Book excerpt: The objective of this book is to review the position of investigative interviewing in a variety of different countries, with different types of criminal justice systems, and consists of chapters written by leading authorities in the field, both academics and practitioners. A wide range of often controversial questions are addressed, including issues raised by the treatment of detainees at Guantanamo Bay, The Reid model for interviewing and miscarriages of justice, the role of legislation in preventing bad practice, the effectiveness of ethical interviewing, investigative interviewing and human rights, responses to miscarriages of justice, and the likely future of investigative interviewing. The book also makes comparisons between British and American approaches to detention without trial, and the role of confession evidence within adversarial legal systems. It also develops a set of proposals to minimise the risks of miscarriages of justice, irrespective of jurisdiction.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The four most popular restorative justice books in the Justice & Peacebuilding series—The Little Book of Restorative Justice: Revised and Updated, The Little Book of Victim Offender Conferencing, The Little Book of Family Group Conferences, and The Little Book of Circle Processes—in one affordable volume. And now with a new foreword from Howard Zehr, one of the founders of restorative justice! Restorative justice, with its emphasis on identifying the justice needs of everyone involved in a crime, is a worldwide movement of growing influence that is helping victims and communities heal while holding criminals accountable for their actions. This is not a soft-on-crime, feel-good philosophy, but rather a concrete effort to bring justice and healing to everyone involved in a crime. Circle processes draw from the Native American tradition of gathering in a circle to solve problems as a community. Peacemaking circles are used in neighborhoods, in schools, in the workplace, and in social services to support victims of all kinds, resolve behavior problems, and create positive climates. Each book is written by a scholar at the forefront of these movements, making this important reading for classrooms, community leaders, and anyone involved with conflict resolution.

Book excerpt: This training was intended to demonstrate innovative methods of crime prevention and preventive mental health. Processing family disturbances constitutes a major aspect of police work. Traditional police approaches to the problem do not reflect the realities of this police experience. There is evidence that a significant proportion of injuries and fatalities suffered by police occur in the highly volatile family conflict situation. The present project attempted to modify family assaults and family homicides and to reduce personal danger to police officers in such situations. The project attempted the development of a new preventive mental health strategy. Assuming that family conflict may be an early sign of emotional disorder in one or all of the participants, the project attempted to utilize policemen as front-line casefinders in keeping with theories of primary prevention. It was proposed that selected policemen could be provided with interpersonal skills necessary to effect constructive outcomes in deteriorating situations which require police intervention. Rejection of an exclusively specialized role for the police officers involved was a major emphasis. The program avoided the conversion of policemen into social workers or psychotherapists. The officers were expected to perform all generalized police patrol functions but were the individuals dispatched on all family disputes in a given geographical area. In addition to continuous group experience, each family specialist was assigned an individual consultant for at least one hour weekly consultation. The individual consultants were advanced clinical psychology students who acquired in this way an unusual community consultation experience. The reciprocal effect of these encounters on the students and upon the policemen is self-evident.

The book explores the major clinical issues that are relevant for adopting evidence-based practices and demonstrates how to implement them. Topics include legislation, law enforcement, courts, corrections, actuarial assessment instruments, treatment fidelity, diverse populations, mental illness, substance use and juvenile delinquency. Clinical Interventions in Criminal Justice Settings models opportunities for evidence-based practice during entry into the criminal justice system (arrest), prosecution (court, pretrial release, jail, and prison), sentencing (community supervision, incarceration), and corrections (jail, prison, probation and parole). Addresses offenders in all four components of the criminal justice system—legislation, law enforcement, courts and corrections Covers the use of actuarial risk assessment instruments for clinical decision-making Includes tools that predict recidivism, levels of service needed, and future offending behavior Separates specific practices for juvenile and adult offenders Delves into specific special populations, such as those with HIV and AIDS, substance abuse, co-occurring disorders and homelessness

