Book excerpt: "Screening Justice in Canada is a scholarly exploration of films that focus centrally on crime and justice in Canada. Defining Canadian crime films as those that focus significantly on crime and its consequences in Canadian society, the book is as much about the ways crime films provide vehicles for understanding what it means to be Canadian as it is about the depiction and representation of crime and justice in Canadian cinema and television. The films examined in this book span all regions of Canada and include case studies of films set in Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Nunavut, British Columbia's Lower Mainland, the Canadian prairies, Ontario, and Quebec. Moreover, Canadian crime films produced from the 1930s to the present are included in these analyses. Contributors to this multi-and interdisciplinary volume are drawn from Criminology, Criminal Justice Studies, English literature, Art History, Film Studies and Communications, Cultural Anthropology, Sociology and Women's and Gender Studies. This is the first comprehensive Canadian volume on crime films that takes up cultural criminology's call for more critical scholarly analyses of the interplay between crime, culture, and society. Adopting American criminologist Nicole Rafter's concept "popular criminology," the essays in this volume all take crime films seriously as popular efforts to understand the causes, consequences and meanings of crime in Canadian society."--

Groupliving requires the establishment of social and legal norms to governbehaviour, and societies seek to prevent violations of these norms byimposing penalties on those who break the rules. One form of legalviolation is categorized as 'crime,' and the perpetrators as'criminals.' Many criminologists study these rule-breakers tofind out why they step outside the mores and laws of their society.

Book excerpt: "The goal of this textbook is to provide an introductory, yet in-depth examination and critical analysis of organized crime and its control in Canada. This goal will be met by exploring and critically analyzing definitions, descriptions, case studies, theories, research, criminal justice policies, and enforcement approaches related to organized crime in this country. This book will help students understand the complex nature of this phenomenon and its varied treatment by the academic literature, popular culture, and government enforcement policies and programs. This includes dispelling the many enduring myths, sensationalized portrayals, and chronic misinformation that have engulfed this topic for so many years. A central theme of this book is that organized crime in Canada has resulted, in part, from historical developments, dominant institutions, government policies, as well as social conditions, norms, values, and vices that are indigenous to this country. Despite the many harms that organized crime has inflicted on Canadian society, Canadians have a symbiotic relationship with criminal syndicates and underground markets by readily consuming illegal and contraband goods and services to satisfy their many vices. Ostensibly, this book strives to determine whether there is a Canadian version of organized crime that is reflective of this country and distinguishes it from other countries."--

Book excerpt: This unique and timely collection brings together 24 of the very best and most controversial readings on the history of crime, deviance and criminal justice in Canada. Divided into five sections, the first part of Crime and Deviance examines developing issues in crime and punishment while the second part introduces key aspects of a 'working criminal justice system'. Policing ethnicity is the focus of section three, which includes articles on the relocation phenomenon and the Africville study as well as Ontario Aboriginal women confronting the criminal justice system, 1920-1960. Similarly, regulating gender and sexuality, section four, examines moral reform in English Canada, 1885-1925; and anti-homosexual campaigns in the Canadian Civil Service in the mid-20th century. The final section profiles the moral regulation of behaviour. Articles in this section include non-medical opiate use and control policies in Canada, 1870-1970; as well as moral fervour and the evolution of Canada's prostitution laws, 1867-1917. Power relations is a very strong unifying theme that is, relations of gender, social class, ethnicity and age. regulation of sexuality, we can trace these relations of power and how they link to the definition of crime in society. Canada's top criminologists and social critics are included in this special collection. This impressive list includes Russell Smandych, Rick Linden, Constance Backhouse, Helen Boritch, John Hagan, Carolyn Strange, Tina Loo, Joan Sangster, Mariana Valverde, Kelly Hannah-Moffat, Gary Kinsman and Robert Menzies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1791 when the Constitutional Act created a legislative assembly for Upper Canada, the colonists and their British rulers decreed that the operating criminal justice system in the area be adopted from England, to avoid any undue influence from the nearby United States. In this new study of early Canadian law, David Murray has delved into the court records of the Niagara District, one of the richest sets of criminal court records surviving from Upper Canada, to analyze the criminal justice system in the district during the first half of the nineteenth century. Murray explores how far local characteristics affected the operation of a criminal justice system transplanted from England; his analysis includes how legal processes affected Upper Canadian morality, the treatment of the insane, welfare cases, crimes committed in the district, and an examination of the roles of the Niagara magistrates, constables, and juries. Murray concludes by arguing that while the principles and culture of British justice were firmly implanted in the Niagara district, this did not prevent justice from being unequal, especially for women and visible minorities. Integrating the stories of the individuals caught up in the legal system, Murray explores law from a local perspective, and illuminates how the Niagara region's criminal justice system operated under hybrid influences from both Britain and the United States.
