Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ignatian tradition sprang up in the sixteenth century, the fruit of graces bestowed on a Basque nobleman, Ignatius of Loyola. Guided by a passion to find God in all things, Ignatius and his first companions founded the Society of Jesus and inspired many other religious orders and lay movements. Their influence spread across the globe even as they embraced various aspects of the cultures, languages, and institutions they encountered. This introduction is a mere sampling of the men and women influenced by Ignatius 'draws on the stories and writings of nineteen exemplary individuals as well as the corporate voice of the Jesuit order. Here we meet missionaries, scholars, artists, advocates, and martyrs. Contemplatives in action, they follow Christ by serving others. They embody the freedom born of a passionate knowledge of God's unending, unconditional love; precisely in this, they show us how to live well today. Eileen Burke-Sullivan, PhD, is a theologian, spiritual director, liturgist, and musician. She currently teaches at Creighton University where she also directs the Master of Arts in Ministry program. A well-known lecturer, she has served as a lay ecclesial minister in both parish and diocesan settings, and as a national and international leader in the Ignatian-inspired Christian Life Community movement. Kevin F. Burke, SJ, is a theologian, poet, and younger brother of Dr. Burke-Sullivan. He currently serves as the acting president and academic dean of the Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley. He recently edited Pedro Arrupe: Essential Writings and coedited (with Robert Lassalle-Klein) Love that Produces Hope, a collection of essays on the thought of the Jesuit theologian and martyr, Ignacio Ellacuraa.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new volume in the Encyclopaedia of Sports Medicine series, published under the auspices of the International Olympic Committee, provides a state-of-the- art account of the epidemiology of injury across a broad spectrum of Olympic sports. The book uses the public health model in describing the scope of the injury problem, the associated risk factors, and in evaluating the current research on injury prevention strategies described in the literature. Epidemiology of Injury in Olympic Sports comprehensively covers what is known about the distribution and determinants of injury and injury rates in each sport. The editors and contributors have taken an evidence-based approach and adopted a uniform methodology to assess the data available. Each chapter is illustrated with tables which make it easy to examine injury factors between studies within a sport and between sports. With contributions from internationally renowned experts, this is an invaluable reference book for medical doctors, physical therapists and athletic trainers who serve athletes and sports teams, and for sports medicine scientists and healthcare professionals who are interested in the epidemiological study of injury in sports.

Book excerpt: When the landmark Supreme Court case of Brown vs. Board of Education was handed down in 1954, many civil rights advocates believed that the decision, which declared public school segregation unconstitutional, would become the Holy Grail of racial justice. Fifty years later, despite its legal irrelevance and the racially separate and educationally ineffective state of public schooling for most black children, Brown is still viewed by many as the perfect precedent. Here, Derrick Bell shatters the shining image of this celebrated ruling. He notes that, despite the onerous burdens of segregation, many black schools functioned well and racial bigotry had not rendered blacks a damaged race. He maintains that, given what we now know about the pervasive nature of racism, the Court should have determined instead to rigorously enforce the "equal" component of the "separate but equal" standard. Racial policy, Bell maintains, is made through silent covenants--unspoken convergences of interest and involuntary sacrifices of rights--that ensure that policies conform to priorities set by policy-makers. Blacks and whites are the fortuitous winners or losers in these unspoken agreements. The experience with Brown, Bell urges, should teach us that meaningful progress in the quest for racial justice requires more than the assertion of harms. Strategies must recognize and utilize the interest-convergence factors that strongly influence racial policy decisions. In Silent Covenants, Bell condenses more than four decades of thought and action into a powerful and eye-opening book.

Book excerpt: CANCER: with often abrupt and unwelcome entry into human lives as well as profound multi-dimensional impact, such an illness is, for many, considered to be a ruthless thief, intent on stealing not only joy, but life itself. Of course, even as cancer attempts to steal life and captivate those under its hold, lest we forget that as powerful an adversary as it may seem, it is no contestant against the power of the One who ¿has come to set the captives free¿ (Luke 4:18) and who is Life itself (John 14:6) and its Source.Cross of a Different Kind: Cancer & Christian Spirituality draws upon the richness of Christian spiritual theology with the aim of rejuvenating hope within and imparting eternal Truth to all persons who have in any ways been ¿touched¿ by cancer in any of its wicked forms. Divided into three parts which addresses those who have lost loved ones to cancer; those currently confronting their diagnoses; and survivors, this book serves as both a ¿spiritual field-guide¿ as well as an informative, yet practical helpmate to ensure all facing such adversities that they are never alone in their journey.