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Helping students develop a passion to learn more about the dynamic field of criminal justice, this concise bestseller introduces students to the criminal justice system by following the case studies of four individuals in their real-life progression through the system. Each case study is strategically woven throughout the book to help students remember core concepts and make connections between different branches of the system. In addition to illustrating the real-life pathways and outcomes of criminal behavior and victimization, authors Callie Marie Rennison and Mary Dodge provide students with a more inclusive overview of criminal justice by offering insight into overlooked demographics and the perspectives of victims. This newly revised Third Edition encourages students to think critically and discuss issues affecting today’s criminal justice system with engaging coverage of victims, criminal justice professionals, offenders, and controversial issues found in the criminal justice process. New to this Edition Ten new “Policy Issues” boxes show students how recent policy has impacted the field of criminal justice with discussions of crime and undocumented immigrants, training for police officers when working with individuals who are mentally ill, the fear of violence on college campuses, and more. New full-page infographics, “Data Matters: The Story in Numbers,” brings data to life by breaking down complex information into accessible and interesting visuals—enabling students to better examine key issues from a clearer and more accurate perspective. Expanded discussion surrounding the legal definition of rape and how it applies to the highly publicized Brock Turner case further clarifies for students what is (and isn’t) considered rape in the eyes of the law across different states. Current topics affecting today’s criminal justice system encourage classroom discussion of pressing topics such as the country’s changing marijuana laws, why diversity in policing has been historically low, policing technology and privacy concerns, the policies of the Trump administration, and peer courts in the juvenile justice system. Updated statistics and data are included where available, along with an acknowledgement and discussion surrounding why some FBI and NCVS data had not been updated at the time of press. SAGE course outcomes help you track and measure student success. Crafted with specific goals in mind and vetted by advisors in the field, SAGE course outcomes clearly define and benchmark the knowledge and skills students are expected to achieve upon completion of your course.

Book excerpt: This textbook was developed from an idiom shared by the authors and contributors alike: ethics and ethical challenges are generally black and white - not gray. They are akin to the pregnant woman or the gunshot victim; one cannot be a little pregnant or a little shot. Consequently, professional conduct is either ethical or it is not. Unafraid to be the harbingers, Turvey and Crowder set forth the parameters of key ethical issues across the five pillars of the criminal justice system: law enforcement, corrections, courts, forensic science, and academia. It demonstrates how each pillar is dependent upon its professional membership, and also upon the supporting efforts of the other pillars - with respect to both character and culture. With contributions from case-working experts across the CJ spectrum, this text reveals hard-earned insights into issues that are often absent from textbooks born out of just theory and research. Part 1 examines ethic issues in academia, with chapters on ethics for CJ students, CJ educators, and ethics in CJ research. Part 2 examines ethical issues in law enforcement, with separate chapters on law enforcement administration and criminal investigations. Part 3 examines ethical issues in the forensic services, considering the separate roles of crime lab administration and evidence examination. Part 4 examines ethical issues in the courts, with chapters discussing the prosecution, the defense, and the judiciary. Part 5 examines ethical issues in corrections, separately considering corrections staff and treatment staff in a forensic setting. The text concludes with Part 6, which examines ethical issues in a broad professional sense with respect to professional organizations and whistleblowers. Ethical Justice: Applied Issues for Criminal Justice Students and Professionals is intended for use as a textbook at the college and university, by undergraduate students enrolled in a program related to any of the CJ professions. It is intended to guide them through the real-world issues that they will encounter in both the classroom and in the professional community. However, it can also serve as an important reference manual for the CJ professional that may work in a community that lacks ethical mentoring or leadership. First of its kind overview of the five pillars of criminal justice: academia, law enforcement, forensic services, courts and corrections Written by practicing criminal justice professionals, from across every pillar Offers a realistic overview of ethical issues confronted by criminals justice students and professionals Examines sensitive subjects often ignored in other criminal justice ethics texts Numerous cases examples in each chapter to facilitate instruction and learning
