Book excerpt: This paper summarizes a cooperative research program between the USDA Forest Service, Forest Products Laboratory (FPL), in Madison, Wisconsin, and Forintek Canada Corp. in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. This research program provided detailed creep--rupture and some creep information for composite panel products. Commercially produced plywood, oriented strandboard (OSB), and minimally aligned waferboard were tested to identify nine mills (three for each product) that produced panels with a range of flexural creep performance. The three plywood, three OSB, and three waferboard products (nine products total, one from each mill) were then tested to provide information on their duration of load (DOL) and creep performance. Large panel specimens were subjected to both rampload and constant-load tests under one environmental condition. The constant-load results provided conventional or deterministic DOL factors that compared favorably with National Design Specifications recommended for adjusting lumber design strength properties under dry service conditions. Ramp-load specimen data generally indicated a lower rate of damage accumulation than did data for constant-load specimens. Creep tests at two low constant-load levels were also performed on large specimens under three environmental conditions for a 6-month period. Those results suggested that present deterministic creep factors in panel design practice might be acceptable for plywood under the influence of relatively severe conditions, for OSB in moderate conditions, and for waferboard in dry service environmental conditions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Damage in wood is principally the result of fatigue. Fatigue is the process of progressive localised irreversible change in a material, and may culminate in cracks or complete fracture if conditions that initiated or propagated the process persist. Comprehensive understanding of fatigue and fracture in engineered wood components must be founded on a proper understanding of the damage processes. Although wood is the world's most widely used structural material, whether measured by volume consumed or value of finished construction, its behaviour is not well understood even by people who have spent their careers studying it. * What is known about failure processes comes almost entirely from empirical evidence collected for engineering purposes. * Hypotheses about behaviour of wood are based on macroscopic observation of specimens during and following tests. * With only limited resources and the need to obtain practical results quickly, the timber engineering research community has steered away from the scientific approach. * Forestry practices are changing and are known to influence characteristics of wood cells therefore there is a need to periodically reassess the mechanical properties of visually graded lumber the blackbox approach. Fatigue and Fracture of Wood examines the above issues from a scientific point of view by drawing on the authors' own research as well as previously published material. Unlike the empirical research, the book begins by examining growth of wood. It briefly examines its structure in relation to how trees grow, before assessing the fatigue and fracture of wood and discussing the scientific methods of modelling fatigue. * Covers from macro to micro behaviour of wood * Presents direct evidence of how wood fractures using Scanning Electron Microscopy * The first book to present a physically correct model for fracture in wood * Provides experimental proof of so-called memory in wood (i.e. dependence of fatigue behaviour on the loading sequence) * Givse practical illustrations of how theories and models can be applied in practice An essential resource for wood scientists/engineers, timber-engineering practitioners, and graduate students studying wood and solid mechanics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the important characteristics affecting many materials including wood, plastic, and wood-plastic composites is their time-dependent behavior. This behavior can be divided into two separate, yet related, phenomena known as creep and creep-rupture. Creep is the increase in deformation over time while subjected to a sustained load. Creep-rupture, or load-duration behavior, is the eventual failure to sustain a constant load due to increased deformation over time. Both have a considerable effect on wood-plastic composite members and must be accounted for in design. The load-duration, or creeprupture, behavior of wood and traditional wood composite products has been studied extensively by numerous researchers, and simplified design procedures to account for both effects are in place. However, the load-duration behavior of composite products made out of the combination of wood and plastic is not well understood or documented. Currently, wood-plastic composite products are available on the commercial market, yet no standardized design procedures to account for creep or duration-of-load effects exist. Given the lack of understanding of the load-duration behavior of wood-plastic composites, a research effort was initiated to investigate the load-duration behavior of various wood-plastic composite formulations and to compare the observed behavior to that of solid sawn lumber. An exponential damage rate model commonly used for solid wood was found to similarly describe the load-duration effect for wood-plastic composites. Proposed adjustment factors were developed following existing procedures for wood products. It was also found that the current adjustment factors, as found in the 1997 edition of the National Design Specification for Wood Construction, can be conservatively applied to wood-plastic composite products, although the adjustment is overly conservative for the materials tested. However, applying adjustment factors based on a short-duration loading was found to be non-conservative. Rate-of-load effects on flexural properties were also experimentally investigated. It was found that a rate-of-load effect existed for both modulus of rupture and modulus of elasticity over certain ranges of load-rate values. A rate-of-loading corresponding to 0.01 mm/mm/min was found to produce representative material properties that were slightly conservative

Technologies capable of converting stained lumber into market acceptable products are urgently required to reduce the impact of the growing volume of MPB killed lumber on the profitability of forestry in BC. New, thick MPB strand-based structural composite products can be produced and help absorb a large volume of MPB wood. With appropriate mechanical properties, such products can be used as beams, headers, and columns in the low-rise commercial, multi-family residential and single family residential markets. This work was focused on the duration-load and creep behaviour of thick MPB strand-based wood composite. The beam specimens were made in the Timber Engineering and Applied Mechanics Laboratory at UBC. A series of tests were conducted on the matched groups to investigate the creep-rupture behaviour. These investigations comprised of ramp load tests at three loading rates, long-term constant load tests at two stress levels and cyclic bending tests at six stress levels. A damage accumulation model was developed to study the creep-rupture behaviour. This model stipulates that the rate of damage growth is given in terms of the current strain rate and the previously accumulated damage, and a 5-parameter rheological model is applied to describe the viscoelastic constitutive relationship to represent the time-dependent strain, while the damage accumulation law acts as the failure criterion. The results of the long-term constant load tests were then interpreted by means of the creep-rupture model which had been shown to be able to represent the time-dependent deflection and time-to-failure data for different stress levels. The predictions of the model were verified using results from ramp load tests at different loading rates and results from cyclic loading tests at different stress levels. The creep-rupture model incorporates the short term s.
