), Micheline Labelle (Université du Québec à Montréal), Daniel Salée (Concordia University, Montreal), and Patrick Weil (University of Paris 1, Sorbonne)

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past two decades, money laundering has been presented by policy makers as a grave global threat to the world economy, undermining its foundations while allowing trillions of dollars in dirty money to slip into the upperworld economy. In order to fend off this threat, the authorities put into place a global mechanism of surveillance and control, imposing heavy multi-million dollar burdens on the financial industry, ultimately to be paid by customers. Despite these efforts and strengthened state control, the threat still appears to be the same as it was 20 years ago. Moreover, the real menace now appears instead to be the result of the behavior of respectable, but recklessly operating, bankers. What is going on? This work critically investigates the origins and foundations of the global anti-money laundering policy. The book describes its obscure inception and exposes the incoherent arguments being accepted as "conventional wisdom" that policy makers use to introduce new and stricter regulations. Providing a step-by-step analysis of the current fear-driven policy, the book makes clear that this important subject needs to be addressed within a reasoned and realistic framework. It provides an awareness of the serious consequences of a policy that appears to have lost its sense of proportionality and to be based on poorly substantiated fear.

Book excerpt: Origins of Globalization draws widely on ancient sources and modern economic theory to detail the concept of “known world” globalization, arguing that a mixed economy--similar in many respects to our own--existed in a variety of forms throughout the ancient world. By analyzing the business practices of the ancient world--phenomena such as resource and market seeking behavior, international trade from China, India and Rome, to Africa and even northern and western parts of Europe, Small and Medium Size Enterprises (SMEs) operating internationally and outsourcing production, multicultural workforces, tariff reduced zones, interregional tax issues, and the management of currency risks--the authors provide readers with a unique historical interpretation of the contemporary globalizing economy and a durable theoretical framework for future historical economic analyses.
